At the beginning of the 20th century, the US Army still used revolvers that were significantly inferior to self-loading pistols in terms of rate of fire and accuracy of rapid fire. This situation was due to the conservatism of the American military, which relied on the reliability of revolvers, which was significantly higher than that of self-loading pistols.
In addition, at that time, the pistols most suitable for the armed forces had a caliber of no more than 9 mm, and the US Army had already gained combat experience in the Philippine Islands, where low-power 9 mm revolvers turned out to be extremely ineffective in short-term close battles with rebels armed and excellent command of edged weapons.

A temporary solution was the Colt Model 1909 revolver, which used the .45 Long Colt cartridge with a high stopping power of the bullet and was equipped with a double-action trigger mechanism. But the US Army wanted a modern self-loading pistol that was as reliable as a revolver, quick-firing, accurate, and used effective 45-caliber cartridges.

The companies Colt and Savage participated in the competition for a new self-loading pistol for the US Army. Tests began on November 10, 1910. Both pistols fired .45 ACP ammunition. These were the most advanced designs of the time. The tests began with a detailed study of the pistols. At the same time, especially great attention was paid to safety in handling weapons. The pistols were disassembled and reassembled for a time. In terms of incomplete disassembly time, Colt won, but in terms of complete disassembly time, Savage won. The Colt consisted of 64 individual parts, the Savage - of 45.
In terms of shooting accuracy, Savage was inferior to Colt. In penetration tests, the Colt penetrated more pine boards, while the Savage penetrated more oak boards. In rapid fire accuracy tests, Colt was more accurate and faster than Savage. 6,000 rounds were to be fired from both pistols. Colt turned out to be much more reliable - 11 delays versus 33.

On March 15, 1911, testing was resumed after both companies had completed improvements to their weapons. These repeated tests also revealed the significant superiority of the Browning pistol in operational reliability and durability. According to the commission's conclusion, Colt was superior to Savage in reliability, durability, ease of disassembly and shooting accuracy. In this connection, Colt weapons were recommended for further testing by the troops.
On March 29, 1911, after lengthy and numerous tests, the self-loading pistol designed by John Browning Colt M1911, also known as the Government Model, was adopted by the US Army. Since 1913, Colt M1911 began to be supplied to navy and in marines USA.

The automatic operation of the Colt M1911 pistol works according to the scheme of using recoil with a short barrel stroke. The coupling of the barrel with the bolt-casing is carried out using two lugs of the breech of the barrel and the corresponding grooves of the bolt-casing. Disengagement is carried out by lowering the barrel, using an earring, pivotally connected to the barrel and frame, during rollback. The axis of the bolt stop lever is also the lower axis of the shackle. In the front part of the bolt casing there is a removable barrel bushing that holds the muzzle of the barrel. The return spring is located under the barrel.
The trigger mechanism of the Colt M1911 pistol is hammer type, single action, with safety cocking. The trigger moves longitudinally in the pistol frame. It is connected to the sear by two symmetrical rods located on the sides of the magazine shaft in the pistol handle.

Like all self-loading pistols, the trigger design of the Colt M1911 pistol has a disconnector that prevents firing a shot when the bolt is not completely closed. On the left side of the frame there is a safety lever, a bolt stop lever and a magazine latch.

At the rear of the Colt M1911 pistol grip there is an automatic grip safety lever that blocks the trigger pull and turns off only when the grip is grasped. The straight rear surface of the lower part of the handle is formed by the mainspring housing. The safety lever blocks the cocked hammer and the bolt casing. Ejector closed type located inside the shutter casing. The box-shaped single-stack magazine holds 7 rounds.
Initially, Colt M1911 pistols were blued, later other types of coatings began to be used. The cheeks of the handle, the angle of inclination of which is 108°, were made of walnut wood. They were covered with a cross diamond-shaped notch, and where they were fastened with screws they had flat diamond-shaped surfaces called “diamonds”.
Initially, the production of Colt M1911 pistols was carried out at Colt factories, but soon Remington-UMC, Springfield Armory and North American Arms Co. joined in.

Today we will talk about one of the most legendary pistols in world history. It's no joke, the Colt 1911 45 caliber pistol served in service with the United States Army for almost three quarters of a century! Moreover, the model is in demand and is produced in our time, and is even used by intelligence agencies of some countries. In the entire history of this weapon, any serious modifications to its design were made only once - in 1926, when the updated Colt 1911 A1 model appeared. Since that time, changes have affected only the manufacturing technology, but not the design of the pistol. What was the reason for such popularity and durability of weapons?

History of creation

At the beginning of the twentieth century american army still used revolvers. The Philippine military campaign of 1899-1901 clearly demonstrated their archaic nature: they were low-power, had a poor rate of fire and accuracy.

