Grinding food waste. Sink food chopper

Many housewives are faced with the problem of a disgusting smell emanating from a garbage can with food waste. Innovative equipment that helps neutralize food residues and send them through sewer pipes is becoming increasingly widespread among domestic consumers.

The operating principle of such a chopper food waste for the sink consists of processing boiled and raw: vegetables, fruits, bones, pasta, cereals and other food scraps. When the chopper blades operate, all food waste that falls into the sink drain turns into a mushy mass and is washed down the drain with a stream of water, without leaving any unpleasant odor.

Each grinder-disposer can be driven electrically and thanks to the mechanical energy of the water itself. I divide them into two types:

  1. Electronic disposer. Electric food waste shredder, built into the sink, with sufficient power and reliable operation. However, such disposers require increased compliance with safety precautions during operation, and also emit excessive noise during operation.
  2. Hydraulic crushers . Mechanical sink dispensers are reliable and primitive. However, the operation of such units directly depends on water pressure. And in the absence of sufficient pressure, the device will simply refuse to work.

In addition, dispenser units are divided into two types according to the grinding method:

  • Continuous loading of leftover products. The grinding action occurs only after turning on the device.
  • Portion loading of food scraps. The grinding action begins only after a certain proportion of waste has been filled.

When the question arises in the process of purchasing a disposer about how to choose the right one and which unit is best to buy, you need to start from what type of action the device will be most suitable for. After all, if there are no problems with the water supply, then purchasing a silent hydraulic disposer would be ideal. And, if the water pressure in an apartment or house is minimal, then the right choice when purchasing would be an electric device that has a huge reserve of intensity.

The best manufacturers of dispenser units

A device like food waste grinder for a kitchen sink or disposer, as it is also called, is not often seen in Russian apartments or houses, since domestic users are accustomed to throwing food waste in the trash. This system was first used in the USA, where it gained wide popularity. After all, this is very convenient when you don’t have to shovel leftover food from your plate into the trash can, just turn on the chopper and wash everything down the sink.

Today, there are several companies on the market that offer electric disposers, which are the most commonly found on sale. True, there are also mechanical ones that operate from water pressure, but these are already difficult to find on sale, as they are not popular. Electric models are best suited for modern apartment or at home. A kitchen sink grinder will help avoid clogging of the sewer pipe and will greatly simplify your life, as no need to throw organic waste in the trash after eating.

Operating principle and design of a waste shredder for washing

Today's modern kitchen is a place where the housewife has all the technical means for convenient cooking. But after cooking, food waste remains, which can be conveniently disposed of using kitchen sinks through the drain. To prevent the pipe from clogging, you should install an electric disposer or food waste chopper.

This device is a small tank with a built-in electric motor, inside of which there is a chamber for grinding food waste. At the top of the device there is a hole with a special disk, which is connected to the sink drain hole. A disk rotating from the motor produces preliminary grinding of waste, which, under the influence of centrifugal force, falls into the main tank.

What happens next chopping leftover food using a ring of a grater, which makes the residue look like mush, allowing it to pass unhindered through the sewer pipes. The device is turned on using a button or switch similar to those used to turn on a light, which is located next to the kitchen sink. Modern models automatically stop for safety reasons if an object, such as a fork, gets into the blade of the upper chopping disk.

  • First of all, you need to disconnect the siphon and sewer drain connecting the sink and the pipe in order to install the unit in this place.
  • A special mounting mount with a special gasket is attached to the bottom of the sink, onto which the disposer will be attached.
  • Actually, the next step is to attach the device to the previously installed mounting bracket. We check the reliability of the connection, since vibrations from the electric motor can weaken the structure.
  • Then we connect the sewer drain to the outlet of the food waste shredder. It should be noted that it is better not to use a corrugated pipe, as food residues may remain in it, which will cause an unpleasant odor later.
  • And the last stage is to connect the disposer to the power supply and mount the power button in any place convenient for you.

How to use the disposer?

When operating the unit, a strict sequence of actions must be followed to ensure trouble-free operation of the system. There is nothing complicated about this and over time it will become a habit.

  1. Open the water tap
  2. Power on the device
  3. Direct food waste to drain
  4. After completing the grinding process, as soon as the characteristic noise disappears, turn off the device
  5. Then wait a little while the stream of water removes the remaining crushed waste and turn off the water

What should you not put in the shredder?

