How to make a watermark in Photoshop. How to create a watermark in Photoshop

Good day to everyone, my dear friends and guests of my blog. Are you in the mood to photoshop? I just often come across situations where people are afraid for the images on their blog (that they will be used somewhere else), or they need to send a sample of some image and be sure that that person will not use it.

Especially for this purpose, special so-called watermarks are placed on the images. They are usually not very noticeable, but are designed to protect your property from illegal use. Well, by the way, not only for this, since many people are hesitant to use pictures with watermarks. In this case, at least let the name of your brand appear, which is also very good. OK. I won’t tell you about the principle, but rather I’ll show you with an example how to make a watermark on a photo using Photoshop and without it.

Using Photoshop

If I need it, then in such cases I turn to my favorite Photoshop. So open this friend and upload some picture there that you want to protect.

Option 1

So how? I think it's quite good. But just in case, I have prepared a second option on how to do this.

Option 2

Without photoshop

In general, you don’t even have to use Photoshop to install such a protection tool. There are many programs and services that will help you bring all this to life without any problems. Moreover, not everyone will download Photoshop to do this. In general, I will show you how to create a watermark using one example good service.

  1. Go to the site watermark.ws and go through a simple registration, or log in using Facebook, which is what I actually did. Service of course English, but nevertheless, everything in it is absolutely clear, and even more so, I’ll tell you everything now.
  2. To begin, you will need to create a folder for your imported photos. To do this, click on “Add folder”, after which you will need to set any name for your folder. Although by default you will already have one folder created, so you most likely won't even have to create anything.
  3. Next, you will need to select the source of your photo, i.e. either from your computer or from external sources, for example social networks or cloud services. Select "Select from computer". Now select your images. By the way, you can upload several images at once and use all your signs for all of them at once, which makes working in this service even more convenient.
  4. When you have uploaded a photo (or several photos), you need to hover over it and select the only button that appears “Edit Selected”.
  5. Now that the picture has opened, we will begin to protect it. Do you see tools for work appearing below? These are the ones we will need, but not all of them. Click on the "Text" button to start creating the inscription.
  6. After this, you will have other editing tools available. But first, we write the text itself, for example, the website address.
  7. As you can see, two functions have appeared in the text block, namely resizing the image and rotating it. You can play around with all this to achieve the desired result. For example, you can again put the text diagonally and make it larger. And of course, to move this inscription, you just need to hold down the left mouse button in its center and drag it anywhere.
  8. Now let's go to the menu below the picture. With it we will edit everything we need. For example, click on "Opacity" and set this percentage to 35. This will make the text more transparent.
  9. And by clicking on “Single” and selecting “Tiled”, your inscription will multiply throughout the image. Many people make this move.
  10. Well, you can also do many other great functions, such as choosing a font (Font), or putting copyright icons (Sign), etc. See all the features for yourself.
  11. Well, after you have finished everything, click on the “Finish” button. And after completion, click on “Download” to download the image.

Here they are interesting ways I introduced you today. It's up to you to decide which ones to use, or maybe you'll come up with something of your own. By the way, what do you think is more convenient to use, third-party services or Photoshop? Please answer in the comments.

But if you are not very strong in Photoshop, or don’t understand it at all, then I strongly recommend that you just study awesome course on learning photoshop from scratch. Everything is described here in great detail, and most importantly, in an interesting and understandable way. human language. I highly recommend checking it out for anyone starting out. In addition, I have it especially for you.

Best regards, Dmitry Kostin.

Sometimes it becomes extremely necessary to protect your photographs or pictures from theft and distribution on other resources, which “thieves” usually pass off as their own.

There is no 100% protection, but making a watermark is still better than nothing. At the very least, most people will not want to take such “tagged” photos and will not post them on their websites or social networks.

Consider 3 simple ways applying a watermark to a photo without Photoshop and additional programs. 2 of them will be online.

Method No. 1

1. Upload the photo you want to protect with a watermark.

2. Click on edit. Choose what you want to apply text or logo. Everything is clear with the text. For example, I'll select the logo.

3. Upload a pre-prepared logo, preferably with a transparent background (png format).

4. Adjust the transparency and size of the logo. Move it to the right place, if necessary, you can multiply it.

5. Once everything is ready, click the save button and download the finished photo.

Method No. 2

In principle, the first method will be quite sufficient, but there are times when the site does not work and a worthy alternative is needed.

