Among the diagnostic tests of anthropometric methods, dermatoglyphics (from the Greek derma - skin, glipho - engrave) occupies a significant place.

Dermatoglyphics is a branch of morphology that studies papillary lines and patterns and allows, based on the imprints of patterns of palms, fingers, and feet, to diagnose some hereditary diseases. In order to decide on the criteria for abnormalities of dermatoglyphic patterns, it is necessary to know their characteristics in healthy people. Currently, dermatoglyphic studies involve a number of statistical methods of analysis that make it possible to reliably assess the nature of inheritance of the ridge count (the number of lines in the pattern on individual fingers), papillary patterns and other characteristics. The prospects for the widespread use of this technique are significant, since this method makes it possible to diagnose a number of pathologies at the early stages of ontogenesis and determine their nature. Dermatoglyphics is widely used in counseling practice.

Skin patterns on the fingers and palms are formed starting from the third month of intrauterine life. By the end of the fourth month, their formation is completed completely, and throughout later life(pre- and postnatal) patterns remain unchanged. Thus, the features of the patterns are polygenic traits and are inherited from parents, and as hereditary factors, they are susceptible to mutations as a result of the action of mutagens (in the first four months of life). Skin lines, or “ridges,” are formed in connection with the openings of the sweat glands located at their tops, which depend on the development of nerve endings and are determined by many genes, probably located on different chromosomes Nazirov, 1975).

The earliest reports on dermatoglyphics date back to the 18th century. As a scientific discipline, dermatoglyphics developed towards the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. This method was first used in genetics in 1939, when N. Cummins described the characteristic features of dermatoglyphs in Down syndrome. Dermatoglyphics, in addition to criminology and forensic medicine, is widely used in anthropology, genetics and medicine.

Dermatoglyphics is divided into fingerprinting- study of finger patterns, palmoscopy- study of the features of palm patterns and plantoscopy- features of patterns on the feet.

Fingerprinting. Among the patterns marked on the fingers, three types are distinguished. Galton described them as a curl (W - whorl), a loop (L - loop) and an arc (A - arch). Later, the classification was detailed and currently distinguishes arches, loops (ulnar and radial), true curls and complex patterns.

The arc is the rarest finger pattern. The arches can be simple - flat or high - tent-shaped. The specificity of this pattern is the absence of a triradius. The pattern consists of non-intersecting ridges and runs across the entire finger pad.

Loop - is a semi-closed pattern: one end is rounded (closed), the other is open. It turns out that the skin ridges, starting from one edge of the finger, go to the other, but before reaching it, they return to the edge from which they started. If the open end faces the radial side, then the loops are designated as radial - L r, if in the ulnar direction - L u. Each loop has one triradius(delta).

A whorl is a concentric pattern in which the papillary lines are arranged concentrically around the core of the pattern. The curls have two deltas (triradii).

Complex, or composite, patterns have two triradii or more. Such patterns are often made up of two loops, open in different directions. It is better to analyze such patterns separately (for the individual). During group examinations, complex patterns are combined with curls (Fig. 13.11).

In addition to the main types of patterns, various transitional forms from one type to another can be found. Sometimes hand patterns are characterized by delta counting. Triradius (delta) is the point where three systems of lines converge. Counting the number of triradii on both hands gives an idea of ​​the intensity of the pattern (delta count, or delta index). Delta account is determined by the total number of triradii on all ten fingers - from 0 to 20. A loop has one triradius, a curl has two, a complex pattern usually has two, an arc usually does not have a triradius.

In genetic work, pattern quantification, or ridge counting, is often used. Comb count represents the number of ridges from the delta to the center of the pattern. To determine this indicator, draw a straight line with a pencil between the triradius point and the center of the pattern on the print and count the number of ridges that it crossed. Neither the triradius point nor the center line of the pattern are included in the count.

The ridge count is determined for each finger separately and in total for five fingers of each hand. The total sum of the ridge counts of both hands is called the “total ridge count” and is designated TRC (total ridge count). The following pattern has been revealed: the more arcs on the fingers, the lower the TRC indicator. In the presence of curls and complex patterns, the total ridge count includes only the number of ridges on the side of the finger where there are more of them. It is allowed to count ridges on both sides.