Of course, not everything can be processed with a shredder, since indiscriminate dumping of solid and other inorganic waste can lead to rapid breakdown of the unit. Below we provide a list of substances that absolutely cannot be thrown into the sink through a disposer.

  • Packaging and various containers. These are primarily plastic bags and their metallized analogues, which are often used for packaging and storing products for sale. Also, you should not throw fabric and rubber products that the machine is simply not capable of shredding.
  • Ropes, threads and hair. The danger of dropping such products is that they can get wrapped around the moving elements of the shredder, in particular the motor shaft. This will lead to loosening of the system and rapid wear of the seals. As a result, water can get directly into the electric motor and cause a short circuit.
  • Metal, ceramic, plastic and glass products. The unit simply cannot process these substances, so it is strictly forbidden to allow them to get into the kitchen sink.

A large selection of kitchen sink dispensers can be found at http://www.kz.all.biz/, where all manufacturers of such equipment are collected.

TOP 5 disposer models

A food waste disposer or chopper is not yet considered a mandatory attribute in the kitchen. But in vain! With its help you can make your life much easier. Just think: only dry garbage will remain in the bucket, because all leftover food can be thrown into the sink. No unpleasant odors, no crumbs for cockroaches - beauty! True, such a thing is not cheap, so choosing a disposer is a responsible matter.

Types of Shredders

Before choosing a food waste disposer, determine what kind of machine you need. Depending on the principle of operation, they can be divided into mechanical and electrical. The first ones are powered by water, which rotates several knives under pressure. These knives shred the garbage, sending tiny pieces down the drain.

A mechanical shredder is completely safe, since its blades are located at a sufficient distance from the drain hole.

Electric shredder household waste works on a different principle: it is turned on only as needed. There are no knives inside such a device, since pieces of garbage are crushed here by special hammers. Since there are no sharp blades, there is no risk of injury. However, the electric disposer is a little noisy when operating. In addition, it is inferior to mechanical in efficiency (not all waste can be processed).

Main selection criteria

Choosing a food waste shredder is best done with the help of specialists. True, finding such ones is not so easy: there are too few disposers on the market. Usually, craftsmen in salons selling plumbing fixtures, kitchen sinks or household appliances. They are the ones who can choose the ideal device for you, taking into account all the needs of the family.

In general, a good food waste disposer meets the following requirements:

  1. High power for electric disposers. Devices with a power of 550 W can already cope with many types of waste. This is usually enough for an average family of 4 people. There are also disposers with a power of 1300 W and higher. Such devices can handle even hard bones and nuts. However, it is quite difficult to call them economical. Choose the golden mean.
  2. Sufficient rotation speed. For mechanical dispensers, it depends on the water pressure. Electric ones boast 1400 or more revolutions per minute. The higher this number, the more food waste you can recycle.
  3. Large crushing chamber. Of course, it must fit under the sink. However, units that are too small do not perform well, so it is better to choose a large shredder.
  4. Stainless steel for parts. This is a good material to avoid corrosion. There are disposers with a special anti-corrosion coating that work quietly even in very difficult conditions (heavy metals in water, etc.).

If possible, you should choose a food waste disposer with the following functions:

  • increased sound insulation;
  • automatic overload protection;
  • reverse rotation;
  • availability of several speeds;
  • reinforced drain flange.

Since all these criteria are very important, be sure to consider them when choosing a shredder.

How to use the disposer

Before you buy a disposer, it is better to know in advance how to use it:

  • turn on cold water;
  • start the chopper;
  • pour waste into the drain hole;
  • let the device operate for 1-3 minutes until the grinding noise stops;
  • turn off the device;
  • wait 10 seconds and close the tap.

It is very important to use the disposer only with water, since none of these units work “dry”. In rare cases, to remove odor and disinfect, you can throw a lemon without water into the drain hole, but after this you must rinse the chopper chamber with water.

These are all the secrets that will help you choose a good disposer. Use it with pleasure, and let your stay in the kitchen give only positive emotions!

Waste shredders InSink Erator, Bone Crusher and Franke: what to choose?

