The scariest PC games in the world. The scariest games for PC

There are a lot of games in the horror genre. There are fewer good horror games. And there are very few games that leave you wanting to turn off the light for several nights. Having studied reviews in Russian and foreign publications, we have selected the most scary games on PC. The list includes both quite old and very recent “horror stories”.

The top 10 scariest games are sorted by year of release on PC.

When it comes to the gaming embodiment of real-life horror, one cannot help but remember the cult game Silent Hill 2. It is a disturbing and psychological journey into the thoughts of the main character and the tortured souls he meets along the way. Emotional tragedy, guilt, anger, love and sexual violence the creators of "Silent Hill 2" embodied in their creation with amazing grace and skill.

A significant role in creating the paradoxical and psychedelic atmosphere of the game was played by musical accompaniment, as well as strange elements such as vertical corridors, traffic lights working in an empty city, red squares, doors in the floor, etc.

9. Doom 3, 2004

In 9th place in the top scariest games on PC is an old, but by no means useless game that can still scare you to the bone.

It focuses on a rapidly growing arsenal of weapons with which you can kill an army of a wide variety of evil spirits that attack the player from ambush or sneak in the shadows.

The atmosphere of most levels is intentionally made as dark as possible, and the game's creators paid considerable attention to lighting effects to create the right mood for players.

It's better not to play Doom 3 at night, your screams of horror may wake up others.

8. Dead Space, 2008

Like all the scariest games on PC, Deep Space often tests the player's psyche, subtly mixing violence and paranoia to create an atmospheric and relentlessly dark vision.

The character will have to act on board spaceship"Ishimura" with dark corridors and a large number corners in which you can hide from creepy necromorph monsters. But there are still more monsters in Dead Space than there are places to hide from them. And unlike opponents in other games, these guys don't have an easy time getting a bullet through their brain—sometimes their heads aren't even where they should be.

7. Amnesia: The Dark Descent, 2010

On the seventh line of the list of the scariest games on the computer is a project full of tension, panic and anxiety. He manages to refrain from the “monster jumping around the corner” clichés. Instead, the game scares jaded gamers through its clever use of audio and its unique atmosphere. The inability to fight off pursuers, coupled with a sanity system that prevents the player from looking directly at disfigured monsters, makes every encounter with an enemy highly undesirable.

As the game progresses, safe areas become less frequent and the narrative changes from simply grim to downright nightmarish. After all, something (or someone) is tirelessly following the main character.

6. Outlast, 2013

This game takes place in an abandoned psychiatric hospital, filled with deranged and disfigured patients, as well as bloodthirsty staff, whom the player must avoid at all costs. Unless, of course, you want everything internal organs his character became an addition to the local surroundings.

To find your way in the dark corridors of Outlast, you need to use a video camera with a night vision device. This gives the game a distinctly creepy visual feel, making the player feel vulnerable to the baddies lurking behind.

Gambling magazine named Outlast the best horror game of 2013.

5. Alien: Isolation, 2014

One of the most terrible computer games The 21st century will force the player to find himself alone with a monster in the gloomy and dark corridors of the huge space trading station "Sevastopol".

Deadly, cunning and completely devoid of pity, a creature that can appear at any moment, without warning: what else could you expect from an antagonist in a horror game? It is impossible to run away from him openly, and all that remains is to move slowly, carefully thinking through every next step. However, sooner or later the Alien will find its prey.

In numerous reviews, users note the excellently selected audio of the game, nice graphics, as well as a vintage setting reminiscent of the very first Alien film.

4. SOMA, 2015

This game can be called an intellectual horror. Unable to attack enemies, the player is forced to stealthily navigate the underwater research station PATHOS-2, shrouded in an atmosphere of loneliness and fear. Beautiful and dark underwater landscapes, robots that claim to be people, last words now dead station employees, sounding from “black boxes” - all this allows SOMA to achieve a full immersion effect and play with the gamer’s imagination, trying to put more pressure on the fear of death.

This is not the kind of horror that will take the player by the hand and show where to go and what to do in order to survive. You have to figure everything out by trial and error.

