To make practical bed linen that will last you for many years, you need to purchase high-quality fabric made from 100% cotton. Thick calico is most suitable for this purpose.

When choosing fabric for bed linen, you must first of all pay attention to the density indicator, since it is this characteristic that reflects how many natural raw materials were used to make one meter of fabric. This information can be obtained by looking at the label attached to each bolt of material.

If the calico density is not lower than 128 grams per square meter, this means that it has good consumer properties, and you can safely purchase it for sewing bed linen.

Since calico is made from natural cotton, it doesn't come cheap, and you should be prepared to part with quite a lot of money.

If you have a limited budget, you can purchase polycotton - a fabric with a fairly high content of synthetic (polyester) fibers. Products made from polycotton are characterized by a smooth and shiny texture, high strength and resistance to shrinkage. The only drawback of these fabrics can be considered their insufficient hygroscopicity: they do not absorb moisture very well, and therefore sleeping on polycotton bedding is not very comfortable in hot weather. summer nights or in a too stuffy room.

Products of many Russian manufacturers (the leaders among which are Shuisky and Ivanovsky Textiles) producing fabrics High Quality, certified and equipped with company logos. Be sure to read the information on the label so as not to buy a low-quality Chinese counterfeit of a Russian brand.

How to make the correct calculation and cut the fabric?

Have you decided to sew your own bed linen, but don't know how much fabric you will need? To avoid making mistakes in your calculations, first of all take accurate measurements of all bedding: mattress, blanket and pillows.

You can simplify your task by taking an old set of bed linen (if, of course, you were satisfied with its size) and take measurements from it, not forgetting to add an extra 7-8 centimeters, which will be used as allowances for seams and inaccuracy of the cut, as well as will allow new linen to shrink without problems.

Rules for cutting bed linen:
  1. The flap of the pillowcase should be made at least 25 cm long: only in this case the pillow will not always crawl out of it.
  2. Never skimp on the length or width of the sheet: you can even add another 20 cm to the width of the previous sheet, and tuck the excess length under the mattress.
  3. When cutting out a new duvet cover, also increase its width by 6-7 centimeters, since even the highest quality natural cotton calico will certainly shrink after the first wash. After washing the new set, you will see whether the duvet cover needs to be sewn.

How to sew double bed linen?

Fabric calculation for it is done as follows:

  • The optimal fabric width for a double set is 220 cm, since it will eliminate the need to increase the width of the duvet cover and sheet using joining seams. This will not only save you time and effort, but will also make the cost of new underwear lower than in the store (although not too significantly).
  • The layout for a double set is as follows: you will need 7.45 m of fabric with a width of 220 cm: this amount will make a duvet cover, a sheet and three pillowcases measuring 70/70 or four pillowcases with side lengths of 50/70. With this layout, you will have no scraps left and will have a spare set of pillowcases.

To visualize the cut of the entire set, take a sheet of paper in a box and draw its diagram. You will get rectangles with sides:

  1. 365 x 220 cm (duvet cover),
  2. 205 x 220 cm (sheet),
  3. 175 x 220 cm. This rectangle needs to be divided into three or four equal parts (depending on what size pillowcases you need).

How much does it cost to sew bed linen?

It all depends on the size of your bedding and the quality of the fabric you choose for your set. The cost of high-quality calico with a width of 135 cm is approximately 90 rubles per meter, calico with a width of 150 cm costs a little more than 120 rubles, and the price of a meter of calico with a width of 220 cm exceeds 180 rubles.

We multiply the cost of one meter of fabric by the footage resulting from measuring the bedding, add the cost of thread to this amount and get the final figure.

The amount will be quite substantial, but making your own bed linen has a number of undoubted advantages:

  • You can choose the fabric of the desired color and good quality.
  • Do-it-yourself bed linen will be sewn to the exact size of your bed, which eliminates a number of inconveniences often experienced when using ready-made sets purchased in a store.
  • Your bedding set can have as many items as you need. As a rule, sheets and pillowcases last less than duvet covers, so you can sew not one, but two or three sheets and a couple of extra pillowcases. As a result, your bed will look aesthetically pleasing, and the linen will wear out fairly evenly.
  • A set of bed linen sewn by yourself will certainly be of high quality, since you will try to put not only skill, but also diligence into your work, because you are sewing it for the people closest to you.
  • You can sew a unique set of linen according to your own sketch. How to sew beautiful bed linen? You can show your imagination and combine fabrics, decorating the set with embroidery (cutwork embroidery looks very elegant), hemstitching and satin ribbons.

How to sew bed linen correctly?

  1. The first step is to decide on the types of seams that you will use in the process. Typically, bed linen sets are made using closed, double and linen seams, which, thanks to closed allowances, are particularly strong and durable. How are they performed? machine seams for linen- seaming and hemming:

This linen can withstand many washes. washing machine any type and serves for many years.

The linen seam has only one drawback: if the linen is made of thick calico, the seam can turn out to be quite rough, because it consists of six layers of fabric.

