Russian Air Force: history of development and current composition. Air Force Day: date

The two most powerful powers in the world have the most powerful air fleets. These are Russia and the United States of America. Both countries are constantly improving them. New military personnel are released, if not annually, then every two to three years. Huge funds are allocated for development in this area.

If speak about strategic aviation Russia, then do not expect that you will be able to find accurate statistical data anywhere on the number of attack aircraft, fighters, etc. in service. Such information is considered top secret. Therefore, the information provided in this article may be subjective.

General overview of the Russian air fleet

It is included in the Aerospace Forces of our country. One of the important components of the WWF is aviation. It is divided for long-range, transport, operational-tactical and army. This includes attack aircraft, bombers, fighters, and transport aircraft.

How many military aircraft does Russia have? Approximate figure - 1614 units of military air equipment. These include 80 strategic bombers, 150 long-range bombers, 241 attack aircraft, etc.

For comparison, you can give how many passenger planes there are in Russia. Total 753. Of them 547 - main and 206 — regional. Since 2014, the demand for passenger flights began to fall, so the number of aircraft in use has also decreased. 72% of them- these are foreign models ( and ).

New aircraft in the Russian Air Force are improved models military equipment. Among them we can highlight Su-57. This 5th generation fighter with a wide range of functions. Until August 2017, it was developed under a different name - Tu-50. They began to create it as a replacement for the Su-27.

The first time he soared into the sky was still in 2010 year. Three years later it was put into small-scale production for testing. By 2018 Multi-batch deliveries will begin.

Another promising model is MiG-35. This is a light fighter whose characteristics are almost comparable with fifth generation aircraft. It was designed to deliver precise strikes against targets on land and water. Winter 2017 the first tests began. By 2020 The first deliveries are planned.

A-100 “Premier”- another new product from the Russian Air Force. Long-range radio navigation aircraft. It must replace outdated models - A50 and A50U.

From training machines you can bring Yak-152. It was developed for the selection of pilots at the first stage of training.

Among military transport models there are Il-112 and Il-214. The first of them is a light aircraft that should replace the An-26. The second was developed jointly with, but now they continue to design it, as a replacement for An-12.

Among helicopters, such new models are under development - Ka-60 and Mi-38. The Ka-60 is a transport helicopter. It is designed to deliver ammunition and weapons to military conflict zones. Mi-38 is a multifunctional helicopter. It is financed directly by the state.

There is also a new item among passenger models. This is IL-114. Turboprop aircraft with two engines. It holds 64 passengers, but flies at a distance - up to 1500 km. It is being developed to replace An-24.

If we talk about Russian small aviation, the situation here is extremely deplorable. There are only 2-4 thousand planes and helicopters. And the number of amateur pilots is decreasing every year. This is due to the fact that for any aircraft you have to pay two taxes at once - transport and property.

Air fleets of Russia and the USA - comparative analysis

The total number of aircraft the US has is: that's 13,513 cars. Researchers note that of these - only 2000- fighters and bombers. The rest - 11,000- These are transport vehicles and those used by NATO, the US Navy and the National Guard.

Transport aircraft are extremely important to keep air bases operational and provide excellent logistics to America's troops. In this comparison, the US Air Force and the Russian Air Force clearly win the former.

The US Air Force has big amount technology.

In terms of the pace of renewal of military air equipment, Russia is taking the lead. By 2020, it is planned to produce another 600 units. The real power gap between the two powers will be 10-15 % . It has already been noted that Russian S-27s are ahead of American F-25s.

If we talk about comparison armed forces Russia and the United States, the former’s trump card is the presence of particularly powerful air defense systems. They reliably protect Russian air latitudes. Modern Russian complexes The S-400 air defense system has no analogues anywhere in the world.

Russian air defense is something like an “umbrella” protecting the skies of our country until 2020. By this milestone, it is planned to completely update almost all military equipment, including air equipment.

The Air Force includes the following types of troops:

Aviation (types of aviation - bomber, attack, fighter aircraft air defense, reconnaissance, transport and special),
- anti-aircraft rocket troops,
- radio technical troops,
- special troops,
- units and institutions of the rear.