Modern kitchen accessories are becoming increasingly popular in our country. A waste disposer is great for any family. It solves the problem of recycling food waste, which previously went into the trash. High-tech waste shredders from Franke and other companies have a number of advantages:
- Compactness. The equipment takes up little space under the sink and does not create any inconvenience for the user.
- Safety. Several degrees of protection help eliminate injuries, as well as possible emergency situations.
- Durability. The service life of a kitchen accessory is calculated in decades.
- Comfort. Forget about recycling organic waste: Now all the garbage will go straight into the sewer.

Which shredder to choose?

The key problem is choosing a specific option for your kitchen. We decided to compare several popular options for waste shredding devices to reflect their advantages and disadvantages:
- Franke SD 300 (manufacturer – Germany, induction motor type);
- BONE CRUSHER BC 900 (manufacturer – USA-China, motor type – permanent magnet);
- IN-SINK-ERATOR Evolution 200 (manufacturer – USA, induction motor type).

1. Power.

One of the most important parameters that determines the durability and performance of the device. Thus, the Franke SD 300 waste shredder has a power of 1300 W, and this is really enough for such a device. Its less productive counterpart, FRANKE SD 280, is equipped with a 560 W motor. Operation shows that it is well suited for the average family.

BONE CRUSHER BC 900 has a power of 550 W, weaker models are equipped with more modest motors (BC 800, BC 600 - 367 W). The manufacturer positions its tool as a grinder capable of “crushing bones.” However, users note that there is no significant difference in comparison with the Franke disposer. The engine is quite economical, so there should not be any significant changes in the consumption structure.

IN-SINK-ERATOR Evolution 200 has a power of 550 W. All household models are marked with approximately the same characteristics. However, this device differs from its competitors not in better side relatively high energy consumption. This is confirmed by all users of the equipment, noting, for example, that the Franke waste shredder is much more economical.

2. Rotation speed.

Another important parameter that determines the quality of work with complex and solid waste.

has a rotation speed of 1450 rpm. According to the developers, this is an excellent indicator for this kitchen accessory, which, coupled with a special grinding technology, prevents failures.

A similar solution from IN-SINK-ERATOR provides 1425 rpm, that is, approximately the same speed. Which is not surprising, since the engines of both devices have approximately the same power and operating principles. But the “bonebreaker” chopper shows enormous productivity - 2700 rpm. On the one hand, it seems that this is good, because waste will be processed much faster. But on the other hand, such a high “revolution” creates additional load on the crushing chamber and increases noise.

All the “interesting” stuff happens here. All manufacturers have opted for stainless steel, oriented towards intensive use. The chopper is installed under the mixer and is completely ready for use from the moment of installation. However, the crushing chamber of the Franke disposer has an additional anti-corrosion coating, due to which its service life is significantly increased. This great option for our conditions, where tap water, even after filtration, contains many impurities.

4. Additional accessories and options.

Manufacturers also made sure that their devices delight users with special functions. Thus, the Franke disposer has a number of undeniable advantages:
- Increased sound insulation. Even with intensive use and high loads, the device does not produce unnecessary sounds.
- Continuous loading. Waste will be destroyed much faster and easier.
-Remote control. This option allows you to eliminate direct “manual” contact with waste.
- Automatic systems security. Manufacturers have protected the Franke waste shredder from overloads, thanks to which its service life is significantly increased.

The BC 900 chopper is equipped with the following options:

- High level soundproofing;
- Reinforced drain flange.

At the same time, the pusher cover is made of plastic, which cannot but cause concern. This shredder is 10 centimeters larger in size than its Franke counterpart. And yet, they are both quite compact, and therefore the sink will still remain convenient for use.

The disposer from IN-SINK-ERATOR has the following advantages:
- Reverse (reverse rotation);
- 3 waste grinding speeds;
- Automatic overload protection;
- Low noise level.

Thus, all models are a real joy for. It will never become clogged with waste again, and good drain secured for long years forward. As for the model from IN-SINK-ERATOR, a large number of options make it quite difficult to manage and maintain. When the unit jams, it is not intended to stop it, but to increase the torque speed by 5 times, which creates an increased load on the engine.

5. Cost.

So, the presented kitchen accessories work well, despite certain qualities. However, for any buyer, it is the price of the unit that largely determines the choice. Among the presented solutions, it is the organic waste disposer IN-SINK-ERATOR Evolution 200 that is the most expensive both to purchase and to operate. The most affordable is FRANKE SD 280, and the simplicity technical solution allows to increase operational reliability. BONE CRUSHER BC 900 is in the middle price category.