In this case, sections of dense fabric can not be folded, but processed using an overlocker: this option is more preferable for inexperienced seamstresses who find it difficult to make a high-quality linen seam without first basting the parts.

  2. The durability of bed linen often depends on the quality of the threads used to sew it: they must be durable and at the same time not too thick. High-quality threads are a guarantee of reliable seams that will not burst soon after sewing and will not cause fabric rupture.
  3. It is equally important to set the machine stitch pitch correctly. It can be considered optimal average value, since very fine stitching due to too frequent stitches can cause destruction of the fibers from which the fabric is made.

  1. Fold a piece of fabric (size 280 x 220 cm) in half with the wrong side facing out and sew up the top of the future product and the long side seam. To do this, we fold both cut edges together and, tucking them twice, carefully stitch them. This seam eliminates the need to process the side cuts remaining inside.
  2. When stitching the bottom of the duvet cover, we leave an unstitched area (about 50 centimeters long) in the center of the seam. Having processed it from the front side, we make fastenings on the sides and get a hole for the blanket.
  3. Having turned the product inside out, we admire the finished duvet cover.

  • Fold the side sections evenly, fold them twice and sew a stitch.

How to sew baby bedding? This question is often asked by expectant mothers who are looking forward to their first child and want to sew bed linen for the crib.

  • First, we measure the crib (usually its length is 120 cm and width 60 cm). For the youngest children, you can sew bumpers designed to protect babies from hitting the wooden lattice of the crib. To make the sides, you need to purchase thick fabric, four zippers and a sheet of thin foam rubber with a hard backing (as a filler).
  • The patterns for the sides are rectangles 60 x 40 cm and 120 x 40 cm. It is necessary to make two small and two large sides, which are oblong bags with clasps sewn into them and foam rubber inserted inside.

Before sewing the sides of each side, we put beautiful cotton ribbons folded in half into each corner of the workpiece: we will use them to tie the sides to the crib (the length of the ribbons is 60 cm and the width is 5-6 cm). In the middle of the long side (top and bottom) you will need to sew two additional ribbons. We turn the products inside out, sew in the locks and fill the sides with foam rubber.

How to sew beautiful bumpers with baby cot:

  • Sewing bedding for a newborn will also not be difficult for any mother who knows how to sew on a machine. For children's bedding, fabrics made from natural cotton (calico or satin) decorated with funny children's pictures are best suited.
For sewing sheets:

You will need a piece of fabric measuring 104 x 164 cm (we are talking about a standard crib and have already included the required seam allowances in the specified amount of fabric). Carefully fold the edges of the fabric (doing this twice, bending 5 mm each time) and stitch the sheet using a sewing machine. If the edge of the fabric has a selvage, it does not need to be hemmed. An exception is made only if this edge does not look aesthetically pleasing.

If you do not have sewing skills, it is better to pre-baste the folded edge or pin it together with safety pins.

The size of the duvet cover depends on the size of the duvet you have. When stitching the edges of the fabric, do not forget to decorate the hole through which the blanket is inserted.

Standard sizes baby pillow Usually they are 40 x 60 cm, but a newborn baby will not need it soon, since the smallest children sleep without pillows, so you can take your time with sewing a pillowcase.

  • A newborn baby needs several diapers, and not so much for swaddling, but for placing under the head: after all, babies often burp, and a diaper will prevent regurgitated food from seeping onto the bed linen. In this case, the mother will only have to change the soiled diaper, and not the entire set of baby bedding. For diapers, soft and warm flannel is best suited, the edges of which can be finished with a zigzag seam.

Do you need a canopy for a baby crib?

Many mothers refuse a canopy over their baby’s crib, completely unjustifiably considering it a dust collector. I would like to say a few words in defense of this accessory. A canopy can perform several very useful functions:

  1. It helps to diffuse too bright sunlight.
  2. Creates a feeling of comfort for the child.
  3. Protects the baby from insect bites in the hot season.
  4. Gives little man a feeling of security, fencing it off from a large space and creating a secluded corner for it.

As for collecting dust, just wash the canopy more often. And in order not to waste time on ironing, choose a fabric that does not need ironing at all.

For making a canopy you need to purchase:
  • 4 meters of transparent fabric that easily allows air to pass through (chiffon, organza, mesh or any other with the same qualities) 150 cm wide.
  • Two strips of the same fabric that was used to make the sides, measuring 200 x 22 cm. The purpose of these strips is to dim the lighting and protect the crib from direct sunlight.
  • A skein of bias tape.
  • Two strips of fabric for decorative ruffles measuring 200 x 44 cm. The fabric should be the same from which the entire canopy is made.

You can easily find step-by-step instructions for making a canopy on the Internet on sites dedicated to cutting and sewing, and we will return to the main topic of our conversation regarding the manufacture of bed linen sets.

We sew bed linen for a child

In order to sew a children's bedding set for a standard-sized crib, you will need a piece of high-quality calico measuring 2.5 x 2.2 meters, a zipper (50 cm long) and a roll of elastic. Our set will consist of a duvet cover, fitted sheet and pillowcase.