Separately, it is worth noting the unusual theme of the game and its excellent soundtrack.

3. The Evil Within 2, 2017

This exciting, challenging and action-packed game is a worthy successor to the traditions of the first part of The Evil Within. Now Detective Sebastian Castellanos must save his daughter in the city of Union, created within the STEM system.

The developers took into account the mistakes made in the first part and significantly improved the gameplay, making character control more convenient and adding simple and well-functioning stealth.

A world full of monsters with unpredictable behavior patterns, off-putting scenes (though fewer than in the first The Evil Within), and the need to save every bullet will provide the player with many unforgettable moments.

2. Darkwood, 2017

At the center of the plot - mysterious man, cooking mushrooms in a house right in the middle of a plague-infected forest. During daylight, the player can freely roam the surrounding area, full of poisonous mushrooms, fight off rabid dogs, deer and other infected animals, collect resources and try to figure out how his character ended up here. But as dusk falls, the only sensible option is to return to your home and barricade all the windows and doors. And hope that on this night the creatures of darkness will pass by.

Darkwood has a remarkable ability to scare without even showing the monsters up close. Rusting sounds, inhuman screams and creaking doors constantly keep you in suspense, and as the plot progresses, the darkness thickens, and it is already difficult to distinguish between reality and illusion.

1. Resident Evil 7, 2017

Inspired by the popularity of claustrophobic horror games such as Amnesia and Outlast, Resident Evil 7 traps the player in the home of the crazy Baker family. The house is not just dozens of corridors with hidden enemies, but a huge puzzle that requires the player to find keys to unlock new areas. The atmosphere of horror and claustrophobia is complemented by a flashlight that illuminates only a small area in front of the character and the wooden floors of the house, which betray both the player’s steps and those of his pursuers.

Replacing legions of zombies with ruthless human antagonists is perhaps Capcom's smartest decision in over a decade of their flagship Resident Evil series.

Do you remember the first time you were scared of the game? Yes, yes, I remember. Trite and predictable, this was the very first Resident Evil on the PlayStation. We, children, are not at all in a dark room, summer (one of those endless ones) and Jill’s first meeting (the first playthrough was for her, yes, because of the presence of a gun) with a zombie.

It was then that the psyche adapted, it became no longer so easy to scare, horror began to be perceived simply as another genre, part of the gaming industry. But not then. However, we have not forgotten how to be afraid; there were truly scary games even after Resident Evil. Below is their top, certainly personal, but quite mainstream.

In parentheses it is indicated on which platform I personally played these games.

Resident Evil (PlayStation)

The first and favorite, the main horror game in my life, like Final Fantasy VII the main JRPG or Baldur’s Gate the main CRPG. Scary, stylish, full of conventions, with creepy zombies, video inserts, rotten dogs jumping out of windows, high level complexity. Everything is as it should be!

I still remember the location of the rooms of the mansion and what lies where and who stands where. A landmark project for the industry. In addition, it received a wonderful remake on the GameCube, and then on other consoles.

Silent Hill 2 (PlayStation 2)

It was the second Silent Hill that turned out to be the most frightening in the series for me. In addition, the most interesting, most sincere, with beautiful story love and the best fog on the other side of the Austrian lakes (already in real life).

The game design turned out to be so perfect that the project turned out to be for all times, not outdated, and this game reveals itself for everyone in a special way.

Forbidden Siren (PlayStation 2)

My girlfriend's (later wife's) favorite horror game, and one of the most unusual games of the genre on the PlayStation 2. An unusual experience of looking at the world through the eyes of a zombie, incredible design solutions and a truly extremely depressing atmosphere.

The first part is the best and is the one you should play.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly (PlayStation 2)

Stylish, very beautiful, musical history losses with a purely Japanese soul, frightening rather with its truthfulness and true sadness, which literally pours out onto the player from the screen. And here you have to face nightmares face to face, and not run away from them.

It’s better not to play when you’re depressed...

