Plot description

The real scourge of every anime ongoing are fillers - additional episodes that have practically nothing to do with the main plot of the canon. They can be quite interesting or, on the contrary, absolutely stupid and inappropriate, sometimes the tension of the plot is so obvious that even the most devoted anime fans begin to be indignant. However, in the Naruto anime, fillers created a pleasant addition to the description of an already beloved world. the mangaka who created the story about Naruto has nothing to do with the filler series, but this does not stop the audience from loving them, especially now that the story has successfully ended.

Are Naruto fillers worth watching?

The opinions of Naruto lovers regarding fillers are divided into two approximately equal parts. Fans of the canon had a very negative attitude towards the animators’ desire to churn out episodes, guided by some kind of their own fantasies. Criticism took on a particularly harsh tone if the next filler series was distinguished by deliberately careless drawing. An experienced eye will always notice serious errors in the anatomy of the characters, and attempts by the animators to save on backgrounds and dynamics. However, in the Naruto anime, fillers did not always cause negativity; there were also successful plots.

You can be a fan of the canon and watch only those episodes that correspond to some chapters of the manga. This will significantly shorten the anime, almost in half. The peculiarity of “Naruto” is that the created world is undeniably attractive, even in isolation from the canonical plot of the manga. It's no wonder fans want more.

"Naruto": list of fillers

The first filler appears at the very end of the first season, this is episode No. 26. According to the basic laws of ongoing releases, the first seasons always go without fillers - there is simply no need for them, because there are still enough manga chapters ahead.
There are only three fillers in the fourth season - episodes No. 97, No. 99 and a humorous omake episode No. 101.
The fifth season of Naruto is fully complemented by fillers. This another story about adventures in the Land of Tea - 5 episodes in a row.
The sixth season of twenty-nine episodes consists almost entirely of filler, only the first five episodes correspond to canon, all other stories from No. 136 to No. 156 were invented by the writers.
The seventh, eighth and ninth seasons consist entirely of filler, and this has been a huge challenge for Naruto fans. The second part of the ongoing "Naruto Hurricane Chronicles" is full of them, and, according to fans, they have become worse than in the first part.

Fan art or canon?

Can filler episodes be considered part of the canon? This largely depends on what the viewer is generally focused on. Many have not read manga and are not eager to, since a static picture and a minimum of text is a very specific method of conveying the story itself. For fans of the Naruto anime, fillers can be considered canon.

However, it is worth remembering that Masashi Kishimoto did not write this. If you rely on the author of the story, then filler episodes can be considered the fan creation of the writers, although in fact they are not. To make fillers easier to understand, it’s worth remembering such a common phenomenon as “film adaptations based on.” Not only the Japanese know how to make a mountain out of a mountain; Western filmmakers and animators use this technique very well.

Additions to the world of Naruto

If the author creates a world really well, then the reader or viewer will want to travel through it longer than the mangaka's imagination can offer. The same thing happened with the world of Naruto. Hurricane fillers swept over the plot and created interesting additions, deviations and assumptions, and their own theories. Nevertheless, one should not consider screenwriters to be soulless businessmen who strive to churn out more episodes. This is not entirely true. In the vast majority of cases, when creating additional episodes or even seasons, the logic of the world created by Kishimoto was used.

Why do we need fillers at all?

It was necessary to do without them! This is what an avid fan of the Naruto manga thinks. The list of fillers is simply overwhelming in its volume. But would the viewer stand it if strictly new chapters were filmed? The fact is that when shooting manga, there are on average two chapters per episode. The series is published once a week, this is a truly fast-paced process that is designed to capture and hold the attention of viewers for a long time. The filmed versions of the on-going inevitably catch up with the mangaka, and soon the animators face a problem: there is nothing left to shoot, they need to take a break and wait for the mangaka to come up with and draw new chapters. But this is an unproductive approach.

As you know, demand creates supply, and in this case, it is fillers. "Naruto" (season 2 and the following) practically did without these additions only because it was the very beginning of the ongoing, but then we had to act according to the standard scheme. It is worth noting that the creators of the anime gave it their all. During the existence of ongoing, many successful filler series have been created, full-length animated films have been shot. “Naruto” did not share the fate of many ongoing series - it successfully ended both as a manga and as an anime, confidently holding a leading position in the ratings.