Before starting work, wash the fabric in warm water, dried and ironed.

Sew duvet cover for standard duvet size 110 x 140 cm:

  1. Fold the piece of fabric in half and cut a piece 143 cm long from it (3 cm will be used as allowances).
  2. We baste the zipper, carefully and separately overcast each section of this side of the future duvet cover, and sew it on a sewing machine.
  3. Sew the remaining two sides and finish the seams using an overlocker or a zigzag stitch.
  4. Turn it inside out ready product.

Sew baby sheet with elastic:

It is very convenient for use in a crib, as it tightly covers the mattress and does not slip or bunch up. To make it, we need a rectangular piece of fabric with dimensions 100 x 160 cm.

  1. Having folded the workpiece in four, in its upper right corner we cut out a square with a side length of 19 centimeters.
  2. We sweep away all four corners and do a preliminary fitting of the future product.
  3. We sew the corners on a machine and process the cuts with a zigzag or using an overlocker.
  4. Carefully fold the edges of the sheet and stitch them, not forgetting to leave four holes for the elastic (to do this, you need to step back twenty-five centimeters from the corners).
  5. Having inserted the elastic into the finished product, we tighten it, evenly distributing it over the entire sheet, and firmly sew the edges.

We will have a small scrap of fabric left from which we can sew a pillowcase for a pillow. You can do this either traditional way, described by us in step by step guide for making bed linen, or by making a small “smell” in the center of the pillowcase.

Sewing bedding for dolls, of course, is even easier, since everything can be done by eye, without bothering yourself with particularly careful measurements. It is enough that it matches the size of the doll's crib, and that the mattress is 3-4 cm longer than the doll for which it is intended. For the most small child If you are just learning the basics of playing mother-daughter, you can make an extremely simple set of bed linen, consisting of a mattress, a blanket and a pillow.

A blanket and pillow can be made from an old fleece scarf. This is a soft and warm material that a child will be happy to pick up. In addition, fleece does not fray, so the edges of the fabric do not need to be processed. A piece of flannel is suitable for the mattress. You can fill it with padding polyester or holofiber taken from an old pillow.

You can sew beautiful bedding for dolls, intended for older girls to play with, from fabric trimmed with delicate lace.

Sequencing:

Bed linen for dolls, used for playing “mother-daughter”, teaches children to master self-care skills through the example of manipulating dolls. By putting the doll to sleep, tucking and straightening the doll's crib, the baby thereby acquires useful skills that will be useful to him in life.

Not every housewife thinks about sewing bed linen. Modern industry supplies the market with such a huge variety of products in this category, where the abundance of colors, fabric textures and styles can satisfy the needs of even the most capricious buyer, that the idea of sewing “clothes” for your bed with your own hands will seem like a waste of time to many. But never before have flow products reached the high level of elegance and chic of things made personally, with “soul”.

Sometimes life situations prompt you to pick up a machine and start making duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases.

For example, non-standard parameters of bedroom furniture, an unusual design of a bedroom, or simply a desire to decorate your home, to introduce novelty and originality.

Let's figure out how to sew bed linen with your own hands!

Numerous experience shows that even completely inexperienced seamstresses are able to cope with the task on their own.

The first step is to take correct measurements in order to accurately calculate the fabric consumption for sewing the set. Good high-quality fabric also requires good material costs, so there is absolutely no need for unnecessary trimmings (although in a pinch, they will make excellent kitchen towels or other crafts). And the “shortfall” threatens to ruin the whole plan. By increasing the size, you will have to add unwanted seams, which absolutely do not contribute to comfort and coziness.

The simplest and optimal solution will be the purchase of a special bed linen, where the standard width of 2.20 m is already initially set. A good housewife knows that after washing, bed fabric shrinks by approximately 3-5% and, when calculating the footage for sewing, it is necessary to take into account individual characteristics material.

For example, let's take a standard teenage bed with a mattress width of 90 cm and a pillow of 60x60 cm.

Example of fabric calculation:

  • The bedding set will consist of 1 sheet, for which you will need fabric 90+30cm x 2 wide. You can add more fabric on both sides in order to easily adjust the edges of the sheet under the mattress, but within reasonable limits. The minimum additional width is 30 cm per allowance on both sides, calculated taking into account the height of the mattress and the launch.
  • When calculating the amount of fabric for 1 duvet cover, it is necessary to take into account the actual size of the duvet. To begin with, take two widths and add 10cm to them for allowances, 10cm for shrinkage and another 10cm for free movement.
    As a result, for a blanket 1.2 m wide, we get the width of the fabric for the duvet cover = 1.2 m x 2 + 10 cm + 10 cm + 10 cm.
Only 2m and 70cm. Add 10cm to the length for seams and allowance.
  • With pillowcases everything is quite simple. If the pillow is 70x70cm, then the length and width also correspond to the same dimensions + 10 cm for allowance. Don't forget about shrinkage - +10cm along the length of the fabric. It is much more economical to cut out a pillowcase if its width is positioned along the length of the purchased cut. As a result, according to the width of the cut, we get 2 lengths of the pillowcase + 20-30cm, and the length will be the width of the pillowcase and 10cm for the seams.

