The cherry orchard on the estate of Lyubov Andreevna Ranevskaya had to be sold due to debts. Ranevskaya and her daughter Anya, about seventeen years old, had been living abroad for several years. The house was looked after by Lyubov’s brother Leonid Gaev and Varya, a girl of twenty-four years old who was once adopted by Ranevskaya. Lyubov had almost no money left, life was not going well: her husband died, her son Grisha died, the man she loved fell ill, and then he robbed her and abandoned her.

The brother and daughter met the arrival of Lyubov and Anna, and the governess was already waiting at home

Dunyasha and the merchant Ermolai Lopakhin, as he put it, became rich, but remained the same man. Epikhodov, an employee who has a tendency to constantly find trouble for himself, also came.

The carriages arrived, the house was filled with people, each of whom enthusiastically talked about something different. Having started talking about selling the estate, Ermolai Alekseevich offered to rent out plots of land. But Lyubov does not want to hear about the cutting down of her beloved garden. Lopakhin, loving Ranevskaya, wants to stay, but is forced to leave. The arrival of Pyotr Trofimov, who was once Grishin’s teacher, has changed beyond recognition.

Everyone has left, leaving Varya and Gaev, who begins to blame his sister for not finding a nobleman’s husband. Anya, who heard the conversation, is dissatisfied with the words. Gaev begins to plan how he will get the money, claiming that he will not allow the garden to be sold.

After breakfast in the city, Lopakhin with Lyubov and Leonid stop at the chapel where Epikhodov recently confessed his love to Dunyasha, who, however, gave her preference to the footman Yasha. Lopakhin never convinces them to agree to the lease.

Anya, Varya and Petya arrive. The conversation comes about pride, Trofimov does not see the point in it, he is dissatisfied with the way noble people communicate with the working class. First Lopakhin tries to express his opinion, then Ranevskaya, but none of them listens to the others, so at some point there is silence.

Anya and Trofimov are left alone, rejoicing in the absence of Vika. Trofimov convinces Anya that the value of freedom surpasses love, and happiness in the present can only be achieved by redeeming the past with labor.

It's time for the auction. On the same day, out of luck, a ball is held at the estate. An excited Ranevskaya is waiting for Leonid, but the money sent by her aunt was not enough to buy out the estate.

Trofimov calms the crying Ranevskaya, who considers the garden the meaning of her life. Love begins to think about the possibility of returning to the man who deceived her. Petya judges Ranevskaya's love for a thief. Angry, Love, in revenge, calls him a funny eccentric and similar words, asserts the need to fall in love. But then she asks for his forgiveness and dances with him.

A joyful Lopakhin and a depressed Gaev arrive, who immediately leaves. The buyer of the estate turns out to be Ermolai, who is happy and wants to cut down cherry orchard.

Ranevskaya and Gaev became somewhat more cheerful after the sale of the garden was so exciting to them. Lyubov intends to live in Paris with money that was not useful for trading. Anya is happy at the thought of starting a new life. Simeonov-Pishchik appears and, surprising everyone, begins to distribute debts.

Time has passed. Gaev began working in a bank. Lopakhin hires Charlotte and Epikhodov, Varya and Lopakhin like each other, but Ermolai does not dare to make a move. The house is empty; the old servant Firs remains in it, whom they wanted to send to the hospital, but forgot. Sighing, upset at Gaev’s departure in his coat, he remains motionless. In the ensuing calm, the crackling sound of trees being felled with an ax is heard.

The action takes place on the estate of landowner Ranevskaya. It's spring and the cherry trees are blooming. However, the magnificent garden was soon to be sold for debts. Over the past five years, the landowner, together with Anna, her seventeen-year-old daughter, lived abroad. On the estate were Gaev, her brother and Varya, an adopted daughter of twenty-four years old. Things were going badly for the landowner; there was practically no money. Ranevskaya constantly spent money. Her husband died six years ago due to drunkenness. The landowner fell in love with another and began to live with him. Soon her son Gregory drowned. Ranevskaya could not bear such grief and went abroad. The lover followed her. He fell ill, and the landowner settled him in her own dacha. She looked after him for three years. And when she was forced to sell her dacha for debts and moved to Paris, her lover robbed her and disappeared.

Brother and daughter met Ranevskaya and Anna at the station. The maid Dunyasha and the merchant Lopakhin were waiting for them at home. The clerk Epikhodov came. Something happened to him all the time.

The carriages arrived. The house was filled with people. There was excitement in the air. Ranevskaya looked at the rooms and recalled the past with tears of joy. The maid hurried to tell Anna about the proposal made to her by the Epikhodovs. Anna gave advice to Varya to become Lopakhin's wife. Varya dreams of giving Anna as a wife to a wealthy man. The governess boasted about her own dog. The neighboring landowner asked for a loan of money. The servant Firs heard practically no one and constantly muttered.

Lopakhin told the landowner that the estate would soon be sold at auction. To avoid this, it was necessary to divide the land into parts and rent them out. Ranevskaya did not want to cut down the magnificent cherry orchard. Lopakhin wanted to stay with the landowner as long as possible. However, he needed to leave.

At first the landowner did not recognize Pyotr Trofimov. He turned ugly and became an eternal student. Ranevskaya began to cry, remembering her son Grisha. The boy's teacher was Trofimov.

