These dark spots need to be pierced with something in order to pour out coconut milk. Possible equipment: corkscrew, sharp knife, stick Chinese food or a screwdriver. Once the holes are made, carefully pour out the coconut juice or drink it through a straw.

We got rid of the liquid. What's next? How to open a coconut correctly so as not to break everything around from anger? Visually find the equator of the coconut (the line at the widest part of the coconut). Then arm yourself with a hammer and start tapping the equator of the nut with a tapering striker. After such a monotonous action, the shell will not stand it and will split into two parts. Now carefully remove the “lid” of the coconut. It is possible that the pulp will stick to the shell, then use a knife and carefully separate it. Congratulations, you managed to open a coconut!

But it’s not enough to open a coconut at home - you also need to know how to eat it.

Coconut has long been established in the Ukrainian market, but has not gained incredible popularity among people. And all because not everyone knows how to open a coconut, eat it and what recipes to add it to. And in vain! Since you can cope with coconut without much effort and skill!

Is coconut a fruit or a nut? Coconut is the fruit of a palm tree that has a fleecy brown shell and white pulp. These are nothing more than coconut palm seeds. In everyday life it is called a nut, although from a scientific point of view the coconut is a drupe (a single-seeded fruit with a juicy pericarp). Simply put, these are the seeds of the coconut tree. Juicy drupes are well known to us all - plum, cherry, apricot, etc. There are different types of fruits with coconut - from first courses to desserts.

In everyday life, we call fruits the juicy fruits of trees that are suitable for food. But this term also does not suit coconuts. Whatever the name of the fruit of the coconut palm, the vitamin-rich coconut is only gaining popularity. Coconut milk is used in medicine for intravenous infusions as an antipyretic and diuretic. And the pulp of fresh coconut perfectly strengthens the immune system. In addition, coconut is often used in cooking for preparing dishes.

Coconuts are the seeds of the coconut palm

How to choose a coconut? There should be no cracks on the coconut, dark spots and mold. The place where the fruit was held on the palm tree should not be soft and pressed when pressed - this indicates rotting of the fruit.

When buying a coconut, you should be guided by the principle of choosing a watermelon - what more weight, all the better. This is natural, because in order to fall from the tree, the fruit must be ripe and heavy. It is the mature coconut that falls by itself, without outside help. By the way, the shell thickness of different fruits does not differ much. So the higher the weight, the thicker the pulp.

The presence or absence of liquid can be easily checked by shaking the nut. The greener the coconut, that is, the earlier it was picked, the more liquid it contains. In nature, during the process of fruit ripening, this liquid, which is commonly called coconut milk, turns into pulp. In a well-ripened coconut there may be very little of it, and the layer of pulp, accordingly, should be thick. If you hear ringing sound liquid - then this coconut is unripe.

The pulp of a ripe nut is easily separated from the shell and has a delicate consistency. If it clings to the layer under the shell and is somewhat hard, then this indicates one thing - the nut was removed green.

Pay attention to appearance and amount of liquid when choosing coconut

How can you tell if a coconut is spoiled? When choosing a coconut, it is important to know the signs of a spoiled fruit. Unpleasant, repulsive smell of coconut water - main feature spoiled fruit. The pulp comes away from the shell with difficulty, its layer is thin, and there is a lot of water in the coconut - the fruit was taken from the tree immature.

How to open and eat a coconut correctly? To start eating a coconut, you first need to open it. There are many ways to do this. You can break a coconut by hitting it hard with a hammer (or just something heavy). But do not forget that coconuts are very bouncy, so it is better to fix it before breaking it.

You can try sawing the hard fruit with a hacksaw. But these and similar methods have a significant drawback - juice pours out of the nut, no less tasty than the pulp. Therefore, if you want not only coconut pulp, but also a taste of coconut milk, you better do it differently. There are three holes at one end of the nut that you can try to pick out with a knife or pierce with a knitting needle.

If you want to drink juice directly from a hard fruit, you can make two holes and insert a cocktail straw into one of them. In order to simply pour the juice out of the nut, one hole is enough. When all the pleasant nectar has flowed out, you can break the coconut and start eating it. The easiest way is to chop it with a large kitchen knife.