By summing up all the data, we obtain the required footage of fabric for sewing a set of bed linen. A thrifty housewife does not throw money away. This means that, having calculated everything correctly and double-checked it, we buy the fabric back to back.

Calculation example for a 1.5 bed set (duvet cover, sheet and pillowcase):

What is the best fabric for bedding?

The characteristics of the material we choose for sewing bed linen also have an important influence on the quality of sleep.

The optimal solution is natural fabrics such as silk, linen, cotton.

Natural properties of natural pure materials provide maximum comfort and amenities. They are completely non-allergenic, hygroscopic and neutral to static electricity, which means they are ideal for people of any age, even newborns.

The affordable price and unique natural properties of natural, environmentally friendly cotton make it very popular among practical housewives.

Cotton fabrics, in addition, are very practical: they can be easily washed and bleached, do not deform, can withstand different temperature changes and are ironed perfectly. Their only slight drawback can be considered the initial shrinkage, about 3-4 cm per 1 meter of length.

Brief characteristics of some fabrics:

  • Chintz attracts with its variety of colors and the cheapest price, but the low density of chintz cannot ensure longevity. As a result, the linen quickly wears out and loses its attractive original appearance.
  • Calico also pleases with its affordable prices and colors, and its density is higher. It does not shed, and over time it only becomes softer and more comfortable.
  • Flannel can also be used for bedding. It is used for sewing diapers and linen for newborns. Flannel in its properties is very similar to calico.
  • Soft and pleasant to the touch, satin is a stronger and more durable material, but increased quality characteristics also correspond to a higher price.

Linen occupies a leading position among mid-price fabrics in terms of its natural physical and mechanical qualities and beneficial effects on the human body.

Natural linen does not lend itself well to coloring, so it has soft pastel colors. The production of flax is highly labor intensive, which affects its price.

The stores offer a huge range of fabrics of various parameters and different prices to choose from. Therefore, everyone can choose the optimal combination of cost, quality and appearance.

Thread selection

Threads also play an equally significant role in achieving the highest level comfort. When choosing a color scheme in accordance with the color and tone of the material, do not forget about the quality of the thread and its parameters. The thickness of the thread affects the quality of the seam.

Modern manufacturers offer big choice strong, reliable and good threads.

Suitable for bedding:

  • smooth 100% polyester Durafix thread
  • professional high-strength polystrong
  • multi-purpose Capiton thread, which fits perfectly and is practically not felt at hand.

When choosing threads in a store, you should pay attention to the markings; there are two types:

  • Lx is linen and cotton
  • LL – a combination of flax and lavsan
  • The numbers indicate the actual thickness.

Synthetic threads, labeled as 100% polyester, are much superior to natural types in terms of twist quality and practically do not fray.

You can tell the good ones from the not so good ones yourself. An excellent thread is absolutely even and stretches smoothly. Low quality threads have an uneven structure - thin areas and compactions. In the car it will go unevenly, often break off and curl. The seam will also be uneven.

Small pattern tricks

Cutting is a moment no less important than counting fabric consumption. The saying that you need to measure seven times - indisputable fact. You can’t sew something cut back, so first we’ll prepare the fabric we’ve chosen.

Adviсe:

  • Before cutting out the bedding set, it is better to iron the material with steam to remove all folds and wrinkles, as well as to make the first initial shrinkage.
  • The cut prepared in this way is leveled on the floor.
  • We make markings using colored chalk and a felt-tip pen. If you don’t have either one or the other on hand, an aspirin tablet is good for colored fabrics, as it leaves a noticeable line.
  • We install all markings on both edges, which will eliminate the possibility of inaccuracy and curvature of the cutting line.

How to sew bed linen with your own hands

So, we have determined the size, texture, color and fabric consumption. We bought everything we needed. Removed everything unnecessary and prepared workplace. Now you can start sewing the kit.

All seams of bed linen are usually made using the sewing seam technique.

Stages of this technique:

  • The parts are folded inward with their front sides so that the lower side is extended outward by 6-7 mm, for further laying it on the upper part.
  • The seam constructed in this way is secured with stitching.
  • Next you need to lay out the fastened parts in different sides and lay a new line, while closing the first one.

This bed seam technique ensures high strength and reliability of the connection.

We perform all connecting seams using this technique. The edges of the sheet are hemmed with a regular seam.

For the duvet cover, it is necessary, in the most convenient place for you, to leave an unsewn hole, the edges of which are also processed with a simple seam.

Design

Acting as your own designer, you are free to fantasize on any topic, the main thing is that you feel cozy and comfortable. It is not at all necessary to sew new bedding to support the existing interior. Sewing with my own hands provides a unique opportunity to radically change the image of the bedroom. Make it quiet and calm, or romantic, or filled with love and promises.