However, the American military was in no hurry to rearm, primarily due to the well-established production and higher reliability of revolvers compared to automatic pistols.

In this video you will be told about the features of the Colt M1911 pistol.

However, the troops' need for more powerful .45 caliber weapons was obvious. In 1911, J. M. Browning created and patented a pistol, dubbed the Colt-Browning M1911. A few months later, the US Army was equipped with it. At first it was produced exclusively at the Colt plant, but as the needs of the troops increased, the list of manufacturing factories expanded.

The effectiveness of the new weapon was confirmed already during the First World War: a 45 caliber bullet was capable of immediately incapacitating the enemy due to its more powerful striking force. At the same time, weapons of a smaller caliber, even wounding the enemy, often did not cause significant damage to him and left a chance for a return shot.

Several changes were made to the design in 1926– at first glance, insignificant. However, as it turned out, extremely important.

  • the “tail” of the safety on the handle has become longer;
  • trigger force reduced;
  • the mainspring stop was changed;
  • the trigger travel has been reduced;
  • inclined recesses were added to the frame behind the trigger;
  • the trigger spoke and the holding hand were better separated, which increased the accuracy of the weapon;
  • the back of the handle became arched.

The updated version was called Colt M1911 A1 Government Edition. In this form it existed until the end of the Second World War. After 1945, several modifications were released: Commander, Officer's, Double Eagle and several others.

However, fundamental differences These modifications did not differ from the original version. In the mid-80s, the Colt 1911 A1 was replaced by the Beretta 92. Nevertheless, already in the 90s the pistol turned into a real cult. Its modifications are still in demand today, mainly among civilians.

Moreover, manufacturers produce both the classic version - the Colt 1911 firearm, and the Colt 1911 pneumatic. In this article we will dwell in more detail on one of these options, namely the Gletcher Colt CLT 1911.

The legislation of our country does not allow citizens to freely own firearms. Therefore, purchasing a pneumatic analogue is, in fact, the only real opportunity to experience the full power of the Colt M1911.

For lovers powerful weapons like it.

Operational and technical characteristics

Brief technical specifications are as follows:

The first thing I want to say about the Colt 1911 is how comfortable it “fits” in the hand. The ergonomics of the pistol are very good, especially considering the fact that the model is more than a century old.

It should be noted that all parts of the Colt are massive. This is an absolute plus of the model, since even with shaking fingers it will be difficult to miss.

Another feature of the M1911 is the “sliding” rather than “rocking” trigger. If you are used to a standard hook, you will have to relearn it for some time.

Overall the gun is amazingly effective. especially in close combat. Actually, it was developed for this purpose: due to large caliber and the mass of the bullet, its penetrating ability is not so great, but the force of impact upon impact is enormous; with any, even if not the most accurate, hit on the enemy, the latter is often knocked down, drops the weapon, or receives such damage that he cannot resist.

The only drawback in the ergonomics of the model can manifest itself in a small or female palm– due to its size, holding it in such a palm will not be so easy.

Disassembly and cleaning

First, the magazine is removed. We make sure that the chamber is empty. Next, remove the bolt plug and remove the bolt.

Then we first remove the return spring, and after it the barrel and the damper spring (it is only available in the pneumatic version of the pistol). Next, we’ll look at how to completely disassemble a Colt 1911 pneumatic.

Complete disassembly requires a flathead and Phillips screwdriver, as well as a set of hex keys. It is better to carry out further actions according to the instructions for the gun. We remove the impact mechanism from the bolt and disassemble it.

We remove the barrel from the false barrel (since the caliber of an air pistol is smaller than a combat pistol, but the model completely imitates the original, the designers made exactly this decision - a 4.5 mm caliber barrel is inserted inside the false barrel).

Lubrication should be done only with special weapon oils.

When the lubricant has already been applied to all parts of the gun, it is recommended to leave them for several hours without wiping. This is done so that the dirt “dissolves” a little in the oil and the surfaces are cleaned more thoroughly. Cleaning is done by wiping all lubricated surfaces with a cloth.

After cleaning, gun oil is reapplied in small quantities. on all contact surfaces and moving parts.

Assembly is carried out in reverse order. Wearing rules air guns look .

Preparation for use

The first IPSC president, Colonel D. Cooper, recommended carrying the Colt M1911 with the safety on, with the hammer cocked and a round in the chamber. That. compensates for the insufficient speed of using weapons with a single-action trigger.

However, this advice only applies to the firearm model. You should absolutely not carry a Colt pneumatic with a punctured cylinder for more than an hour. Because of high pressure In a cylinder, sealing gaskets can quickly become unusable.

When removing the pistol from the holster, try to wrap your palm as tightly as possible around the handle. If this is not done, the pistol may not be removed from the handle safety and may not fire at right moment. Also be aware that large protruding parts of the gun may get caught on clothing or a holster.

