Refinement and imitation of moonstone

On at the moment there is no information about the existence of production technologies that make it possible to obtain high-quality synthetic moonstone with the same properties and the same chemical composition, which is natural.

Imitations are known, which are mainly produced in India. In jewelry sold in most retail jewelry stores, there are two types of imitations: moonstone chips, compressed at high temperature, and glass vaguely reminiscent of adularia.

The main feature by which an imitation can be distinguished from a real moonstone is the absence of bluish-blue reflections under the surface of the stone at different viewing angles. The imitations never exhibit a pronounced blue highlight visible from certain angles. Instead, they exhibit a uniform white shimmer that is visible at all times and from any angle.

Natural adularia is a rather rare stone. Therefore, it is almost impossible to purchase jewelry with genuine natural moonstone in a regular jewelry store. Most likely, you will be lucky to find jewelry with natural adularia somewhere in Asia, but be prepared for the fact that this pleasure will cost you a lot.

Moonstone is particularly fragile and susceptible to temperature and weather changes.

The second name of the stone - adularia - is not entirely correct, since adularia is colorless orthoclase, and moonstone includes both orthoclase and albite. However, the color shifts characteristic of moonstone under lighting are usually called adularization.
