Open world games in the city. Open world games on PC

It's hard to find a gamer who will say that games with small worlds are better than games with large ones. As a rule, the opposite happens: everyone wants more, and the more, the better. That's because big world, as a rule, is associated with freedom, and it is difficult to imagine anything more valuable in video games than freedom. So the big world is an interesting thing. And right now I will tell you about ten not very old games, whose worlds were the largest. And I bet it won't turn out to be what you think.

10th place. Skyrim: The Special Edition (39 km?).

Let's come with trump cards! Probably, when it came to the open world, many immediately remembered Skyrim, but, as it turned out, the world of this game is not so big. The game is many years old, but, nevertheless, at one time its icy expanses caused delight. And even now, to put it mildly, they do not seem small. For example, the map of another Bethesda game, Fallout 4, has an area of only 15 square kilometers, despite the difference of many years. However, it is worth adding that these same 39 km of Skyrim did not include dungeons. It seems difficult to count them, but if we added them, then perhaps the project would rise higher. Well, you also need to take into account that in this case we are talking about a Special Edition with all its additions.

9th place. Far Cry 4 (45 km?).

Ubisoft's love for games with open worlds showed immediately. A first-person shooter, and with such a world, you know, it’s worth a lot. Usually, when we say “first-person shooter,” we mean something in the hallway. But that's not the case here. There is a big, seamless, multi-level world here. There are no special caves here, but even without them it turned out pretty well. We do not have exact data on the area of the world of Far Cry 3, but, as reported from the field, the world of the third part turned out to be noticeably smaller.

8th place. Mad Max (50 km?).

If you find fault, you can repeat after the developers who insisted that the world of Mad Max is endless. But we know that this is not so. As soon as you go beyond the map area, an inscription appears on the entire screen saying that this is a wild wasteland, and there is absolutely nothing for you to do here. And, indeed, there was nothing to do, because in this very wasteland there was nothing useful at all. As for the world, the situation here is as follows: the world does not open immediately. From the first minutes you can’t get behind the wheel and drive it diagonally. The maps open in small areas, and therefore do not make a special impression, and do not amaze with their scale. However, the world, due to the “automobile” nature of the game, is still large.

7th place. The Witcher 3 (52 km?).

The story with the area of the game world of the third Witcher is as follows. At the pre-release stage, the developers announced 139 square kilometers. We were still counting then, and were surprised that, supposedly, this was three times more than Skyrim. But there is one nuance: the developers calculated the area of the entire map, with seas, mountains that you can’t climb, and all the buildings that you can’t go into. But, in general, the area of the playable map is a little more than fifty square kilometers, and this is with the addition of Blood and Wine. Without it, the result is something around forty. So, as we see, the best, in my personal opinion, open world, turned out to be not at all as big as it seemed, because we still have six whole games ahead of us.

6th place. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild(74 km?)

I would love to tell you about the area of Dragon Age: Inquisition, but, unfortunately, I don’t have the information. So get what I own. The world of the new Zelda is really big. There is room to turn around here, but, as in the Inquisition, density of content had to be sacrificed for space. The map, needless to say, is empty and monotonous. You run through forests and steppes, and only animals jumping up on the way diversify the transitions between interesting, truly game-like locations. But the world is really big, and if it weren’t for the mini-map, you could easily get lost in it, endlessly winding through the hills and ravines.

5th place. Grand Theft Auto V (80 km?).

I wanted to put on Watch Dogs 2, but in the genre of urban action games with an open world, latest GTA there are no competitors, and there won't be until Cyberpunk 2077 comes out. So, what do we have? And we have a huge map, the world of which is twice as large as the world of Skyrim and 5 times larger than the world of Fallout 4. So it turns out that in Skyrim there are huge spaces and cities, in Fallout, it’s like, like, a Wasteland, but here there is only one city with the surrounding area, and such a scale. But, you need to take into account the following: this area was calculated taking into account the territory over which you can fly by plane. With the same success, the sea world of the third Witcher could be calculated, thanks to which the game about the adventures of Geralt of Rivia would be noticeably higher.

4th place. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag (100 km?).

Suddenly? Quite. And I will say more: in general, the world of the game is about 250 square kilometers, but, as you probably already understood, we are talking about the expanses of the sea, through which it is proposed to sail on ships. If we discard them, then there are about a hundred kilometers of land left on which to run. It’s not for nothing that many fans of this pseudo-historical series consider Black Flag to be the best part. The best, not the best, but the world in it is very large, and perhaps even larger than the world of Assassin's Creed: Unity. However, the record, it seems, will not stand for long, because Ubisoft will soon release a new part about Egypt. And, there, where there is Egypt, there is a desert, and where there is a desert, there is a minimum of content, which means you can create a huge world. Well, if you also remember that there will be a Mediterranean Sea, along which, supposedly, it will be possible to sail to Greece, then imagine. I can’t decide on the scale of the new Assassin’s Creed.

3rd place. Xenoblade Chronicles X (340 km?).