Opening a coconut is actually very easy and simple

There is one thing in the coconut shell weakness, it is located approximately one third of the distance from the eyes to the other end. The hard fruit must be placed on a flat surface, find this place and hit it with the blunt side of the knife. Then turn the nut a little and hit again. After a few blows, a crack usually appears in the peel.

The coconut flesh should be soft and elastic, white, without stains and easy to separate from the shell. If the pulp does not separate well, it means that the fruit was picked green - however, it can, of course, be eaten.

What to cook from coconut? Dish recipes. You can make shavings, cocktails, first courses, second courses, desserts and even cosmetics from coconut. But probably the most famous dessert with coconut is Bounty. And you can also prepare it at home, and besides, this dessert will be much healthier than store-bought.

Recipes with coconut

Breakfast with coconut. Boil rice (for one serving). Cut one banana, heat 2 tsp in a frying pan. butter and cinnamon, add banana and fry a little. Place rice in the pan and sprinkle with coconut. This breakfast will be delicious both cold and hot.

Coconut ice cream. Grind the pulp of 1 coconut in a blender, add coconut milk, 4 tbsp. agave nectar, half a vanilla pod (or vanilla sugar). Mix thoroughly. 1 tbsp. Mix nectar with ripe and large banana cut into pieces, add melted chocolate.

It doesn’t matter why a coconut appeared in your house - whether it’s a gift from fate or your own whim, but something needs to be done with it. Despite its rather harsh appearance, opening a nut is not such a difficult task if you know which side to approach it from.

How to crack a coconut

Of course, this nut is an exotic fruit and not familiar to everyone. But that doesn't mean we can't deal with it.

The fruit of the coconut tree is more correctly called a drupe rather than a nut.

To cut a coconut into a nut, we must stock up necessary tools and follow a certain sequence of actions.

Preparing inventory

We will need:

  • hammer;
  • nail or screwdriver;
  • large knife or hatchet;
  • cup;
  • towel.

Don't be intimidated by the abundance of items listed. Some of them are interchangeable and are indicated in case another item is not at hand. Which tool you use depends on how you open the nut.

Drain the juice

There are three dark spots on one of the “poles” of the nut. It will be easier to make a hole in these places.

Coconut water is often mistakenly called "milk". In fact, coconut water (juice) and coconut milk are two different things. Water is what is inside the nut, and the so-called coconut milk is obtained from crushed pulp with the addition of water.

You need to choose the softest spot and make a hole in it with a nail or screwdriver

  1. Place the coconut on a towel to prevent it from sliding on the table.
  2. Place a nail on one of the marks and hit it with a hammer. Calculate the force of the blow! If you overdo it, you'll end up with a hammered nail rather than a hole.
  3. Make two holes to make it easier for the coconut water to pour out, and tip the nut over the glass.

Do not count on a full glass of juice; there is not much of it in a ripe (brown) nut.

Breaking a nut with your bare hands

It’s hard to imagine a Papuan walking under the palm trees with a carpenter’s kit. Coconuts have been eaten since time immemorial, which means that there are some “primitive” ways to present the sweet flesh to the world.

The simplest way to open a nut if you have nothing but own hands- hit it hard on a hard surface. For example, against a concrete wall. The “right hook” will have the desired effect if you aim: hold the nut so that the blow falls on the most convex part of the “equator” of the nut. As a rule, one decent blow is enough for a crack to appear. The disadvantage of this method is that if the gap is too small, you will not be able to simply break the nut into two halves with your hands and will have to repeat the maneuver. And if you are so strong that you simply smash a coconut against the wall, then you will not be able to enjoy the coconut juice - it will leak out.

How to open a coconut with a knife

If you have at least a knife, then this greatly simplifies the matter. It is advisable that it be a solid tool that inspires respect, for example, a cleaver knife, a hunting knife or a “chef’s knife.” With its help, you can cut a coconut in at least two ways.

Opening through a hole

If you have already made two holes in the shell and drained the juice, feel free to start cutting using the existing holes.

  1. We insert the knife into one of the holes with the tip.
  2. We hit the handle several times. This can be done with a hammer, or just with a fist.

This method guarantees that the nut will crack, but does not guarantee the symmetry of the resulting parts.

Video: cutting with a knife through a hole

Using a knife on the edge of a coconut

This method is used to open “full” nuts with juice inside. First of all, evaluate the “exterior” of the knife and determine what is heavier, the blade or the handle. The sharpness does not matter, because we will be tapping the nut, not cutting it. If the knife blade is heavier, use the dull side. If the handle is heavier, then grab the knife by the blade.