A second online service will come to the rescue. There is only one drawback to it - it is in English.

But the essence is the same everywhere. Uploaded, edited and saved. I chose it because of its clear and convenient interface.

1. Click on the button as shown in the picture and upload the photo you want to process.

2. Hover over the photo and click “Edit”.

3. At the bottom of the screen there is a toolbar. There you can crop the photo, apply filters or expand the picture.

We are interested in the “Watermark” button. Click on it and choose what you want to overlay, text or logo. For example, I'll first select the text and then add the logo.

4. Write the text you need or simply copy the address of your website and paste it into the input field.

A new toolbar for working with text will open in front of you.

  1. Text color (in my example it is black)
  2. Text background (in my example the background is yellow)
  3. Transparency (than less value, the less visible the watermark is in the photo)
  4. Line spacing
  5. Possibility to multiply a watermark throughout the photo
  6. Size
  7. Stroke text with a different color
  8. Letter spacing
  9. Lines
  10. Cancel
  11. Apply
  12. Possibility to add a brand icon
  13. You can expand the text, underline it, or make it bold

5. If nothing else is required, click the “Apply” button and save the image. I will also add a logo to this photo. Click the “Watermark” button again and select the logo.

6. Upload your image by clicking “Import logo”.

7. Edit the size, transparency, location of the watermark and click on the “Apply” button. You can save the template, or you can skip it.

Then click on the green “Finish” button. Wait a couple of seconds and click the green “Download” button in the upper right corner.

Method No. 3

If for some reason you are not comfortable making watermarks online, then you can use a simple, lightweight and free program for Windows (suitable for all versions).

This program can be used not only to create watermarks, but also to view and edit photos. The program understands all formats and is very easy to configure.

It will also be useful for those who need to put their mark on several photos at once. For example, you can click a couple of clicks and hundreds of photos will be with your logo.

How to do this, see this short video– instructions:

Types of watermarks

Watermarks can be divided into 2 types. The first type is applying text to an image. The second type is applying a logo to the image.

Minus the text. It looks simple, boring and sometimes even ruins the whole look of the photo.

Plus text. Quick and easy to apply to photos.

Minus the image. You will have to order a picture for the watermark from the designer (you need money). Or you will have to search for a suitable one on the topic on the Internet. Or draw it yourself (it takes time).

Pros of the picture. Looks nice and professional.

In conclusion

These three methods will be enough to complete the desired task. Add my instructions to your bookmarks so that you always have them at hand at the right time.

If you know any other free services for creating and adding watermarks, please share them in the comments! I'd be happy to add them to my list.

I share my skill on how to make a watermark in Photoshop and tell you why it is needed.

I recently got into web design. I started accepting orders for small works and realized that you always send the customer a sketch to show only under the protection of a watermark. And you remove it after full payment of the order. I also use a watermark on my video slides.

Quite often I make greeting cards for my loved ones in Photoshop. I also protect them with a watermark. It is well suited for copyright protection in photographs.

The watermark can be colored or transparent. I prefer a transparent watermark. Now we will make it in Photoshop CS6.

Guide on how to make a watermark in Photoshop CS6

1. Create a document in Photoshop, size 400*100, give it the name “Watermark”.
To do this, click “File” and in the window that appears, “Create”:

2. Fill in all the required fields as shown in the picture:

Please note the following points:

  • width - 400 (for slides 800-1000) pixels
  • height - 100 (for slides 200) pixels
  • permission 300 (very often Photoshop automatically suggests something else)
  • color mode RGB(important!)
  • background content - Transparent(you may have “White” on the machine)

Only after carefully checking all the points I have written down, click “OK”.

3. On the left toolbar, find the Horizontal Text Tool:

4. Click with this tool on our document so that the cursor appears.

5. We need to make the color of the inscription black. To do this, click on the font color icon on the top panel - I have it for now blue color(will only appear once you have your cursor on the document):

6. As soon as you click on the icon, you will see a new window in which we set the font color to black by moving the circle to the bottom left position and clicking the “OK” button:

As you can see, the color has turned black.