You probably didn't expect to see this game here. Another action game for Nintendo consoles with huge world. But here you also need to understand: the world, although big, is empty. In addition, the method of movement in it seems to be the most high-tech in our entire hit parade. It’s one thing to run on foot, ride horses, or even drive cars, and quite another to travel on futuristic, hovercraft. In general, the world is big, but - there is an opinion - it is unlikely that fans will distinguish their geographical location from screenshots; think about it, someone would conduct such an experiment. There are no memorable places on the map, but 340 square kilometers is no joke either.

2nd place. Just Cause 3 (370 km?).

And another game that you were unlikely to expect, and if you did, it was clearly not in this place. So what do we get? It turns out that we have a total of 1000 square kilometers of the map as a whole, but strictly game, with land, and without the useless ocean, almost three times less. However, it is very significant. For example, if the entire world of Fallout 4 is crossed diagonally on foot in 40 minutes, then the world of Just Because 3 is crossed in 8 hours. A great result that will not be easy to overcome. True, as practice shows, the size of the world is not always a guarantee high quality games, and this particular action game did not perform as optimists expected: there was too much monotony, but the world was really huge.

1st place. Ghost Recon Wildlands – (400 km?).

Well, the winner of our hit parade, in which games were measured by size, is the latest Ubisoft game, which was initially positioned as an open-world game. The world here is really huge. And all thanks to Bolivia - a country where there are many, many wild drug dealers and deserts. And where there is a desert, there is no need to be shy in scale. It is noteworthy that the area of real Bolivia is slightly more than a million square kilometers. Those. Almost half of the entire state fit in here. This is a serious result, especially since there is almost no water here. Everywhere there is one continuous land on which you can run. What can we say if crossing the entire map by plane takes about 8 minutes. Whether there were guys who covered this map on foot is unknown to science.

This is how we got the TOP chick. Here, of course, you need to take into account that many games whose worlds could take their rightful place are not included here. And all because the data on their area is unknown to anyone. Well, there are also games with a procedurally generated world, such as No Man’s Sky, but this is a slightly different story, so we won’t include them here. And you, if you know about games whose worlds are larger, and even know their area, then, of course, write about it in the comments. Well, that's all. Play only good games, and let no one leave beaten.

Most games can be divided into linear and open. The second ones are longer, more varied and more addictive, especially if there are well-developed locations. But the developers need to convince you that the world is alive - only then will you want to study it. We present ten such games.

Red Dead Redemption

This is a more adult Grand Theft Auto. Adult not in the sense that there is more blood, shooting and girls greedy for the sound of coins. It's about the world and the story being told. GTA is pure satire, which sometimes includes drama, albeit quite successfully. Red Dead Redemption is completely different. Cowboy John Marston, who caused trouble in his youth, must help important officials in capturing his former gang comrades, otherwise his family will literally be in trouble.

The hero, who has given up crime, goes against old acquaintances and, in a sense, against himself. At the same time, the world around is changing: progress is progressing, cars are appearing that leave no chance for horses, and Marston realizes that the era of the Wild West will soon end, and he does not know and does not want any other life. The story is skillfully diluted with comical characters (like a completely insane gravedigger) and funny situations.

Red Dead Redemption features large area, which has a variety of activities: non-story mini-stories, side quests, gambling, interesting duels - the Wild West is dangerous, but too good not to explore. The sequel is expected to be released this fall.

Far Cry

The series has experienced a rise, a fall and another rise. After the unexpectedly high-quality first part, fairly passable console versions followed, and then the terrible Far Cry 2 came out. It was a ready-made guide on “How not to make an open world”: the same type of tasks, a minimum of random events, boring roadblocks. It was time to bury the series.

Who would have thought that after this a fantastically cool third part would appear. Tropical island, stunning villain Vaas and spectacular leader of the Citra tribe, hurricane missions with choice, interesting idea with animal hunting - Ubisoft was on a roll. Even Far Cry 4, which only moved the action to the Himalayas without offering anything new, also went off with a bang.

Then came a sharp change in concept: Far Cry Primal is dedicated to primeval time. The step is controversial, but in general it turned out well - albeit not so spectacular, but extremely original. Ubisoft has learned to fill its worlds with interesting events, which it proved again in Watch Dogs 2.

Saints Row

Open-world action games are sometimes casually referred to as "GTA clones." To avoid such comparisons, Volition has chosen its own path. Realizing that it would not be possible to surpass Rockstar in the level of production and elaboration of the world, the developers set out to make the most trashy action movie possible. Oddly enough, the idea turned out to be successful.

Saints Row is GTA gone crazy. Seriously, if you suddenly think that the height of madness is to dress up in a funny costume, throw a grenade at cars standing at a traffic light, and shoot the arriving policemen with a machine gun, then just launch the action game from Volition. Take the hero of Saints Row, for example. He has come a long way - from the leader of a street gang to the President of the United States.