  1. Find a natural break line approximately halfway down the nut. As you remember, this is the very place where the shell cracks the fastest.
  2. Act accurately and carefully: with one hand, hold the nut suspended and constantly rotate it around its axis, and with the other hand, tap along this line with the blunt side of the knife.
  3. As soon as a crack appears, insert a knife blade into it and slightly push the shell apart.
  4. Pour the juice into a glass.
  5. Now unseal the nut using the knife more decisively.

How to open a green drinking coconut

Green fruits are unripe nuts that have not yet had time to “ripen.” In terms of the thickness of the peel, they are somewhat reminiscent of a pumpkin, which means that the green nut can be easily handled with a kitchen knife. Simply cut off one of the coconut poles like a “lid” and enjoy!

Green coconut juice reduces appetite, normalizes digestion, blood glucose levels, thyroid function and metabolism

Coconut water is low in calories, quenches thirst, helps get rid of bladder infections and restores physical strength after intense exercise.

Safety precautions when opening a nut

Despite the fact that it is not difficult to handle a coconut, still be careful when using sharp, piercing, or cutting objects. When using a hammer, try to protect your fingers. By the way, if, of all the ways to open a coconut, you just decide to hit it with a hammer wherever you have to, then before doing this, put it in a plastic bag so as not to later look for scattered pieces throughout the kitchen.

Cleaning the tough skin and extracting the pulp

Extraction of pulp will go faster if you take into account the following rule: the more shells, the easier it is to do. Therefore, if you do not use any “life hacks”, then the most difficult thing will be to pick copra from those very perfect hemispheres that were discussed above.

Insert the blade of a knife between the shell and the edible part and separate a piece

The most primitive way to extract the pulp is as follows: insert a knife blade between the shell and the edible part, and, shaking the knife, separate a piece. Then another one. And further. The main thing is not to rush anywhere.

This kind of meditation activity is not suitable for everyone. Things will go much faster if you use the following method:

We won't throw away the shells

If cutting a coconut was so impressive that you wanted to keep these memories exciting moments, make a souvenir from the shell. Most often, halves of nuts are used as a salt shaker, candlestick, plate for buttons, keys and other small items. If the shell is quite deep, then by turning it upside down, you will get an excellent eco-house for a hamster. Small and unsightly shards will serve as drainage for indoor flowers.

Terms and methods of storing coconut

One nut, as a rule, is eaten right away, so the question of how to store it does not even arise. It’s another matter when, for some reason, you have, as they say, “stacks” of these coconuts. Whole nuts will keep in a cool place for up to three weeks. But if you don’t work in the very store where you happened to stock up on coconuts, then you have no way of knowing how long they had already been on the shelf before you were tempted by them.

Today, coconuts can be bought in almost any store that sells fruit. But they still rarely buy them, most often because they don’t know how to open them. In fact, there is nothing complicated about it.

Coconut - a gift from heaven

We are used to calling coconut a nut. But this is not a nut, but a drupe, and its relatives are, for example, peach, cherry, plum, viburnum and even raspberries and cloudberries.

What else is good about coconut - it is absolutely waste-free, that is, all its parts are used - coconut water is drunk, milk, butter and shavings are made from the white pulp, and the shell is used for various crafts.

This is interesting! The true homeland of the coconut is not known for certain, since its seeds, carried by ocean currents, spread independently, eventually filling all the coasts of the tropical zone.

Fresh coconut is a storehouse of nutrients. It is rich in many minerals, including potassium, calcium, zinc, sodium, iron, copper, selenium, iodine, and vitamins C, K, E, group B.
Ocean currents carried the coconut fruits, allowing them to spread along the coasts of the entire tropical zone.

Coconut water is considered an excellent electrolyte replenisher (by the way, this property makes it an excellent hangover cure), and is also close in composition to human blood plasma (it can even be used for transfusions). Eating coconut can generally improve blood quality, increase the elasticity of blood vessels and lower cholesterol levels, which, in turn, significantly reduces the risk of developing atherosclerosis.

All products derived from coconuts strengthen the immune system. The pulp of the fruit is successfully used to treat diarrhea and poisoning; the local population even used it to treat cholera. Drops for ear diseases are also made from the pulp. If you burn the shell, the resulting ashes can be used to dry and disinfect wounds, including purulent ones. Coconut is generally an excellent antiseptic.