Bomber aircraft has long-range (strategic) and front-line (tactical) bombers in service various types. It is designed to defeat troop groups, destroy important military, energy facilities and communications centers primarily in the strategic and operational depths of enemy defenses. The bomber can carry bombs of various calibers, both conventional and nuclear, as well as air-to-surface guided missiles.

Attack aircraft intended for air support of troops, destruction of manpower and objects mainly on cutting edge, in the tactical and immediate operational depth of the enemy, as well as in combating aircraft enemy in the air.

One of the main requirements for an attack aircraft is high accuracy in hitting ground targets. Weapons: large-caliber guns, bombs, rockets.

Fighter aircraft air defense is the main maneuverable force of the air defense system and is designed to cover the most important directions and objects from enemy air attack. It is capable of destroying the enemy at maximum ranges from defended objects.

The air defense aviation is armed with air defense fighter aircraft, combat helicopters, special and transport aircraft and helicopters.

Reconnaissance aircraft designed for conducting aerial reconnaissance of the enemy, terrain and weather, and can destroy hidden enemy objects.

Reconnaissance flights can also be carried out by bomber, fighter-bomber, attack and fighter aircraft. For this purpose, they are specially equipped with day and night photography equipment at various scales, high-resolution radio and radar stations, heat direction finders, sound recording and television equipment, and magnetometers.

Reconnaissance aviation is divided into tactical, operational and strategic reconnaissance aviation.

Transport aviation designed for the transportation of troops, military equipment, weapons, ammunition, fuel, food, airborne landings, evacuation of the wounded, sick, etc.

Special aviation designed for long-range radar detection and guidance, refueling aircraft in the air, electronic warfare, radiation, chemical and biological protection, control and communications, meteorological and technical support, rescuing crews in distress, evacuating the wounded and sick.

Anti-aircraft missile forces designed to protect the country's most important facilities and troop groups from enemy air strikes.

They constitute the main firepower of the air defense system and are armed with anti-aircraft guns. missile systems and anti-aircraft missile systems for various purposes, possessing great firepower and high accuracy in destroying enemy air attack weapons.

Radio technical troops- the main source of information about the air enemy and are intended for conducting radar reconnaissance, monitoring the flights of their aircraft and compliance by aircraft of all departments with the rules for the use of airspace.

They provide information about the beginning of an air attack, combat information for anti-aircraft missile forces and air defense aviation, as well as information for controlling formations, units and air defense units.

The radio technical troops are armed with radar stations and radar systems capable of detecting not only airborne but also surface targets at any time of the year and day, regardless of meteorological conditions and interference.

Communication units and subdivisions designed for deployment and operation of communication systems in order to ensure command and control of troops in all types of combat activities.

Electronic warfare units and units designed to interfere with airborne radars, bomb sights, communications and radio navigation of enemy air attack systems.

Units and subdivisions of communications and radio engineering support are designed to provide control of aviation units and subunits, aircraft navigation, takeoff and landing of aircraft and helicopters.

Units and subdivisions engineering troops, as well as parts and units of radiation, chemical and biological protection are designed to perform the most complex tasks of engineering and chemical support, respectively.

Air Force Day can rightfully be considered a holiday that promotes the development of military traditions in Russia and increases the importance of military service.

Facts from history

The history of the emergence of the Air Force in Russia began in 1910 thanks to the appearance in the country of the first air fleet, whose purpose was to conduct military intelligence. On August 12, 1912, an order from the Military Department was issued, according to which an aeronautical unit was created in Russia.

This air fleet existed for seven years and rose to become the best in the world. He played a fundamental role in shaping world aviation. With the advent of the revolution in 1917, the imperial air fleet ceased to exist.

In 1918, the Soviet government created its own military aviation, which took part in civil war. After its completion, the air force was forgotten in the country until the early thirties.

With the onset of the thirties, the authorities began to pay close attention to military aviation. Aviation factories began to be built in the country, and schools were opened to train flight personnel.

The purpose of the air fleet was expanded, and military aviation began to develop rapidly.

During the Great Patriotic War, the production of military aircraft in the Soviet Union sharply increased, and new technologies began to be introduced.