Until Dawn (PlayStation 4)

Scary in a different way than all the games mentioned above. This is a teen horror with a lot of wow moments that always keeps you on the edge of your seat. It’s scary, first of all, because everything really depends on your choice!

And you make every decision without knowing where it will ultimately lead.

Haunting Ground (PlayStation 2)

A story about a sexy girl who gets into a very... bad story, against which insane, almost supernatural villains are up in arms, and whose only friend is a faithful dog. One of the most underrated and, at the same time, best games genre on PS2.

Plus, it’s impossible not to fall in love with Fiona!

(PlayStation 4)

“Seven” returned the franchise to its roots, turning out to be a truly scary game that scared you not with hundreds of monsters on the screen and dozens of guns, but made you feel like a helpless creature in front of circumstances and enemies.

The view from the eyes is appropriate. Quite.

Clock Tower (PlayStation)

Not everyone will agree with the choice, but this is indeed a very scary game in which all the player can do is try not to get caught by a crazed maniac with scissors.

I remember that I played the pirated version with a translation into Russian. It was more than 20 years ago, I remember that I later dreamed about some scenes of Clock Tower at night.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (GameCube)

Decent, very interesting, varied, with a cool plot, this is Eternal Darkness, a game that could only appear in the era of 6th generation consoles.

Exclusive for GameCube with Lovecraftian motifs.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (Xbox)

And I already played it on Xbox. However, the game is scary at the beginning, then it turns into a dull action movie with controversial design decisions and a stupid plot.

But the beginning here is truly creepy, probably the creepiest in a video game.

What else? A lot of things, actually. There are a lot of scary games released on consoles. I recommend some of them.

Other scary games

  • Resident Evil 2 (PlayStation 2): Great old school horror. It’s both scary (although not as much as in the first part) and interesting.
  • Resident Evil Code: Veronica (Dreamcast): One of the best games for the Dreamcast and the last Resident Evil of true old school.
  • Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii): Wonderful Silent Hill, the best after the second part. You can also play on PS2.
  • Obscure 1 and 2 (PlayStation 2): Not too scary, but an excellent co-op mode, which is rare for horror games.
  • Forbidden Siren 2 (PlayStation 2): Still a great horror, a little less scary and a lot more delusional than the original.
  • Siren: Blood Curse (PlayStation 3): Reimagining the first Forbidden Siren with beautiful graphics.
  • P. T. (PlayStation 2): What could have been Silent Hills, but ended up being a scary demo.
  • Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water (Wii U): The best after the second part of Fatal Frame. Dot.
  • Alan Wake (Xbox 360): More interesting than scary, but it has its moments.
  • (PlayStation 2): A very rare game, not very highly regarded in the press, but nevertheless quite scary. And it puts pressure on the psyche, be healthy.

There has recently been an addition to this series: a new Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs has been released, which has not yet gained the same popularity as its older sister, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. This one of the scariest games is still, since its release in 2010, popular and frightening as before, although it has been covered far and wide. It would seem that what’s so terrible about a game where main character doesn’t leave the basements of a dark castle, solve puzzles and don’t pick up a weapon? But if you don't have a shotgun in your hands, finding yourself face to face with monsters is much scarier. You will have to run away from any enemy, hastily confusing similar doors and corridors, and at some point it will seem that there is no escape from the disgusting creatures.

2. Silent Hill

The series of “horror films” by the Japanese company Konami has won the hearts and spoiled the nerves of millions of fans around the world. The games take place in the town of Silent Hill, which lives outside of space, time and the laws of physics: in it, all the hidden fears of a person become reality and take on grotesque and very frightening forms. We take a piece of pipe, a flashlight, a radio that warns with the noise of interference about the presence of the supernatural - and fearlessly rush to complete the plot tasks. Still fearless... because very soon, after solving a couple of puzzles with hanged corpses and running from the Pyramid Head Monster, courage will quickly scatter into ashes in the wind.