Just two actions: changing curtains and bed linen can radically change your bedroom.

No two solutions are the same. But your favorite color, a few frills, hearts and bows, soft and high-quality materials will give gorgeous results.

As you know, a third of our life is spent sleeping. Our strength is restored in sleep. When we are sick, sleep is the best medicine. Sleep refreshes, rejuvenates, restores. The quality of sleep is influenced by many factors, including external ones. Therefore, fabrics made from natural cotton, linen and silk materials are used for bed linen.

The most commonly used cotton fabrics include chintz, calico, and satin. All these fabrics are made from 100% cotton, do not cause allergies, are hygroscopic (moisture-absorbing), do not accumulate static electricity, can easily be machine washed, do not deform, but give an initial shrinkage of 3-4 cm per meter of length.

Cheapest fabric - chintz, has attractive colors. When you hear the word “chintz”, you immediately think of a white earth fabric with a small floral pattern. Chintz is a cheap, thin, lightweight material of low density.

Calico Most often used when sewing inexpensive bed linen. It is denser than chintz, does not fade, and after long service it becomes softer and easier to iron.

Linen from satin the most durable, easy to maintain, smooth, soft and pleasant to the touch, but the price of the set is much more expensive than from chintz and calico.

Flax is considered the best for its physical and mechanical properties for human health. It never comes in bright colors because this fiber by its nature does not lend itself well to dyeing. Its production is very labor-intensive, which is why flax is expensive.

If we compare the characteristics of fabrics when choosing bed linen, I would choose calico or satin. In addition, the industry now produces these fabrics in convenient widths - 160 and 220 centimeters.

When calculating fabric, take into account shrinkage of approximately 5% in the warp and 2% in the weft.

To guide fabric consumption:
One-and-a-half set (sheet 150x215, duvet cover 145x215, pillowcase 70x70 - 2 pcs.)

Fabric consumption for a width of 220 cm = 6.30 m
Fabric consumption for a width of 150 cm = 8.50 m

Double set (sheet 200x220, duvet cover 180x215, pillowcase 70x70 - 2 pcs.)
Fabric consumption for a width of 220 cm = 7.45 m

Euro set (sheet 240x220, duvet cover 200x220, pillowcase 70x70 - 2 pcs.)
Fabric consumption for a width of 220 cm = 8.30 m

Family set (sheet 240x220, duvet cover 150x215 - 2 pcs., pillowcase 70x70 - 2 pcs.)
Fabric consumption for a width of 220 cm = 10.40 m

Children's crib set (sheet 100x130, duvet cover 100x130, pillowcase 40x60 - 1 pc.)
Fabric consumption for a width of 150 cm = 4.10 m

Before going to the store, let’s calculate the required amount of fabric for a set of blankets measuring 155x200, a mattress 90x200 cm and pillows 50x50 cm. Let’s take a simple model, but combined with companion fabrics and consisting of one duvet cover, two sheets and two pillowcases. This set is easy to use and maintain.

We need to decide what parts we will cut out and what sizes they will be. To do this, let's focus on the width of the fabric. The most convenient width is 220 cm. We will make calculations for this.

Sheet: we will cut it across the fabric. That is, the width is 220 cm and will be the length of the sheet. All we have to do is decide on the width. Since the width of our mattress is 90 cm, we need to take into account the values for the bending of the sheets on the side parts of the mattress, allowances for hemming the edges of the sheets and for shrinkage of the fabric. 90+30x2 +2x2 +6=160 cm. For the sheet you will need fabric 160 cm.

Duvet cover: We will position the cut in the same way - across the fabric. In addition to the length, width and seam allowances, it is necessary to provide an allowance for a loose fit, which depends on the thickness of the blanket. On average, it is 5 cm. The length of the rectangle in the cut is equal to the length of the blanket, plus shrinkage and seams. 200 (blanket length) +7 (seam allowances) + 8 (shrinkage) +5 = 220 cm. The width of the rectangle in the cut is equal to the width of the blanket, plus seam allowances and fabric shrinkage and freedom of fit. 155 (blanket width) + 4 (seam allowances) + 6 (shrinkage allowance) + 5 = 170 cm There will be two such rectangles, only from different fabrics.

For duvet cover fabric required 170+170= 340cm

Pillowcase we will sew it with a border 5 cm wide (another name for the border is “French ears”) and a flap of 20 cm. We will also position the cut according to the width of the fabric. For pillowcase required: 50 (pillow size) +5x2 (border)+2 (seam allowances)+3 cm (for shrinkage and freedom)= 65cm.

To summarize: for a sheet -160 cm + a sheet made of companion fabric 160 cm, for a duvet cover - 170 + 170 = 340 cm, for a pillowcase -65 cm and plus 65 cm - a second pillowcase made of companion fabric. We should now have another combined “bonus” pillowcase.

You will need (395 cm + 1% for possible fabric alignments) 4 meters of each type of fabric
Layout on main fabric:

Total: 8.0 meters of fabric per set of 1 duvet cover, 2 sheets, 3 pillowcases.