Facts about the date of celebration

There is reliable information that Air Force Day was not always celebrated in Russia on August 12. At the beginning of the 20th century, during the formation of aviation, pilots celebrated their day on August 2. Then in 1924, according to Frunze’s decision, the holiday air force began to be celebrated on July 14th.

Stalin in 1933 moved the date of celebration to August 18. At the same time, Air Force Day was recognized as a public holiday. This was influenced by the successful development of the aviation industry in the country.

Since 1980, the date on which Air Force Day is celebrated has changed periodically.

In 2006, taking into account historical facts, the President of Russia signed a decree, thanks to which the military air force Our country began to celebrate its day on August 12. This day, in compliance with all formalities, became the professional day of military pilots Russian Federation.

Great Patriotic War (role of the Air Force)

During the war, the Germans used rush war tactics, expecting a quick surrender Soviet troops. One of the main points of their plan was the destruction of airfields serving as locations for military vehicles. The Germans, thanks to information received by intelligence, were aware of their location.

Having received an order from the center, the command of certain military districts was unable to redeploy the aircraft to alternate airfields within the prescribed period. They were not properly prepared, so in the first days of the war the Nazis exterminated a large number of our planes. This fact allowed them to dominate the air for some time.

Soviet pilots, showing heroism, resisted German aces, flying on planes superior to ours technical specifications combat vehicles. The heroic deeds performed by the pilots instilled fear in the Nazis. With their actions, they laid the foundations of the Russian Air Force traditions, filled with courage, resilience and a sense of duty.

By the end of this bloody war, the superiority of the Air Force Soviet Union has become an indisputable fact.

Cold War period

After the victory of the Soviet Union over fascism, the Air Force troops were subjected to serious modernization. Active work was carried out on the development new technology, air combat tactics were honed. By the end of the 1980s, the military aviation of the Soviet Union became the most powerful in the world.

The USSR Air Force in those years was divided into the following types:

  • Frontline.
  • Far.
  • Military transport.
  • Auxiliary.

It also included special forces and rear services. But the economic crisis and the collapse of the country led to the fact that the Air Force began to divide the newly formed CIS republics among themselves.

At the end of the section, Russia became the only state on the territory of the former Soviet Union with long-range aviation.

The current situation of the Russian Air Force

The authority of Russian military aviation today in the conditions of any military conflict situation, cannot be underestimated. Few people can express their opinion that Russian aviation is not capable of solving combat missions under any circumstances.

This revaluation of the essence of things became possible thanks to the work of the developers of the latest combat aircraft; technical personnel servicing combat vehicles at home bases, and directly to highly qualified flight personnel.

Nowadays, the air force of the Russian Federation is actively undergoing rearmament and modernization. They carry out a huge range of work to ensure the security of our country’s borders and patrol certain areas of the planet in the interests of Russia.

Even on their holiday (August 12 - Russian Air Force Day), a large number of military pilots are at their combat posts, protecting the tranquility of their native country.

Tasks of the Russian Air Force

Nowadays, the Russian Air Force is entrusted with many important tasks:

  • Intelligence operations.
  • Transportation material assets and resource potential.
  • Landing and assistance to ground units.
  • Protecting the country from air strikes.
  • If necessary, strikes against enemy groups and military-economic territories.

The Air Force of the Russian Federation plays one of the main roles in protecting Russian territory from the threat of enemy attack. They are able to repel any blow and are a deterrent to the plans of any ill-wisher.

Holiday traditions

Every year, when Air Force Day comes, events are held at the locations of military air bases. exciting excursions, military aircraft demonstrations and other events.

In certain cities of our country, on the day when the military aviation of the Russian Federation celebrates its holiday, spectacular flight shows are held. Those present can admire the most complex tricks and appreciate high level professionalism of flying aces.

On Russian Air Force Day (the date of the holiday has remained unchanged since 2006), various films about the air force are also shown, and exciting sporting events are held. Flowers and wreaths are brought to the graves of military pilots who gave their lives for their Motherland, because the memory of the exploits they accomplished lives forever in the souls of the Russian people.