Pyramid Head

3. SCP: Containment breach

First there was the online encyclopedia “SCP Foundation” (“Special Containment Conditions”) - a secret Foundation of all kinds of anomalies. Half comic, half creepy census of non-existent objects, creatures and phenomena of which only imagination is capable. Several indie games based on the activities of the Foundation are the work of ardent fans of the project, so the atmosphere of the secret organization and its internal routine is conveyed with a bang. It’s easy to guess that a breakthrough in security systems will not end well... You’ll have to run through the tangled corridors of the Foundation without weapons, maps and hope of salvation, because all the worst and most dangerous objects have escaped from their dungeons and are eager to meet. Take, for example, object 173, Sculpture, in which you are strictly forbidden to blink. By the way, the blink desire indicator is an important detail of the game interface.

4. Dead Space

Games about zombies are already boring, and shooters with horror elements won’t surprise anyone. But the Dead Space series is a story about how difficult it is to fight the newly emerged race of unkillable living dead in the conditions space station. And the conditions are not the same, and the zombies are unusual: necromorphs, unlike their dead earthly counterparts, acquired a large number of extra limbs and acquired their own specializations. The second game in the series generally begins with the main character, wrapped in a straitjacket, forced to flee from a horde of angry necromorphs throughout the station, slowly crawling over numerous obstacles. And no mercy towards nerve cells player!

5. Slender: The Eight Pages

When talking about scary games, it is impossible to remain silent about the Thin Man. As in the story with SCP, first there was a horror story, and then the Internet fell in love with Slender so much that craftsmen created an indie game about him, which is rightfully considered one of the scariest in the last few years. The plot is simple: main character, taking a video camera, wanders through the dark forest and from time to time discovers notes from children hiding from the Thin Man. The player's task is to find all 8 notes and not die. No weapons, no equipment, the simplest controls only involve moving in the four directions of the world, and the heroine often gets tired and takes a breathless step. But the more notes the heroine collects, the greater the opportunity to meet the Thin Man, who appears literally out of nowhere, and to die, it is enough to let him come within a couple of steps...

6. The Suffering

A prison is an unpleasant place in all respects, and a prison built on the site of torture dungeons does not bode well by its very existence. The main character is convicted of murdering his own family and, in exile on a prison island, discovers that the place of his imprisonment is simply teeming with the very material ghosts of souls who were once tortured here. Monsters are mutilated by game designers with love and imagination, each of them personifies the way in which it was killed. An interesting detail of the gameplay: killings make the hero angrier and angrier, and in the end, when the rage scale is filled, the character himself temporarily becomes a monster, tearing apart the enemy with his bare hands - not without side effects, of course.

7. F.E.A.R.

Dead girl, torment, anger and aggression, psychic abilities, other worlds, cruel scientists, secret military services - all in one bottle! The plot of the game revolves around a girl with enormous telepathic power and placed in an artificial coma, but the player will only be able to understand what is really happening and who all these people are at the end of the game, no matter which of the eleven endings he gets. The game delights with frightening interiors, “smart” opponents and frequent hallucinations of the main character, which are often indistinguishable from reality and are quite confusing. Such “arrivals” not only slightly change the gameplay, but also allow you to find out the details of a very creepy and confusing story.

8. BioShock

It's hard to call BioShock a horror game, but out of the entire series, the first game was definitely scary. Underwater city Delight, half-flooded, inhabited by mutant drug addicts, keeps such secrets that it would be better for the main character not to appear there, even if he ended up there as a result of a plane crash. Even though Bioshock is first and foremost a great first-person shooter, and the story, while frightening, would not be suitable for a horror film, the attention to detail of the designers and writers is sometimes so concentrated that it makes you wince. What's it worth? detailed scene killing a man with a golf club, shown in first person!

#5. BioShock

Theme and meaning of the game Doom 3 not much different from Dead Space 3, except that the graphics are simpler. #7. Condemned 2: Bloodshot

In this creepy game you will have to play the role of a detective, strashno.com, who is gradually going crazy, because... his life had not been a piece of cake before, but now... Hallucinations and visions can only be removed with alcohol, which the player will have to do very often. Friends become enemies and scary pictures, once seen at a crime scene, do not leave your mind. In the game Condemned 2: Bloodshot Even the most ordinary stick is a weapon, although at some points you will have to fight hand-to-hand. The game is definitely not for impressionable girls.