You can buy fabric without leaving your home. For example, an interesting site for Ivanovo poplin from the manufacturer.

But today we are going to the store with calculations. If you don’t combine anything, it’s easy to choose in our stores. We will sew a set of linen for a girl's bed. For my idea, the choice of fabrics was small.
That's what I bought!

As you can see, for the sheets I took flannel (150 cm wide - 4.6 meters for two sheets), which is more suitable in color to my design and has the same properties as calico - it’s not for nothing that it is used for diapers and baby underwear. The rest is as planned - the calico is green and has a small green pattern that harmonizes well with each other and the flannel.
It is most convenient to do the layout on the floor in the morning, when no one is bothering you.

Cutting bed linen is a very important moment. Fabrics, as a rule, are purchased end-to-end and mistakes are unacceptable. Therefore, the saying: “Measure twice, cut once,” fits perfectly when cutting bed linen.
Before cutting, it is necessary to iron the fabric with a steam iron. By doing this, you will not only remove folds and wrinkles from the fabric, but also partially de-decatulate it (ensure the initial shrinkage of the fabric under the influence of temperature and steam). This is especially true for thin calicoes.

First you need to take measurements from the blanket, mattress and pillows.

So. My blanket is 2 m by 1.5 m. The pillow is 0.6 m by 0.6 m.
If your sizes are different, you will have to make your own adjustments in the calculation.

IMPORTANT. When cutting, take into account 3-4 cm for each part for seams and for shrinkage of the fabric after washing.
I sew bed linen from calico. The width of the calico is 2.2 m and 1.5 m.
rice. 1. Cut out a single bedding set made of calico, 220 cm wide.
I make a hole in the duvet cover at the bottom.

For a given fabric width, you will need 5.1 m of calico + 0.1 m for shrinkage. In total, we buy 5.2 m of calico.Double set.

The most optimal option for cutting a standard 2-bed bedding set is proposed in this diagram. It is best to buy fabric for sewing bed linen with a width of 220 cm.

In order to sew bed linen without “waste”, you need to buy calico with a width of 220 cm a little more, only 25 cm. And then you will cut out 3 pillowcases instead of 2, but without scraps of fabric. If you still decide to buy fabric for a set of bed linen with two pillowcases, then simply unfold the pillowcases crosswise in the diagram. This will leave you with a lunge of 45cm by 155cm. Actually, you can sew a baby pillowcase from it.

It is best to buy fabric for sewing bed linen with a width of 220 cm. Firstly, you do not have to make joining seams to increase the width of the sheet or duvet cover. And secondly, in terms of cost, bed linen made from this particular width of fabric will not cost you much, but it will be cheaper than from other widths of calico.

Accessories made independently are significantly superior to purchased underwear in many respects. Firstly, it's cheaper. Secondly, you can realize your fantasies by sewing a set with lace inserts, guipure or frills. Thirdly, it is not difficult to sew pillowcases and duvet covers strictly according to size. Fourthly, no one will bother you to make spare sheets.

Preparing for work

How to sew bed linen so that it meets all requirements and is beautiful at the same time? As practice shows, even beginners sewing are able to produce a set that will become the real pride of the housewife.

To sew your own bed linen, you need to consider a few points. So before you start shopping and cutting, be sure to check out these six tips from the pros.

  1. Selection of fabric, threads. This determines how comfortable your sleep will be. Give preference to natural cotton fabrics that are breathable, hygroscopic and meet hygiene requirements. AND Special attention pay attention to the threads. They can significantly complicate the sewing process or make it as easy as possible.
  2. Steaming the material. Before you start cutting, iron the fabric with hot steam. This will eliminate all bends and folds that disrupt the cutting process. In addition, the steamed material will give an initial shrinkage, and this will prevent errors with dimensions.
  3. Smooth surface. It is necessary to cut the material on a flat surface, otherwise distortions cannot be avoided. Few people will be able to find such table sizes at home. Therefore, it is best to prepare the floor in the largest room.
  4. Setting markings. When measuring the sizes of sheets, duvet covers, outlining the contours of pillowcases, be sure to set markings along both edges. It is best to use a special long ruler and use chalk (you can use soap or aspirin tablets) to draw a cut line. This will allow you to cut out a product with smooth edges.
  5. Selection of seams. For the manufacture of linen, three types of seams are used: linen, closed and double. They are all closed, in other words, they tightly hide sections of material. These seams allow the product to achieve high strength. By the way, it is the linen seam that is used to make jeans. But if you use durable fabric, the linen seam will be excessively rough. Thus, it will significantly deteriorate the quality of the laundry. In this case, it is recommended to process the material sections with an overlocker. But do not use a zigzag stitch for this. Reviews from craftswomen indicate that it will only worsen the situation.
  6. Machine step. To give the products strength, inexperienced seamstresses make the machine step minimal, believing that such a stitch is much better. This is not true. Frequent punctures of the fabric lead to destruction of the fibers. As a result, unaesthetic “holes” remain on the fabric, puffs appear, and material deformation occurs. To avoid this, set the stitch pitch to medium. But don’t rush to sew the product. Use a small piece of fabric and check it for optimal size.