Aviation museums also open their doors on the holiday, everyone can visit them for free, and various sporting events take place.

On August 12, everyone without exception wishes the representatives of the Russian military aviation, who are the guarantors of the peace of the Russian people, all the best.

The creation of this article was provoked by regular disputes and measurements of various “organs” in topics about our aviation. In general, the audience for these discussions can be divided into those who believe that we are hopelessly behind, and those who, on the contrary, are subject to unprecedented enthusiasm and firmly believe that everything is wonderful. The argument basically boils down to the fact that “nothing flies with us, but everything is cool with them.” And vice versa. I decided to highlight several theses around which frequent debates flare up, and give them my assessment.

For those who value their time, I give conclusions at the very beginning:

1) The US Air Force and the Russian Air Force are approximately equal in both quantitative and qualitative terms, with the US having a slight advantage;

2) The trend for the next 5-7 years is to achieve almost complete parity;

3) PR, advertising and psychological warfare - favorite and effective method conduct of US military operations. An enemy who is psychologically defeated (by lack of faith in the power of his weapon, hands, etc.) is already half defeated.

So, let's begin.

The US Air Force/Navy/Guard is the most powerful in the world.

Yes this is true. The strength of the US Air Force as of May 2013 was 934 fighters, 96 bombers, 138 attack aircraft, 329 transport aircraft, 216 tankers, 938 training aircraft and 921 other aircraft.

For comparison, the strength of the Russian Air Force as of May 2013 was 738 fighters, 163 bombers, 153 attack aircraft, 372 transport aircraft, 18 tankers, 200 training equipment and 500 other aircraft. As you can see, there is no “monstrous” quantitative superiority.

However, there are nuances, the main one of which is that US aviation is aging, and there is no replacement for it.

I also want to highlight the following point. Our country 20 years ago entered into “democracy” with the Su-27 and MiG-29, which, thanks to a competent export policy, were able to survive and then increase their potential to the Su-35S and MiG-35. The United States entered a crisis with the F-22, out of production, and with the unfinished F-35, as well as a massive fleet of good, but already outdated F-15/16. I lead my rhetoric to the fact that this moment The United States does not have a relatively cheap reserve that would allow it to maintain a quantitative (and in some ways qualitative) superiority over the Russian Federation without multibillion-dollar investments in new developments.

At the same time, the Russian aviation fleet will be actively modernized over the next 5-7 years. Including through the creation of completely new aircraft. At the moment, until 2017, contracts have been concluded for the production/modernization of MiG-31BM - 100 units; Su-27SM - 96 units; Su-27SM3 – 12 units; Su-35S – 95 units; Su-30SM – 60 units; Su-30M2 – 4 units; MiG-29SMT – 34 units; MiG-29K – 24 units; Su-34 – 124 units; MiG-35 – 24 units; PAK FA – 60 units; IL-476 – 100 units; An-124-100M – 42 units; A-50U – 20 units; Tu-95MSM – 20 units; Yak-130 – 65 units. By 2020, more than 750 new machines will be put into operation.

To be fair, I note that in 2001 the United States planned to purchase more than 2,400 F-35s by 2020. However, at the moment, all deadlines have been missed, and the entry into service of the aircraft has been postponed until mid-2015.

We have only a few 4++ aircraft and no 5th generation, but the USA already has hundreds of them.

Yes, that's right, the United States has 141 F-22As in service. We have 18 Su-35S. PAK FA - undergoing flight tests. But you need to consider:

a) F-22 aircraft have been discontinued due to 1) high cost ($280-300 units versus 85-95 for the Su-35); 2) they overlooked the issue of the tail unit (it fell apart when overloaded); 3) glitches with the fire control system (fire control system).

b) The F-35, with all its PR, is very far from the 5th generation. And there are plenty of shortcomings: either the EMDS will fail, or the airframe will not work as it should, or the control system will malfunction.

c) Until 2017, the troops will receive: Su-35S - 95 units, PAK FA - 60 units.

d) Comparison of individual aircraft without their context combat use, – not correct. Fighting– this is a high-intensity and multimodal mutual destruction, where much depends on the specific topography, weather conditions, luck, training, coherence, morale, etc. Separate combat units they don't solve anything. On paper, any ordinary ATGM modern tank will tear, but in battle conditions everything is much more prosaic.