#8. Dead Rising 3

Another scary game released in 2013. Fans of films about the walking dead and other zombie apocalypses will definitely like it. As you may have guessed, according to the plot in the world Dead Rising 3 Only a small group of people survived, and the rest turned into bloodthirsty monsters. But the game is not so much scary as it is ironic and mocking, the essence of which strashno.com is to mow down as many zombies as possible in all sorts of exotic ways, using not so much weapons as improvised materials. For example, you can use a board, umbrella or electric drill. The game is not for everyone, but the graphics are excellent.

#10. Slender: The Eight Pages

On last place on our list of the scariest games is the game Slender: Eight pages with the participation of the beloved Thin Man. Created based on a popular children's horror story, the game is quite creepy, albeit very simple. The events take place in the forest, where the main character has to find eight notes that children left in their attempts to elude Slenderman. And the closer you get to the last note, the higher the likelihood of meeting Slenderman face to face...

This concludes our review of the scariest games. Didn't find your favorite game on the list? Please write about it in the comments.

Remember how in childhood we told our friends scary stories? We liked to give free rein to our imagination, which drew various frightening pictures, we liked to believe that there were plenty of werewolves, vampires, ghosts around, and we, as true heroes, could show that we were not afraid of anything.

Years have passed, but your preferences have not changed?

Then we offer you TOP scariest games, which will make your blood run cold!

Penumbra opens our top ten horror games.

Its creators tried very hard to fill the toy with a horror atmosphere, so that every minute spent in it would cause fear. Before the Penumbra series, the developer company had already released a horror game Amnesia, which also became popular. The games are similar to each other: they have almost the same mechanics, in which a first-person view of all incidents opens, in both you can throw objects from the environment, and you also have the opportunity to jump in horror on your personal chair.

The game Penumbra has a fascinating plot that tells about a guy named Philip. His father disappeared, and after some time he was declared dead. Philip doesn't believe this and decides to find dad himself. Attempts to find the missing man led to a visit to abandoned mining tunnels located in Greenland. Philip, without hesitation, climbs into them, but on the way the ladder breaks. From this moment the worst begins.

The game has many references to legendary toys like Half-Life.

The game series consists of three parts that are interconnected. So, if you're not afraid, start going through them all.

It would seem that what could be scary about stairs? However, the start of this toy can be considered a real simulator of descent along them. As soon as the game starts, you have to walk down the steps for about 10 minutes, imagining all sorts of horrors that might await you where you are going.

And that seems to be it. But that was not the case. There really can be a lot of interesting things hiding in the dark, so be prepared. And be sure to try the game SCP 087 B, in which you have to wander around some building, where dangerous creatures will be waiting around.

There is one feature in the game that will not leave you indifferent: your blink indicator. That is, you can just stand and look at the creature that you meet. And then you blink - and that’s it, consider yourself already dead. So the best thing is not to blink, not to turn away, but to constantly act.

8. Slender

Slender - scary man in a funeral suit

On a dark, dark planet, in a dark, dark country, near a dark, dark city there was... A forest. Yes, remember this horror story? So, netizens came out to new level by creating your own horror movie. A bunch of stories about the mysterious Slenderman circulated from forum to forum. According to legend, Slender is a very tall, thin, even thin, man with long arms who wears a funeral suit. All he does is wander around the forest and steal people.

This may not be the scariest game in the world, but still, when you find yourself in the middle of a forest at night, surrounded by only trees, a shiver will still run through your body. According to the plot, you are a policewoman named Kate, who is obliged to investigate what happened to the children who suddenly began to disappear.

The main essence of the game is to search for seven pieces of paper on which warnings, drawings, etc. will be depicted in clumsy handwriting. You need to try not to catch the eye of Slender, because he will grab you. You don't have a weapon, so if anything happens, run.

7. Doom 3

Doom 3

The third Doom has earned its place of honor among the scariest games. This is already a kind of legend, a cult among lovers of scarecrows.