If you're a new tailor, don't jump into heavy projects right away. Make one simple set of underwear to fill your hand. You can gradually complicate the technology by experimenting with lace, frills, satin ribbons, and combining different fabrics. And over time, you can complicate the task and sew a sheet with an elastic band.

Material selection

Fabric intended for bed linen must allow moisture to pass through and ensure free air circulation. Choose one that can absorb sweat. Touching the material should feel pleasant. And one more requirement for bed linen is hypoallergenic. Natural fabrics made from cotton, linen or silk meet all these criteria. Bamboo is not far behind them.

From natural raw materials, using various techniques weaves, a wide variety of fabrics are created. Most contain a small proportion of synthetic fibers. Thanks to such weaves, the material gains strength, is easier to iron, and is cheaper. To decide which fabric is best for your bedding, check out these six common bedding materials.

  1. Chintz. Cheap and practical fabric, does not require special care. But it is extremely short-lived. Frequent washing leads to damage to the material. It becomes thinner, can shrink, and can shed.
  2. Satin.
  3. This fabric, thanks to its weave, has a smooth and shiny surface. The material is durable and highly wear-resistant. It practically does not shrink, does not fade, and can withstand repeated washing. Despite the cotton raw material, satin is significantly more expensive than all other cotton fabrics. This material will greatly benefit from a combination with guipure and lace.
  4. Calico. The fabric is stiff. High-quality material will ensure a long service life. Calico will withstand multiple washes, while completely retaining its shape and color. Terry jersey
  5. . Soft and very delicate fabric with small fibers. It is pleasant to the touch and does not require ironing. This linen will keep you warm even on the coldest nights. Such a bed may stretch over time. And one more significant disadvantage is that terry knitwear takes a long time to dry after washing.
  6. Percale. Reliable, fairly durable fabric. It is quite thin, but at the same time very reliable. The material can easily be washed and retains heat. Linen . It is almost impossible to find fabric made from pure linen. Most often, this fiber is combined with other raw materials. Linen fabrics have the ability to destroy everything pathogenic microflora

. Therefore, such bed linen will become a real lifesaver on hot summer days.

Who doesn't dream of silk underwear? The delicacy and softness of the fabric evokes an association with luxury and romance. However, it is absolutely not recommended for beginning craftswomen to start with silk. This is one of the most complex fabrics, with which even professionals have difficulties working.

What does the thread marking say? Don't lose sight of the threads. They play no less a role in the manufacture of bed linen. Choose threads according to color scheme

  • , analyze their quality and thickness. The following recommendations will help you with this.. To sew a bedding set, select Durafix (100% polyester), PolyStrong (high-strength threads), Confil (multi-purpose threads) threads. They fit well on the fabric and do not complicate sewing.
  • Labeling. Pay attention to the thread markings. She will indicate the raw material and thread thickness. For example, “LL” indicates that the thread is made from lavsan and linen, while “LH” indicates a combination of linen and cotton. The numbers indicate the true thickness of the thread.
  • Quality . Before purchasing, unwind some thread and inspect it. It should have the same thickness along its entire length. If there are areas of compaction, refuse to purchase. The thread will constantly break during stitching, which will significantly complicate the sewing process.

Sizing and calculating the amount of fabric

To calculate the correct amount of fabric, you need to determine which set you want to receive. Consider how many pillowcases, sheets and duvet covers you will need. To calculate the fabric, use the bed linen size table below. The sizes presented in the table are standard. If your pillow, blanket or mattress differs from the usual dimensions, you should not rely on these parameters.

Drawing up a diagram

It is very important to correctly calculate how much fabric is needed to sew bed linen, so as not to make a mistake with the sizes. If you buy less material, you may be left without a pillowcase, or you will have to give up the sheets. To prevent this from happening, take paper and sketch out an approximate diagram, carefully recording all the dimensions. Typically the width of the fabric is 220 cm. For example, if you want to sew a 1.5-bed set, the calculation will look something like this.

  • Bed sheet. The standard width of a mattress is 120x190 cm. Therefore, the width of the sheet should be 120 cm + 30 cm (free sagging on one side) + 30 cm (sagging on the other side), a total of 180 cm. The length of the product will correspond to the width of the sheet - 220 cm. In the diagram step back 180 cm from the edge.
  • Duvet cover. The standard dimensions of a blanket are 140x200 cm. To determine the width required material make the following calculation: 140 cm (one surface of the duvet cover) + 140 cm (second surface) + 10 cm (loose fit) + 10 cm (shrinkage) + 10 cm (seam allowance). Total 310 cm. The length will also be 220 cm. Mark another rectangle on your diagram with dimensions 220x310 cm.
  • Pillowcase. If the pillow is 70x70 cm, then the calculation is carried out as follows: 70 cm + 10 cm (for loose fit and seam allowance) + 10 cm (for shrinkage), total 90 cm. Mark the pattern of the pillowcase on the diagram, retreating 90 cm along the edge. Set it down. 70 cm (one surface of the pillow) + 70 cm (second side) + 20 cm (for valve) + 10 cm (for allowance) + 10 cm (for shrinkage). Total 180 cm.