Their 5th generation is many times superior to our PAK FA and Su-35S.

This is a very bold statement.

a) If the F-22 and F-35 are so cool, why are they: 1) So carefully hidden? 2) Why don’t they allow EPR measurements to be taken? 3) Why aren’t there demonstration dogfights or at least simple comparative maneuvering, like at air shows?

b) If we compare the performance characteristics of ours and American cars, then we can detect a lag in our aircraft only in terms of ESR (for the Su-35S) and detection range (20-30 km). 20-30 km in range is bullshit for the simple reason that the missiles that we have exceed the US AIM-54, AIM-152AAAM in range by 80-120 km. I'm talking about RVV BD, KS-172, R-37. So, if the F-35 or F-22 radars have better range for unobtrusive targets, then how will they shoot down this target? And where is the guarantee that the “contact” will not fly “low”?

c) There is nothing universal in military affairs. An attempt to create a universal aircraft capable of performing the functions of an interceptor, bomber, fighter and attack aircraft leads to the fact that universal becomes synonymous with the word mediocre. War only recognizes best samples in its class, tailored to solve specific problems. Therefore, if it’s an attack aircraft, then it’s a Su-25SM; if it’s a front-line bomber, it’s a Su-34; if it’s an interceptor, it’s a MiG-31BM; if it’s a fighter, it’s a Su-35S.

d) “America spent $400 billion in R&D to create the F-35, and $70 billion for the F-22. Russia spent only $8 billion to create the T-50. Doesn’t anyone realize that if Russia would spend $400 billion on a research project, they would probably produce an aircraft capable of conquering the world in a second…” (c) War is not a comparison of who has X longer. What is more important is who will have the best X in terms of price/quality ratio.

The United States has significant superiority in strategic aviation forces.

This is wrong. IN combat strength The US Air Force operates 96 strategic bombers: 44 B-52H, 36 B-1B and 16 B-2A. The B-2 is exclusively subsonic and carries only free-falling bombs from nuclear weapons. B-52N – subsonic and old, like a mammoth. B-1B is currently not a carrier of nuclear weapons (START-3). Compared to the B-1, the Tu-160 has a 1.5 times greater take-off weight, 1.3 times greater combat radius, 1.6 times greater speed and a greater load in the internal compartments. By 2025 we plan to commission a new strategic bomber(PAK DA), which will replace the Tu-95 and Tu-160. The United States has extended the service life of its aircraft until 2035.

If you compare their ALCMs (cruise missiles) with ours, then everything turns out quite interesting. AGM-86 ALCM has a range of 1200-1400 km. Our X-55 is 3000-3500 km, and X-101 is 5000-5500 km. That is, the Tu-160 can shoot at enemy territory or AUG without entering the affected area, and then calmly escape at supersonic speed (for comparison, the maximum operating time at full thrust with afterburner for the F/A-18 is 10 minutes , the 160th has 45 minutes). It also raises deep doubts about their ability to overcome a normal (non-Arab-Yugoslav) air defense system.

To summarize, I would like to note once again that modern air war– these are not individual battles in the air, but the work of detection, target designation and suppression systems. And look at the plane (be it F-22 or PAK FA ) like a proud, lonely “wolf” in the sky – no need. There are a lot of all sorts of nuances around in the form of air defense, electronic warfare, ground-based RiRTR, weather conditions, flares, LTC and other joys that will not allow the pilot to even reach the target. Therefore, there is no need to compose sagas and sing hymns to single fantastic winged ships that will bring laurels of victory to the feet of those who created them and destroy everyone who dares to “raise a hand” against their creators.

— explanation of new material : § 35, pp. 178-181.

Air Force- a type of armed forces designed to protect higher state and military authorities, strategic nuclear forces, troop groups, important administrative and industrial centers and regions of the country from reconnaissance and air strikes, to gain air superiority, fire and nuclear destruction enemy from the air, increasing mobility and supporting the actions of formations of the armed forces, conducting comprehensive reconnaissance and performing special tasks.