7. You can also adjust the font size and font name. I have the font "Rubius" and font size 14:

The font can be downloaded from the link from my Yandex.Disk https://yadi.sk/d/eD73rTIijNa5z. I use it often, it looks very nice in inscriptions.

8. We write down either our first and last name, or the name of the site. In the video I write down my first and last name, and now I’ll write down the name of the site (in English):

9. If your text does not occupy the entire field, double-click on the “T” icon, the text will be highlighted and you will select the font size on the top panel. When you're done, double-click on the same text icon again:

This is how you can make a colored watermark. You can change the font color as you wish, you already know how to do it.

How to make a watermark transparent

10. Make the watermark transparent. To do this, add a layer style by clicking the fx layer icon:

11. A window will appear and we select (click) “Embossing”:

Another window will open and select “Embossing” there too:

12. Make our watermark transparent:

How to make a watermark transparent:

  • click on the inscription “Layers” (number 1 in the figure)
  • a window will open with our inscription
  • near the word “Fill” click on the triangle in the figure, number 2)
  • a slider will appear
  • move it to the far left position until the number “100%” next to the word “Fill” changes to the inscription “0%” (number 3 in the figure)
  • Let's see how the inscription has become almost invisible - transparent (number 4 in the picture)

Now you know how to make a watermark transparent in Photoshop.

The first save for possible correction of something in Photoshop (what if it becomes necessary?):

The second save is a working one, to use our watermark. This is what we will work with in the future:

Saving it in this extension will make it transparent (without a background) and then it can be overlaid on any image. For example, I open a photo of a beaded product in Photoshop and transfer a watermark onto it (just drag it) and it fits beautifully on the background of the picture:

This concludes the lesson. Now you know all the nuances about how to make a watermark transparent and opaque in Photoshop.

I recorded a video for you on how to make a watermark transparent in Photoshop CS6. Watch it and make it for yourself.

Until the next lessons. I have a question for you: do you need lessons like this? Does it benefit you? I want to figure out whether to continue them or not. Thanks in advance for your answers.

Best regards, Galina Nagornaya

P.S. If something didn’t work out for you, write in the comments, I’ll help, fix it... Main mistake here - they did not add styles, but there is embossing in them.

Instructions

Launch Paint and create a new image using the New command from the File menu. Double-click on the "Background" icon in the Layers panel. In the dialog box that opens, uncheck the “Visible” property - the background will become transparent. Add a new layer using Ctrl+Shift+N or by clicking on the “Add New Layer” icon in the Layers panel.

On the toolbar, press T. On the properties panel, set the font type and size. Set the main color to white - it will suit both dark and light backgrounds of the images. Write the text you have chosen as your watermark.

On the toolbar, check "Select Rectangular Area" or press S on your keyboard. Select the text with a rectangular frame and press Ctrl+X to cut out the selected area. In the Layers panel, click the Cross icon to delete a layer. Add a new layer and use Ctrl+V to paste the cut fragment.

Hold Shift, grab one of the corner size handles with your mouse and drag towards or away from the center to change the size of the inscription. When you are happy with the dimensions, press Enter. Double-click on the layer icon in the Layers panel and lower the opacity to about 70. Save the image in png or pdn format using the "Save As" command from the "File" menu.

You can use a drawing as a watermark. You can create it yourself or find a ready-made image. Remove the background of the picture using the Magic Wand tool. In the properties panel, set the mode to “Add”, sensitivity to about 17%. Click on the areas you want to delete and click Delete.

Select the picture with the Rectangular Marquee tool, then press M on the keyboard. Resize the image as in step 4, but do not press Enter so that the selection frame remains around the picture. From the Adjustments menu, click Make Black and White.

Again, activate the Magic Wand tool in Add mode and click on the background. From the Edit menu, select Invert Selection. On the Effects menu, in the Artistic group, click Pencil Sketch. Leave the settings as default.

Then in the same menu, in the “Stylization” group, click “Bas-relief” and select the rotation angle so that the picture is most expressive. Reduce and save in png or pdn format.

Please note

It is more convenient to add watermarks to an image using the “Import from File” command in the “Layers” menu.

Often certain photographs convey the feelings, mood and thoughts of the photographer. A simple caption on the photo can enhance this effect. By selecting beautiful font and a suitable phrase, you can add brightness, personal experiences to the picture and make it speak. Or consider another option: you just need to make a greeting card from a photo. And again we return to the need to get acquainted with such an Adobe Photoshop tool as “Text”.