By the way! Aborigines call coconut a gift from heaven, but translated from Latin its name sounds like “monkey.” Apparently, because local residents made almost everything they needed for life from the fruits of coconut palm trees, from a variety of food products to furniture and clothing, and did not work by the sweat of their brow, Catholic preachers disliked these plants and waged a merciless fight against them, cutting them down entire coconut groves.

The local population calls coconuts a gift from heaven and makes almost everything they need for life from them.

Coconuts, especially coconut water, help improve performance excretory system, have a diuretic effect and also promote the dissolution of kidney stones. Eating coconut pulp normalizes digestion and cleanses the intestines. It is also an excellent remedy for the prevention of osteoporosis.

Attention! Patients with diabetes can drink coconut water without fear; moreover, it perfectly stabilizes blood glucose levels, but it is better for them to avoid eating the pulp and its derivatives (milk, oil), since the pulp contains more sugars.

Coconut water is a natural energy booster that can restore lost energy in short time, which makes it an indispensable drink for athletes and people engaged in physical labor. It also prevents dehydration.

Cosmetologists love coconut oil, as it nourishes, moisturizes well, significantly reduces oiliness, slows down skin aging, and also restores hair.

Selecting and opening a coconut

To choose a good coconut, remember just four rules:

  1. The coconut should be light in color. Dark - too old, overdried.
  2. The shell should not have cracks or chips, and the fibers should not be too wrinkled or broken.
  3. The coconut should be heavy and have liquid inside. Therefore, weigh the fruit in your hand and then shake it over your ear - if it gurgles, it means you can take it.
  4. There are three indentations at the top of the coconut. Inspect them carefully - they should be undamaged, clean and free of mold.

A good coconut is light in color, with a whole shell and three clean cavities

If all these conditions are met, then you will most likely get a good coconut. Now you need to open it.

This is quite simple to do, but there are some nuances.

You will need:

  1. A stable stand (this can be a small salad bowl or bowl, preferably metal so that it does not break; a salad ring of a suitable size is ideal).
  2. Something sharp (an awl, a screwdriver, a thick nail; some men generally prefer a drill and a metal saw blade, especially if they later make something out of the shell).
  3. A knife with a sharp tip.
  4. Hammer (preferably small).
  5. Container for draining coconut water.
  6. Spoon.

Start by poking the three indentations on the top of the fruit with your sharp object. One of the holes is easily pierced. Expand it (this can be done with the sharp tip of a knife or even the handle of a teaspoon; you can also use a regular corkscrew).
Hammer and screwdriver - best tools for opening a mature coconut

In principle, you can already pour out the coconut water, but it is better to make a second hole to speed up the process. You can't do without a hammer here. For example, place a screwdriver on the second recess and hit it with a hammer. You now have a second hole.

Now drain the coconut water. It is not stored for a long time, so it is better to drink it immediately or put it in the refrigerator and use it within 24 hours, for example, for culinary purposes.
This line is the best way to open a coconut

Let's start breaking the coconut. Mentally divide it into three parts (as in the picture) and start tapping along the indicated line with a hammer, turning the coconut in a circle. Soon a crack will appear (sometimes after the first lap). If you don't have the patience, you can insert a screwdriver into this crack and hit it with a hammer - the fruit will crack.

Video: how to open a ripe coconut

But there is one trick here. You can make the white pulp separate from the shell itself. To do this, continue jerky, but not very with strong blows tap the coconut along the drawn line. It is better to hit with the sharp side of the hammer.

If everything is done correctly, the coconut will not only split into two parts, but the flesh itself will separate from the shell. All you have to do is sharp knife remove thin brown layer. If the pulp does not separate, it doesn’t matter. Using a sharp knife, cut it into segments right into the peel, and then scrape it out with a spoon.

How to open a drinking coconut

A young, unripe fruit that contains a lot of coconut water is called drinkable. It is covered with a thick inedible intercarp. The pit in it has not yet completely hardened, so such a coconut can be easily opened with a sharp knife. The natives knock off the lid with one blow, but you shouldn’t try to repeat this. It takes a lot of practice to do this.