Which shredder should you choose for your needs?

Thus, even a superficial analysis demonstrates that all presented models have the same functions. The high power level and increased chopper speed are not decisive. After all, the device must also be energy efficient so as not to create additional inconvenience for the family. We can conclude that it is the product from Franke that is optimal solution for household needs. Users note low noise levels, durability, and easy operation. And its cost is significantly lower than its analogues. However, each buyer makes his own choice, focusing on his preferences, and this is not surprising.

In the “Kitchen Appliances” section we mainly talk about devices for processing and preparing food, and for storing food. The only device that helps cope with the “consequences” of cooking and eating, which we have talked about more than once, is a dishwasher. But she is not the only one who contributes to cleanliness in a modern kitchen. Today we will talk about such a still rare device in Russian kitchens as a food waste chopper (recycler, disposer). We will tell you what these devices are, how they work, what models and at what price can now be purchased in Russia.

Why is this necessary?

In principle, we are all accustomed to the presence of food waste in the kitchen. This is fine. We don't seem to notice them. Some people throw garbage into a bin under the sink, others into garbage bags. Then the used container is filled, and the waste must be disposed of somewhere.

There are essentially a couple of further options. Either throw the garbage into special containers in the yard, or, if you are a lucky resident of a house with a garbage disposal, into the garbage chute. It is noticed, however, that It is often too lazy to take out the trash “in the trash” - a bucket or bags can remain in the kitchen for several days. Even if the house has a garbage chute, emptying the kitchen of garbage still often happens irregularly: we don’t have time, we’re tired, “they don’t take the garbage out of the house at night”... In general, there can be many reasons for “littering” the kitchen. Meanwhile, waste (especially food waste) emit an unpleasant odor and serve as an excellent medium for the spread of many pathogenic bacteria and microbes, attract insects, even rodents. Often curious pets climb into a bucket or garbage bag, and then children play with them... In general, waste is waste - not a pleasant thing.

The shredder is designed to deal with the most “unpleasant” waste—food waste. Of course, because we're talking about It is about the food waste shredder, and not about everyone in a row, that the user will not be completely relieved of the need to “take out the garbage.” However, if you have a shredder in the kitchen, even if non-food waste lies in a bucket or garbage bag for two or three days, this, in most cases, will not lead to the formation of an unpleasant odor or the spread of harmful bacteria. In general, if you think about it, a chopper is a very useful device that improves the quality of life.

Placement, connection

A modern food waste shredder does not take up much space; it is a fairly compact device. It is placed under the sink, and no special sink is needed to install it. A sink made of stainless steel or another material with a drain hole diameter of about 90 mm is suitable. At the same time, the drain hole in a stainless steel sink, if it does not quite correspond to the dimensions required for installing the shredder, can, as a rule, be enlarged (many shredders come with a special device for this). Installing the chopper (connecting it to the sink) is not difficult; it always comes with detailed step-by-step instructions. Interfacing the shredder with the sewer can be more difficult - it is better if this is done by a qualified specialist (plumber). Typically, the connection service is offered by sellers of similar equipment.

We also note that it is more convenient to turn the chopper on and off using a pneumatic switch. In this case, the device activation button can be installed next to the sink (on the countertop) or directly on the sink.

Types and principles of operation

Currently, there are two types of food waste shredders on the Russian market: electric and powered by water flow (hydraulic shredders). Electric models are the most common. The design of such grinders provides a working chamber (its volume depends on the model of the device) into which food waste falls. At the bottom of the working chamber there is a rotating disk. The speed of its rotation depends on the power of the electric motor - the higher it is, the faster the rotation, the faster the waste is crushed. Residues of products fall onto the disk and, due to centrifugal force, are distributed along the walls of the chamber (like in a juicer). On the walls, as a rule, there are special graters (self-sharpening), and in contact with them, the waste is crushed. The disk itself also has a “grinding mechanism” - special metal “cams” that rotate freely. Thanks to them solid waste are crushed into smaller parts, in addition, the “cams” contribute to more thorough abrasion of waste on the grater on the walls of the chamber. Next, the path of crushed waste particles (they are usually no more than 3 mm in size) goes to the sewer. Through holes in the rotating disk they are washed away with water. Maximum level noise during operation of the electric shredder - 70 dB (during grinding of solid waste).