When piercing the balloon, do it carefully and do not overdo it. After inserting the cylinder, simply tighten the clamping screw slightly. When hissing appears, do not apply much force, but only tighten the screw a little.

Advantages and Disadvantages

The main advantages of the model are its reliability, low cost and ease of use. It was these two qualities that ensured such durability for the Colt M1911.

The pistol is not demanding in terms of maintenance, fits well in the hand, and at the same time has excellent accuracy and power. The model's capabilities are best revealed in close combat, although when shooting at 30-40 meters you shouldn’t discount the Colt.

The popularity of the pistol is also explained by the huge number of modifications and tuned versions: only about ten different factory versions were produced.

For lovers firearms who, for one reason or another, are unable to purchase a combat version of the Colt M1911A1, created large number pneumatic analogues (including IZH 53M

Disadvantages include: heavy weight and dimensions, which may affect the ease of use of weapons by people with small hands.

In addition, the single-action trigger has long been outdated and cannot compete With modern models. However, due to its simplicity, low cost, and also due to the fact that there is nothing to break, the pistol will be in demand for a very long time.

Conclusion

In this article we looked at more than just weapons. We learned, no less, about one of the real symbols of America - such as Marlboro cigarettes or a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Colt M1911A1, without exaggeration, is a piece of the history of this country.

And, what is most surprising, despite progress and the emergence of more modern weapons, Colt is in no hurry to give up its positions. It has firmly occupied the niche of one of the most sought-after pistols for self-defense among civilians.

And if you try to describe such a popular and sought-after weapon, which is already more than a century old, in one word, then the best word would be “cult”! In the United States, the Colt M1911 is approved for use as a personal weapon and is highly valued by target shooting enthusiasts for its high accuracy.

And although this weapon is considered not without its drawbacks, which include its heavy weight and size, fairly strong recoil, small magazine capacity (7 rounds) and a single-action trigger mechanism, many shooters still choose the Colt M1911.

If you collect weapons, it would be a good idea to buy a Colt 1911 model in our store.

Why is the MMG Colt 1911 interesting? Design Features

It’s worth buying a Colt model to study the design features of this pistol. For the M1911 model:

  • the barrel is connected to the frame by means of a swinging earring located under its breech and the transverse rod of the frame;
  • The barrel is locked using two protrusions and bolt grooves located on it, located in front of the window for removing cartridges;
  • the return spring is located under the barrel, the combat spring is in the handle;
  • trigger with an open single-action trigger;
  • there are two safeties - automatic (located behind the handle and turns off when you put your hand around it) and non-automatic (located on the frame, blocks the bolt and trigger);

"Colt 1911" is the most beloved and revered weapon of more than one generation of Americans. It is considered the symbol of the country. Everyone, from ordinary housewives to police officers and bandits, preferred it to other brands of weapons. Simple, reliable with excellent stopping power, it gives a feeling of security and confidence. The cult of weapons in America has its own idol - the Colt 1911.

Story

The American company Colt acquired several patents for the design of automatic self-loading pistols in 1896. Among the first samples created was the Colt Auto Pistol M 1900. It was chambered for the 38 caliber cartridge.

"Colt 1911" (see photo in the text) was developed on its basis under and received its official name: “Government model” - M1911 Government. The year of manufacture of the pistol - 1911 - became its designation. At the same time, it was adopted for long-term service by the American Army and Navy. With various modifications, improvements and changes, it remained in service with the country for almost eighty years.

Armament of armies

"Colt" was and is in service with the armies and intelligence services of many countries. For one reason or another, these weapons ended up in various parts of the world.

Exploiting countries:

  • The United States of America adopted the pistol back in 1911. Officially removed in 1985, but some military personnel, police and private security agencies use it to this day.
  • Estonia received 1,500 Colts under the program military assistance in 1997.
  • England was provided with these pistols during the Second World War under the Lend-Lease program (US government program for the supply of weapons to the allies).
  • Norway adopted it into service in 1913.
  • The USSR, like England, received Colt thanks to the Lend-Lease program during the forties war years.
  • Japan accepted the Colt into service with the Self-Defense Forces after the end of the war, in 1945.
  • Haiti. The country's national police received a batch of pistols from the United States in 1997.
  • Salvador. Through military assistance in the eighties of the twentieth century, 225 weapons were supplied from America.
  • South Vietnam used Colts in its army until 1975.

Traumatic Colt

Everything available traumatic weapon can be conditionally divided into two groups: either converted from a combat one, or manufactured similarly to combat models. How more famous brand pistol or revolver, the more popular the traumatic option.

After the end of the war (World War II), the production of weapons intended for self-defense of the population was organized in Germany. The Erma-Werke company (Erfurt) produced pocket analogues of well-known brands at that time. One of the models was very similar in appearance to the American Colt.