You can buy drinking coconuts in countries where they grow. This product is also available in some online stores. So we still have more access to mature coconuts. But if you still have to face the green ones, make a hole as best you can. Shelled coconuts are easier to open.
It is easier to open already cut drinking coconuts

For example, you can:

  1. Remove the pulp from one side only, poke a hole and put a straw in there. This method is good if you have a not very sharp or small knife.
You can simply poke a hole in a drinking coconut
  2. Make a hole using a special coconut corkscrew.
You can open a drinking coconut with a special corkscrew
  3. Using a sharp knife, make a cut parallel to the bottom of the pre-hewn coconut.
You can carefully cut off the cap of a green coconut.
  4. Make four cuts and remove the resulting lid. If the coconut is very young, you can simply cut it with a sharp knife; if it is of medium maturity, you can cut it with four strokes of the cleaver (do not use your hands). It is convenient to eat the pulp from a coconut opened in this way with a spoon.
Four cuts are the most popular way to open a drinking coconut.
  5. Drill a hole with a drill and insert a straw into it.

What to do with coconut meat

The white flesh of coconut can be used to make milk, butter and shavings.

Milk

The pulp must be crushed. This can be done in two ways: on a grater or in a blender.

Then the crushed pulp is poured with water in a ratio of 1: 1.5 or 1: 2. How more water, the lower the fat content of the milk. The water should be boiled and warm.

Then you can beat the mixture in a blender again and immediately strain through cheesecloth. Or add water, leave for half an hour, and then strain. Either way, you will have coconut milk that is ready to drink. I prefer to insist.
Strain the infused mixture of coconut flakes and water through cheesecloth.

If you are going to make butter later, then you definitely need to take less water. If you want to use milk for baking, then use a ratio of one to two. If you prefer to make a smoothie, you can do it either way. It all depends on whether you like it thicker or thinner. By the way, making a smoothie is very simple: pour the resulting milk into a blender (or use an immersion blender), add any fruits and berries (preferably seasonal) and blend. Of course, it is better to do this right away, since self-prepared coconut milk very quickly begins to lose its beneficial properties.

Oil

Coconut oil is made in the same way as milk. Chopped shavings and warm boiled water are mixed in a ratio of 1: 1.5. Next we proceed in two ways:

We take the milk obtained according to the recipes described above, cool it and put it in the refrigerator. In a day or less it will separate, carefully remove upper layer like cream from regular cow's milk. Transfer to a jar, store in the refrigerator and use.

Grind the pulp, pour warm water, cool completely and place in the refrigerator. Overnight, a layer of coconut oil will form on top; its consistency should resemble lard. We also carefully remove it and melt it in a water bath. Do not warm it up, just until it becomes liquid. Strain through cheesecloth to remove pieces of shavings. Pour into a clean jar and place in the refrigerator on the bottom shelf.
The consistency of homemade coconut oil is similar to lard

Freshly made coconut oil will keep for about a week, so don't make a lot of it at once.

By the way! To make oil, it is better to choose old coconuts. The older the coconut, the more oil can be extracted from it. In addition, it will be more fatty.

Coconut oil is an excellent cosmetic and medicine. They can be used to remove makeup from the area around the eyes, mix with sunscreen(or even use instead), apply as a cream to eliminate flaking of the skin, for example, on the elbows. As a medicine, it can be used to heal household burns or cuts, and against cracked heels.

Of course, milk and coconut oil obtained at home cannot be stored for long. But in my opinion, they are much nicer and healthier than those stuffed with preservatives and other chemicals industrial products. You just need to make them in small portions so you have time to use them.

Shavings

It is easiest to freeze the squeezed coconut flakes and use them as needed - add them to the dough or make the filling for the Bounty cake. But if you need shavings for sprinkling, you will have to dry them. This can be done in several ways. Here are the simplest ones:

  1. Cover a baking sheet with parchment, spread the shavings over it and leave to dry naturally.
  2. Place it on a baking sheet and place it in a preheated (one hundred degrees is enough) oven on the very top. Turn off the oven immediately, close the door and leave the chips there for a couple of days until completely dry.
  3. Dry in the oven at one hundred degrees with the door open until done.

It is better to dry coconut flakes on a baking sheet lined with parchment

Dried shavings can be stored for a long time in dry, hermetically sealed containers.

Coconut shells are also useful

Don't throw away coconut shells. You can make many useful and simply beautiful things from it. Of course, this is a topic for a separate article, but you can just admire it.