In the fourth part of the game, an alien invasion occurs. Who, if not the head of state elected by the people, should be the first to protect his population? Moreover, there is no need to persuade him: the fighter, seasoned by courtyard showdowns, declares war on the aliens. The hero flies over the city, runs at incredible speed, incinerates and freezes enemies. This is trash in in a good way, like Robert Rodriguez's Machete. You just need to not take what is happening seriously.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted

In racing, an open world is often not needed: there is practically nothing to do between competitions. One of the few exceptions is NFS: Most Wanted. Freedom of movement was first introduced in Underground 2, but the concept is best presented in the next game.

The project is dedicated to street racing - it was still fashionable back then. The hero needs to be at the top of the list of the best street racers in the sunny city of Rockport. Starting with something like a VW Golf GTI, the character rose higher and higher. At the end of the game, Lamborghinis and other exotics were revealed. At the same time, the BMW M3 GTR was chosen as the car of the best racer; it also appears on the cover of the game. It turned out funny: the hero drives the most powerful supercars, but dreams of defeating an upstart in some kind of BMW.

Most Wanted is jam-packed with events: races against the clock, setting the maximum speed on the radar, sprints, circuit races, boss battles, lengthy police chases - not every open-world action game offers such variety.

Mafia

Mafia 3, released in the fall of 2016, was a complete failure: weak graphics, dead atmosphere and complete monotony of missions. If publisher 2K Games plans a new part, then the developers will have to try hard to restore trust in the franchise. But once upon a time everything was different.

Mafia: City of the Lost Heaven was released the same year as the PC version of GTA 3. The competition was fierce. The world of Rockstar's action was more alive, passers-by responded better to the player's intervention in their usual way of life. Mafia, from little-known Czechs from Illusion Softworks, offered a special atmosphere and well-developed characters.

Taxi driver Tommy Angelo accidentally received a ticket to the world of the mafia: he helped serious people escape and they offered to help him in the future. The hero enters a new world for himself and carries out tasks for major authorities. It's the 30s of the 20th century, men in hats drive huge cars and talk about loyalty to a mafia family. The second part took us to the middle of the last century. The atmosphere had changed, but the game was still addictive, although it was too short.

The Witcher

RPG is a genre for which an open world is almost mandatory. Complete freedom of action sometimes turns into total boredom: nothing happens in the game, the quests are already boring. The Polish Witcher series was spared the troubles of role-playing projects. A routine walk from one village to another can lead to a new investigation involving an ancient curse, star-crossed lovers, local drunks, ghosts, witches and the village elder - sometimes all at once.

The Witcher Geralt is a medieval freelancer and a complete parasite. He doesn’t have a permanent source of income, he’s not a fool to drink, party and spend time playing dice, he works from time to time, as orders appear. True, it would be difficult for tax collectors to get a refund from him in royal treasury, and even more difficult - to be sent to forced labor. The hero wields a sword better than any person, fights well with his fists, and knows how to approach magical creatures.

The world of the third game turned out to be especially large and alive. Adventures happen at every turn. Having climbed into the thick of the forest, you will find a hermit's hut, wander into a gateway - you will have to save an inept guard from bandits, and so on all the time. The Witcher constantly calling you somewhere, and you just need to turn off the path.

Fallout

The game was not the first RPG in a post-apocalyptic setting. Nine years before the release of the debut part, Wasteland was released, which has now been revived. But it was Fallout that gained the greatest fame and popularity.

Freedom of action is elevated to absolute: no one cares what you do. More and more new quests appear, characters entice you with intriguing stories, but you can simply walk off into the sunset towards your destiny. Fallout is imbued with the spirit of adventurism - you want to explore this world in detail, and it’s nice that there are many secrets hidden in it.

Despite the consequences nuclear war, the world of Fallout lives on. With complete freedom, you won’t be bored - events, like in The Witcher, will appear on their own.

The Elder Scrolls

The action changes from part to part: the central region of the world of Tamriel - Cyrodiil - is shown in TES IV: Oblivion, we find ourselves in northern Skyrim in TES V, we walk through the province of Morrowind in the third numbered game, and so on. All locations are terribly interesting to explore.

In The Elder Scrolls a lot of shortcomings: tasks of the same type, strange role-playing system. Let's say, nothing prevents a warrior character from undergoing training at the Guild of Mages - this is approximately how a humanities student will receive a physics and mathematics diploma. And so much can be said about balance: about the automatic increase in enemy levels relative to your hero (see Oblivion), and about killing a dragon with one arrow (see Skyrim).

Dark Souls is a computer game in the action-RPG genre with open world. The basis of the gameplay is the exploration of the game world in conditions of almost constant danger. The influence of story on the gameplay in Dark Souls is minimal. Events and their meaning are often implied rather than explained or shown directly, leaving the player to interpret and speculate on what is happening. Most of the plot and information about the world is presented through dialogue with various characters, through descriptions of objects, or in short cast scenes. The player must find and process all the information he needs himself.

From this moment on, your task is to survive at any cost. Jason will be drawn into a bloody war between pirates and local rebels, in which blood, lead and drugs flow like a river. Some psychopaths fight with others, and soon the main character is no longer able to distinguish an opium dream from an insane reality. The crazy island drives everyone who sets foot on its shores crazy and you have to be crazy to stay here. Are you out of your mind?