The Doom series of games has a similar plot from part to part. And the third was no exception: again a base on Mars, again creatures that crawled out of hell itself and decided to enslave or destroy everything around. In principle, nothing surprising or unusual, but this game has already made a name for itself thanks to its plot.

The most valuable thing Doom can give us is a start. You walk around the Martian base, discuss something with colleagues, everything, as they say, in the style of “nothing foreshadowed trouble.” However, as soon as you walk a couple more minutes, absolute horror begins: everything changes at lightning speed, hellish creatures are crawling out from somewhere, and you, do what you want, but survive.

And yes, do not stop for a second and do not stop shooting, otherwise you will very quickly become the prey of demons!

6.

Have you ever wondered about the possibility that terrible experiments are being carried out on people who cannot resist? The plot of this game begins with the fact that the main character receives a note. It says that in a certain hospital for mentally ill people, terrible experiments are being carried out on those who are undergoing treatment.

The best thing about the scariest games is that main character does not remain an outside observer. This is no exception, so we immediately rush into the thick of things and head to the hospital. Why at night and without taking a weapon? It's just that we are not a model of prudence in this case, and we took the camera - thank you for that. Arriving at the hospital, a sea of blood, corpses, dismemberment, etc. awaits us. In short, all fans of horror games.

The game has a unique feature: using a video camera, you can activate night mode and look at everything that is hidden in the darkness with “owl” eyes. There are also batteries for the camera lying around the room.

The most terrible games on PC also include shooters in their collection, which Japanese developers have been poring over. So you shouldn’t be surprised that the main character here is a girl who looks like a dog. The game was released in 2005, initially planned to be released only on PC. However, users liked the story about the main character so much that the game soon appeared on consoles.

The main character is a black-haired ghost girl who wants revenge. Not here open world, which, in principle, reduces interest in the game. However, considering that the genre of the game is a shooter, everything returns to normal.

The TOP of the scariest games would not be complete without Frictional Games - we have already described their creation “Penumbra”. Now it's time to talk about Amnesia. This game truly deserves its place in the Scariest PC Games category.

The character that will be discussed in the story is a guy named Daniel. One day there were no signs of trouble. The hero woke up, opened his eyes and... Found himself in the middle of an empty fortress! Everything would be fine, but he can’t remember absolutely anything. One thing that haunts him is the realization that he is being hunted. And the hunters, in this case, are terrible creatures who want to devour him.

This atmospheric horror film very well conveys the feeling of defenselessness before fate. There are no weapons here. You can only use what comes to hand.

But if you are tired of trivial stories about empty buildings, cemeteries, forests, etc., we can offer you a game about outer space. It would seem, what are the scariest games that can tell about stars and planets? However, Dead Space took a new look at travel in a romantic setting. It turns out that scary aliens, Necromorphs, have infiltrated your spaceship.

Do you think that by putting a couple of charges into the heads of alien creatures, you will be able to get rid of them? No matter how it is! They do not have organs that are vital. So you have to tear the creature apart piece by piece - that’s the only way it will die.

This horror game found its audience, so the developers rushed to make two more parts.

Evolution does not pass you by: the scariest games on PC must evolve to delight their fans.

Thus, the Resident Evil series of games has progressed significantly over the 16 years of its existence: at first it was a survival horror, and now it slightly resembles a horror shooter. All to ensure that the game meets the requirements of the modern gamer.

This game deserves the title of one of the scariest.

And finally, we get to the icing on our cake. The scariest game in the world is Silent Hill. Based on its plot, two films of the same name were made, there are many clones, but no one has yet managed to jump over the peak that the original Silent Hill set.

First of all, Silent Hill is known for its atmosphere. The game's heroes find themselves in mysterious and mystical situations that keep them in constant suspense.

Thanks to the foggy city in which the action takes place, you are constantly in anticipation of something terrifying. Just about, now, in a second and... Nothing... This is approximately how it all happens. You constantly expect to be attacked, but when this does not happen, the next expectation is even more depressing.

However, play and see for yourself.