Nowadays, a traumatic pistol was created on its basis - the Erma-459R model. This is what they call it - the traumatic "Colt 1911" - among amateurs. But for specialists this is far from the case. Too many differences, even external ones, do not allow him to give such a definition. The “stuffing” of the pistol is very far from the original and has nothing in common with it. IN pure form there is no traumatic Colt.

Pneumatic model

All weapons from trademark Gletcher - excellent quality. Gunsmiths know and love their craft. Steady demand for the company's products ensures that all types of pistols and revolvers are guaranteed for a period of 18 months (from the date of purchase) and are well supplied service. It can be obtained anywhere in the world.

The Colt 1911 Glacier air pistol is almost impossible to distinguish from the military original. The accuracy of the model is amazing, and the unique moving shutter system provides a very realistic shooting sensation. Rate of fire, high accuracy combined with durability of the models - these are the advantages for which Gletcher brand weapons are valued.

The Colt Glacier 1911, like the original, is easy and comfortable to hold in the hand, despite its massiveness. The pistol is made of high-quality metal alloy, there are plastic linings on the handle. It contains a full-size magazine, and a cylinder is also inserted there. The Colt 1911 air pistol is equipped with an original two-safety system. It can be carried military style when there is a cartridge in the chamber. The automatic safety on the frame will prevent an accidental shot.

Pistol characteristics:

  • magazine for 19 charges;
  • bullet speed (initial) - 100 meters per second;
  • fuses: semi-automatic and automatic;
  • USM - single;
  • bore - smooth;
  • total length - 205 mm;
  • barrel - 96 mm;
  • weight - 900 grams;
  • CO 2 cylinder, volume - 12 grams (up to 70 shots);
  • and brand - Taiwan, Gletcher.

Advantages and disadvantages of the pneumatic model

"Colt 1911" pneumatic has its advantages:

  • replicates a combat pistol as accurately as possible;
  • the movable shutter system (blowback) enhances the realistic effect of the Colt;
  • high range aimed shooting- confident 20 meters;
  • Firing using pre-cocking is possible (this is provided by the USM type).

Disadvantages of the model:

  • possible jamming when firing;
  • if the valve moves too freely, balls may enter the gas engine;
  • It is better to carry a pistol in a holster: if you suddenly take the weapon out of your pocket, it can get caught on your clothes.

Even though the pistol is pneumatic, it is subject to certain rules use:

  • you can shoot from it only in places equipped for this purpose: at shooting ranges, in shooting ranges, at shooting and hunting stands or in an area that is surrounded by a fence and there is a guarantee that when fired the bullet will not leave its boundaries;
  • transport and carry a pneumatic Colt in all populated areas Only possible in a sheathed state.

The price for such pneumatics is serious, it can reach 300 US dollars.

Application

The Colt 1911 is still in service in some countries around the world today. To separate military units special purpose They didn’t give up on a pistol that had been tested for reliability for decades.

It is in steady demand among civilian population not only in America, but also in European countries. Gun enthusiasts transform Colts into works of art. Tuning can be so original and unexpected that it’s fit to be exhibited in a museum.

Cooled pistol Colt 1911 (Colt 1911, Kurs-S)

A distilled version of the legendary American Colt 1911 pistol. The model was designed by John Browning in 1908 and is still perhaps the most recognizable pistol in the entire world.

The cooled 1911 CO pistol is made from an NP29 9x19mm combat sporting pistol. Its body is made of metal, the outer parts of which are coated with oxidation, which perfectly protects the material from corrosion. Model length is 218 mm, width 33.5 mm and height 137 mm. The weight of the pistol without cartridges is 1.15 kg .

The ammunition used to simulate a pistol shot is cartridge 10x24 mm. The pistol magazine holds up to 8 rounds. Removing cartridges during shooting occurs in the same way as with its combat counterpart.

All pistol controls are preserved and perform their direct function. Thus, the model is equipped with a classic 1911 pistol safety system, which is represented by a safety lever, as well as a special button on the back of the handle, which makes working with a cooled model safe.

To avoid the possibility of firing a pistol with live ammunition, the design of the model has been changed:

  • three pins were installed in the barrel bore, as well as a bushing, which made shooting impossible hard objects;
  • the pistol's chamber was bored to fit the 10x24 cartridge;
  • the model's lugs have been removed;
  • the gun shackle was replaced with a milling groove;
  • the restrictive end of the model is equipped with a rectangular groove;
  • the barrel of the model is secured with a special pin, which prevents the pistol from being equipped with a different barrel;
  • The pistol's bolt is also pinned, making it impossible to separate the barrel from the bolt.

So, the 1911 CO pistol will be truly interesting to all firearms lovers; it will take pride of place in any, even the richest collection.