Electric shredders are divided into models of continuous operation (first the mechanism is started, then waste enters the working chamber), and those into which the remaining products should be loaded in portions (first you need to fill the working chamber, then turn on the device). There is no fundamental difference between them, only in the sequence of operations.

Let us note that when using an electric shredder, the consumption of water and electricity, of course, increases, but the increase rates cannot be considered noticeable. Water consumption will increase by approximately 3 liters per day per person. Monthly electricity consumption (using a model with a 0.55 hp motor power) is approximately the same as using a 100 W light bulb for an hour.

The operating principle of hydroshredders is different. Their design does not include an electric motor, which means they can be used even if the lights suddenly go out. Due to the smaller (compared to electric) number of working elements and the absence of an electric motor, they are quieter than their electric “colleagues” (although they cannot be called “loud”). Hydroshredders also have a working chamber. Instead of a rotating disk, it contains stainless steel knives (usually 5 of them). They are activated after turning on the water - they work thanks to its current, the mechanism used in the device is simple. Food waste enters the working chamber, the knives crush it, and then it is washed off with water into the sewer. However, there is one problem with hydro-shredders - they are very sensitive to water pressure. If the pressure is insufficient, they refuse to work normally; if the pressure is too high, they may break.

What you can and cannot grind

With the help of a food waste shredder (any type), you can “deal with” a lot of food scraps. These are trimmings, peelings of vegetables and fruits, stems of greenery, watermelon and melon rinds, nuts (with shells), seeds, fruit pits, bones from fish, chicken, small meat bones, eggshell, pasta, cereals, bread. Moreover, the shredder can also handle some inorganic waste: cigarette butts, napkins, disposable paper towels. By the way, there are a number of videos on the Internet showing the operation of shredders.

It must be said that ground residues, especially those that are quite hard (for example, from chicken bones) have a positive effect on the condition of the insides of sewer pipes - the walls of the pipes are cleaned to some extent, less risk clogging.

Of course, there are restrictions on waste recycling. You should not try to shred plastic bags (for example, in electric shredders they can wrap around the axis of the shredding mechanism, which can cause the device to stop working), threads and hair (there is a danger of them wrapping around the operating shaft of the engine and its emergency stop as a result of overload). Other non-food waste should also not be crushed using such devices.

There is no need to experiment with steamed onion skins or hot fat. The latter can stick to the grinding elements and reduce the quality of grinding. In addition, the fat itself and poorly ground residues can contribute to clogged sewer pipes.

Naturally, do not throw large bones into the grinder. Most likely, if this does happen, the protection will work and the device will turn off, but then the bone will have to be removed from the grinder (for this there is a special key included in the delivery set) - wasting time.

Stringy and fibrous waste (celery stalks, corn cobs, meat tendons, banana peels) are also dangerous. They are not normally ground in the grinder, but they interfere with its operation, since there is a danger of them enveloping the grinding elements. However, for hydroshredders, due to a different grinding principle, the “fibrous problem” is less relevant.

Here's advice from one of the electric shredder manufacturers:

Be careful when processing the following products:

. scales large fish(carp, carp, crucian carp);
. pork or beef veins, raw;
. pickles, namely stems of dill, parsley and other fibrous plants in large quantities(clogging may occur in the drain siphon);
. We recommend grinding small hard objects: small bones, small fruit seeds for better cleaning grinding chamber, as well as citrus fruits, watermelon rinds, coffee waste, grapes;
. husks from sunflower seeds (in large quantities).

In general, before you throw something into the shredder, just think about how it might end. In general, you should always think about this, including when using various household appliances.

Models and prices

Despite the fact that food waste grinders are not considered to be popular devices among Russians (but in the USA, grinders are very popular), they are sold in Russia, and the assortment is quite wide. The main manufacturers of electric models undoubtedly include American company In Sink Erator, founded by John Hames, who invented the food waste grinder in 1927.

One of the most affordable models (sold for 5.5 thousand rubles*) is the In Sink Erator 45 electric shredder. It has an induction motor with a power of 0.5 hp. (450 W).