The ridge count varies between people and on different fingers from 0 to 300 (on 10 fingers). The ridge count is not associated with sex, but sex chromosomes influence this trait, and the influence of X chromosomes is stronger than that of Y chromosomes (Table 13.4).

During group examinations, pattern symbols and ridge count indicators are written one under the other for each finger separately, starting with the thumb, and in the columns on the right are the summarized formulas for each hand:

Different ethnic groups differ in the frequency of patterns of one type or another and in ridge count indicators (Fig. 13.12).

It has been shown that children of parents with a high comb score are also characterized by a high comb score, and vice versa (Holt, 1959). The hypothesis of polygenic inheritance of the ridge count was proposed in 1931 by Bonnevie. Currently, a hypothesis has been proposed about the polygenic determination of the type of pattern on the fingers (Guseva I.S., 1974). According to this hypothesis, the highest degree of heritability of loop patterns is 95.2%; curls - 84.1% and arches - 38.9%. With an increase in the number of X chromosomes in the karyotype, the expressivity of system A increases due to a decrease in the expressivity of system W, i.e., with an increase in X chromosomes, the number of arc patterns increases and the overall ridge count decreases (Table 13.4). Genes of the L system have maximum expressivity in people with a minimum number of sex chromosomes (Shereshevsky-Turner syndrome, a large number of loops, increased ridge count).

For different ethnic groups, papillary patterns are usually specific: a native inhabitant of the Don can be distinguished from a native resident of the Far East. Residents of the Don should have loops on the second and fourth fingers, and a resident of the Far East should have a curl as the predominant pattern on their fingers. For Europeans suffering from schizophrenia, an increase in the number of curls on the fingers is observed. Palmoscopy- analysis of palm patterns. Palm patterns have three main furrows(Fig. 13.13), which become sharper when the palms are bent. Sometimes they are called flexion folds. The dermatoglyphic characteristics include patterns in the form of parallel lines, islands, etc.

Dermatoglyphics. The term was coined by Cumminson in 1926, but references and attempts at research into skin patterns began long before the science was officially recognized. When they talk about fingerprints, ridge or papillary patterns, ordinary people associate this with criminology and forensic medicine, although the scope of application of knowledge about dermatoglyphics is very extensive.

It's no secret that fingerprint analysis is currently the most accurate in identifying a person's identity. This is unique

So, basically, papillary patterns are divided into three types - arcs, loops and curls. But, of course, the qualitative indicator of each type has its own modifications, which we will try to consider more specifically in this article.

Arc and its types.

Standard arc. Denoted by the letter A - from English word- “arch” - arch. There are no triradius. By general appearance we can conclude that the energy travels along the papillary lines and makes a slight bend. Energy calmly flows through the papillaries, it is like a light, calm wave flowing in its measured stream.
- Arc with a loop inside - Combination of loop-arc elements. It occurs quite often, so it is important to be able to figure out whether a loop or arc predominates in the papillary pattern. Types of this pattern:

- Double loop - characterized by two triradii. Ulnarity-radiality is determined first by the lower loop, then by the upper one. Sometimes the loop can separate, so this pattern is very easy to confuse with one of the varieties of curl, especially when the ends of the loops are very narrowed. - The curl is a spiral. This pattern is very similar to the previous one, with the only difference being that the pattern is a rotating spiral, which consists of lines twisting around the center of the pattern. This type of curls can be right-handed or left-handed. Moreover, the right hand should have left-handed spirals, and the left hand should have right-handed ones. The type of spiral is determined in the same way as in cases with ulnar-radial loops. Those spirals that curl toward the thumb are considered right-handed. This pattern is designated as WS - Whorl Spiral - Curl - Spiral.

Elongated curl or Ellipse curl
This curl is designated as WE - Elongated Whorl

- Almond-shaped funnel curl. This curl is designated as WE - Elongated Whorl - Elongated Whorl.
Concentric circles are also a closed circle, only elongated, like an oval, flattened on both sides. It is not uncommon for such patterns to have no basal lines at the base.

- Complex curl that does not lend itself to the above classification. Predominant arc pattern (A):
Those whose finger patterns are dominated by arcs are distinguished by concrete thinking.