Now all that remains is to add up all the resulting dimensions: 180 cm (sheet) + 310 cm (duvet cover) + 90 cm (pillowcase) = 580 cm. This means that for a 1.5-bedroom set you will need a piece of fabric 6 m long, with a width of 2 ,20 m.

How to sew bed linen with your own hands: step-by-step instructions

Cut out the fabric using the diagram you drew, like a sketch. Double-check yourself carefully and only then cut along the intended lines. You should have three pieces: a sheet, a duvet cover and a pillowcase. Step-by-step instructions will help you understand how to sew bed linen.

sheet

  1. If the edge of the sheet looks aesthetically pleasing, then leave it without a hem.
  2. Fold the open cut by 2.5 cm, fold it again so that the edge is hidden inside.
  3. Baste the hem by hand to prevent it from unraveling.
  4. Machine stitch along this basting.
  5. Process the opposite, open section of the sheet in the same way.

Duvet cover

  1. Double fold all sides.
  2. Fold the fabric in half along the fold line, right side inward.
  3. Secure with pins or basting to prevent the material from slipping or shifting.
  4. Sew all sides (except the fold), leaving an opening of approximately 20-25 cm for the blanket.
  5. Be sure to make fastenings near the hole so that the stitching does not unravel in the future.

Pillowcase

  1. Initially, finish the open sections with a double hem.
  2. Now fold the pillowcase face inward, with the flap on top.
  3. Baste and then double-stitch the side seams.
  4. Turn the pillowcase inside out and iron it.

In order to sew bed linen correctly and not make mistakes with the sizes, experienced craftswomen recommend initially washing new fabric. It will give the initial, most noticeable shrinkage. This is especially true for chintz.

If you have a sewing machine at home and it is simply sitting idle, we suggest you save a little of your family budget and sew your own bed linen, as our craftsman did. Pillowcases: 50x70 or 70x70 cm.

I sewed a one and a half set with two pillowcases. I have highlighted its dimensions at the top. With a fabric width of 220 cm, a one-and-a-half set has a length of 530 cm. There are a lot of colors of bed fabric now, it’s easy to see. I love green color, that’s why my choice fell on light green fabric. The picture shows how the cut should be placed. Ideally, you need to take fabric 10 cm larger to allow for seam allowances. Between sections of parts you need to retreat a couple of centimeters to the hem on each side.

First, I cut 100 cm from the length into pillowcases. Their width is 50 cm and length is 70 cm. I cut off the shaded part. The shaded part in the picture is the remainder of the fabric. If desired, you can sew small pillows from it or put it on napkins. The dotted lines mark the fold lines. I cut the pillowcase cut in half along the marked line. Next you need to cut the duvet cover piece from the sheet. I started with the biggest and most difficult one: the duvet cover. I cut off an extra five centimeters from the bottom of the workpiece. Folded along the length along the line marked with a dotted line. I sew the top of the duvet cover and the long side seam as in the picture: I folded both sections of the fabric together twice and stitched along the edge. This way it turns out simply and reliably and there is no need to process the slices - they are inside.

At the bottom of the duvet cover, I make an unstitched section in the middle of the seam. Then on the front side I stitch it along the edge and make bartacks along the edges. This hole is for threading a blanket into the duvet cover.

I do this and am always glad that the days of Soviet duvet covers with diamonds on top are over. Because it seems to me that it is much simpler and more practical: the blanket can be placed on one side of the body or the other. The width of the hole is arbitrary (mine is 50 cm). Turn it inside out: the duvet cover is ready!

Now it's time for the pillowcases. The hardest thing with them is folding them correctly. The photo shows that the 30 cm piece, which should be inside the pillowcase and create a “pocket” for the pillow, should be on top when stitched! In other words, we fold the pillowcase for stitching like this: we measured 70 cm, turned it face to face, and everything that was left was folded up.

The photo shows that the easiest and most reliable way to sew the edges of a pillowcase, like a duvet cover, is to fold the edge once or twice and stitch it.

All! The pillowcases are ready!

The easiest way to sew a sheet is to fold all open edges twice and stitch along the edge.

It takes about three hours to make such a bedding set, but we save money and enjoy the joy of doing it ourselves. The benefit of making your own bedding is that you can adjust all the sizes yourself to fit your blankets and pillows.

Sewing your own bed sheets is scary only for the first time! The second time you do it with ease. Therefore, do not be lazy and try to do something with your own hands, especially since you have detailed instructions that outline the entire process of sewing bed linen step by step. The only thing that is required of you is to buy fabric, threads and, of course, availability sewing machine, because it will take a very long time to sew by hand. Good luck in your endeavors and don’t be afraid, everything is much simpler than it might seem!