You will need

  • Adobe Photoshop, photography.

Instructions

Finding it on the toolbar is very easy. The icon looks like the letter "T". If you expand this tool, you will see that there is a regular vertical and horizontal text, and there is a vertical and horizontal mask text. We'll be ordinary.

So far the text does not look very nice: regular font, black color, no effects. First, you can format the text a little. In the top panel you can find tools that will help you change the font, size, location, and perform deformation. Also use the side menu. There are quite a lot of settings here and the text can be controlled as you wish. Choose a font that suits your photo, adjust it as you see fit, and repaint it in a different color if necessary.

Video on the topic

Please note

You can transform the text and give it different shape, depending on what result you want to get.

If you have a photo in electronic form(in a file), then the easiest way is to put an inscription on it using some kind of graphic editor. After this operation, the photo with text can be saved as a “hard copy” using a printer or used in the same virtual electronic form on the Internet or on your own computer. The procedure using Adobe Photoshop is described below.

You will need

  • Graphic editor Adobe Photoshop

Instructions

Then press D to set default colors ( white background and black text), followed by the T key to use the “ ” tool. After that, click the photo anywhere and start typing. It’s okay, it will be too small, lacking contrast, or located in the wrong place where it should be - then you will adjust everything, but now you just need to create an object for later editing.

Once the label text is created, click the Move tool - this is the topmost icon in the toolbar. This will simultaneously turn off the text input tool. If the inscription needs to change the font, color or size, then go to the “Character” panel and set all the necessary values. If such a panel is not on your screen, then you can find it in the menu section called “Window”. In addition to the listed settings, in this panel you can adjust the spacing and lines, make the font bold, italic or underlined, and apply a lot of other options to the font.

Having finished with the font, move the inscription to the desired place in the photo - this can be done with the mouse or the navigation keys (arrows).

To finish working with the inscription, you can apply any effect to the text (shadow, gradient fill, relief, glow, etc.). These types of effects are applied not so much to the text as to the layer and are collected in one panel with a separate tab for each type of effect. To launch this panel, double-click the text layer in the Layers Palette.

If you plan to somehow use or edit what you have created in the future, then save all the created layers and effects in Photoshop format (PSD). To do this, simply press CTRL + S and specify the name and location of the file.

And you can save a photo with an inscription in a format more suitable for use, for example, on the Internet using the keyboard shortcut CTRL + SHIFT + ALT + S. In the window that opens, select the format and the quality settings corresponding to this format, and then specify the name of the new file and save to the right place.

In order not to forget when and where the photograph was taken, and who is depicted in it, it is necessary to provide it with explanatory notes. This marking makes it easier to organize any family photo album.

Instructions

If the photograph is film and you do not plan to convert it to digital format, apply text to it at the stage of contact or projection printing. Take a transparent film (it should match the type of printer). Print an inscription on it in bold font size about 14. If you plan to apply the marking to many different photos, print all the inscriptions onto the films. After printing, cut out the lettering.

When printing photographs under the light of a laboratory flashlight and the enlarger's red filter on, apply an inscription to that area of the image at the top or bottom of the image (but not in the middle) that is not light (and dark on the positive). Press the film onto the paper with the glass, then go through the usual cycle of printing, developing and curing. The text will appear white on a black background.

When taking photos mobile phone If it has a graphic editor, open the photo in it after shooting. Select the “Text” tool, enter text, select its position, size and color, confirm the operation, and then save the photo. If you want to leave the original file unchanged, save to a new one. To make text with a shadow, apply it twice, first with one desired color, then, with a slight offset, with another.

To apply text to a photo, use the graphic editor that you know how to use. Open the photo file and select the “Text” tool in the toolbar. Unlike a telephone, on a computer you must first select the size, color and style of the font and the position of the inscription, and only then enter the text. If you are using the GIMP editor, after applying the text, perform the operation “Image” - “Flatten Image”. Then save the file. Just as in the previous case, in order to leave the original image unchanged, save to a new file.

If you do not know how to use any graphic editors, use the online service to add text to a photo, the link to which is provided at the end of the article.