During the reform of the RF Armed Forces, two types of armed forces were merged - the Air Force and Air Defense. The essence of this integration of the Air Defense Forces and the Air Force was not a mechanical connection, but to give the combined form better parameters and a dynamic character. The combat readiness of the Air Defense Forces did not suffer from such a unification. Anti-aircraft, missile, radio technical troops, fighter aircraft, and air defense support units have been preserved. At the same time, the bulk of regiments, brigades, and air defense divisions have been preserved and strengthened. Specific gravity Air defense in its combined form is about 60%. The air defense system remains a reliable shield, capable, as before, of providing air cover for particularly important government, military administrative and industrial facilities. Central command post The Air Force became the Air Defense Central Command Center, because it turned out to be more suitable for solving a set of tasks assigned to the united species. Thus, the Air Force Central Control Center now also controls the air defense forces of the Commonwealth countries (Belarus and Kazakhstan). The Air Force Control Center allows you to control the territory and state border of almost everything former USSR, with the exception of the Baltic states.

A type of modern military aviation and air defense forces.

The Russian Air Force consists from associations, connections and military units and include types of aviation: long-range, military transport, front-line (it includes bomber, attack, fighter, reconnaissance aviation), army, as well as types of anti-aircraft forces: anti-aircraft missile forces, radio engineering troops.

Long-range aviation – the main strike force of the Air Force, capable of effectively hitting important targets of aviation groups and carrier ships cruise missiles sea-based, energy facilities and higher military and government controlled, nodes of railway, road and sea communications.

Military transport aviation- the main means of landing troops and military equipment in the interests of operations in continental and ocean theaters of war, it is the most mobile means of delivery to specified areas material resources, military equipment, food, units and units different types Armed Forces and branches of the military.

Front-line bomber and attack aircraft - designed primarily for air support of the Ground Forces in all types of military operations (defense, offensive, counter-offensive). Front-line reconnaissance aviation is intended to conduct aerial reconnaissance in the interests of all types of armed forces and branches of the military. Front-line fighter aviation is designed to destroy enemy air attack weapons while solving problems of covering armed forces groups, economic regions, administrative and political centers, military and other objects.

Army Aviation – designed for fire support of the Ground Forces. It is also entrusted with combat and logistics support tasks. During the battle, army aviation strikes at enemy troops, destroys his airborne assault forces, raiding, advanced and outflanking detachments; provides landing and air support for its landing forces, fights enemy helicopters, destroys its nuclear missiles, tanks and other armored vehicles.

Anti-aircraft missile forces - designed to cover troops and facilities from enemy air attacks.

Radio technical troops - designed to detect enemy air attack weapons in the air, identify them, accompany them, and notify command, troops and agencies about them civil defense, to monitor the flights of its aircraft.

Armament and Air Force military equipment

The basis of fighter aircraft is the MiG-29, MiG-31 and Su-27. Their modernization provides for an increase in combat effectiveness through the use of new on-board equipment.

For development purposes strike aviation are being developed prototypes Su's new car. As soon as they are ready, they will be put into production. There are new modifications of the Su-25 attack aircraft.

Reducing the number of personnel and the number of personnel operated aviation weapons and equipment will be compensated by the quality parameters of new and modernized models. The new Il-76MF aircraft has passed flight tests. The An-124 Ruslan aircraft has a great future, as does its modified version, the An-124-100. There are no analogues of this machine in the world and none are expected in the near future.

Conclusions:

  1. The Air Force consists of long-range and military transport aviation, front-line bomber and attack aviation, front-line reconnaissance aviation, front-line fighter aviation, army aviation and radio technical troops.
  2. The Air Force is designed for air strikes against enemy groups, in their rear and transport.
  3. The Air Force is leading aerial reconnaissance and organize air transportation.
  4. Military transport aviation of the Air Force is capable of landing and airborne troops, transporting troops and military equipment over long distances.

III. Fixing the material:

— Name the types of the RF Armed Forces.

— What is the purpose of the Air Force?

— Name the types of modern military aviation.