The landowner's brother was left alone with Varya and tried to talk about business. There was a wealthy aunt in Yaroslavl. However, she did not experience kindred feelings for them: Ranevskaya did not become the wife of a nobleman and did not lead a virtuous lifestyle. The brother loved the landowner, but called her vicious. This displeased Anna. Gaev continued to plan for the future. The landowner must ask Lopakhin for funds, Anna will go to Yaroslavl. In general, they will do everything to prevent the estate from being sold. The landowner's brother even took an oath. Firs took him to bed. Anna is sure that her uncle will do everything.

Lopakhin did not stop persuading the landowner and her brother to use his plan. They were all at breakfast together in the city. On our return we stopped at the chapel. Right there on the bench, Epikhodov tried to explain himself to Dunya. However, she chose the lackey Yasha.

Ranevskaya and her brother seemed not to have heard Lopakhin and were talking about something else. Unable to convince them, Lopakhin decided to leave. The landowner asked him not to leave.

Anna, Varya and Trofimov appeared. The landowner began a conversation about a proud man. Trofimov believed that there was no point in pride. He condemned the intelligentsia. Lopakhin entered the conversation. Each time he became more and more convinced that there were few decent people. Ranevskaya interrupted him and did not let him finish. Nobody wanted to listen to the others. There was silence. There was the sound of a string breaking.

Soon everyone dispersed. Anna and Trofimov were left alone. The young man convinced the girl that the main thing is not love, but freedom. To live in the present one had to suffer and work to atone for the past. Happiness is not far away.

The twenty-second of August arrived. On this day the auction took place. In the evening a ball was held at the estate. The landowner was worried in anticipation of Gaev's return. An aunt from Yaroslavl gave fifteen thousand. However, they were not enough to buy out the estate.

Trofimov calmed the landowner. It wasn't about the garden, it was worth facing the truth. Ranevskaya asked not to judge and to show pity. Without a garden, her life will have no meaning. Every day the landowner received telegrams from Paris. At first she immediately destroyed them, then she read them and tore them up. At present she does not tear up telegrams. She still loved her lover, who asked her to come. Peter condemned her for loving a scoundrel. Ranevskaya got angry and scolded him. Trofimov was about to leave this place, but as a result he stayed and danced with the landowner, who asked for his forgiveness.

Lopakhin and Gaev appeared. The landowner's brother immediately went home. The garden was sold. It was purchased by Lopakhin. The landowner picked up the keys that Varya had thrown on the floor.

Ranevskaya was sobbing. Anna consoled her. The garden was sold. However, there is still more to come whole life. They will have a different garden, more magnificent than the current one.

The house turned out to be empty. Those present said goodbye to each other and left. Lopakhin was going to Kharkov in the winter, Trofimov was leaving for Moscow. Lopakhin and Trofimov exchanged barbs. Lopakhin offered Peter money for the trip. Trofimov refused.

The mood of the landowner and her brother improved somewhat after the garden was sold. Previously, they were bothered by worry and suffering. And now they have calmed down. The landowner was going to live in Paris, using the money that her aunt sent. Anna feels excited about her new life. Suddenly Simeonov-Pishchik appeared. But he did not ask for a loan, but distributed the debts. White clay was found on his land by the British.

Everyone settled in their own way. The landowner's brother became a bank employee. Lopakhin promised to find a place for Charlotte. Varya became the Ragulins' housekeeper. Epikhodov remained on the estate. Firs was about to be sent to the hospital.

There had to be an explanation between Lopakhin and Varya. The girl likes Lopakhin. However, she cannot offer herself to him. Lopakhin agreed to end this immediately. However, during the meeting arranged by the landowner, Lopakhin could not make up his mind and left.

Everyone left the house and locked the doors. Only Firs remained in the house, whom everyone had forgotten about. He complained that the master left not in a fur coat, but in a coat. Then he lay down and lay motionless. The sound of a broken string was heard. In the garden you could hear the sound of an ax hitting a tree.

Retelling

Action 1

May, cherry trees are blooming. In the room, which is still called the nursery, the maid Dunyasha, Lopakhin and Epikhodov. They talk about how the hostess Lyubov Andreevna Ranevskaya and her daughter Anna should arrive from Paris soon. Lopakhin: “Lyubov Andreevna lived abroad for five years, I don’t know what she’s become now... She’s a good person. An easy, simple person. I remember when I was a boy of about fifteen, my deceased father - he was selling in a shop here in the village back then - hit me in the face with his fist, blood started coming out of my nose... Lyubov Andreevna, still young, led me to the washstand, in this the room itself. “Don’t cry,” he says, “little man, he’ll heal before the wedding...” My father, it’s true, was a man, but here I am in a white vest and yellow shoes. With a pig's snout in a Kalash line... Just now he's rich, a lot of money, but if you think about it and figure it out, then he's a man..."

Lopakhin doesn’t like that Dunyasha behaves like a young lady. Epikhodov constantly drops something and bumps into chairs: “Every day some misfortune happens to me. And I don’t complain, I’m used to it and even smile.” Soon the voices of those who have arrived are heard, and everyone goes to meet the hostess.

Lyubov Andreevna, Gaev, Anya, Charlotte, Varya, Lopakhin, Epikhodov and Dunyasha appear. Lyubov Andreevna rejoices at returning home: “The nursery, my dear, a wonderful room...”

Everyone leaves except Anya and Dunyasha. The maid begins to tell her that Epikhodov proposed to her, but Anya does not listen to her. Varya comes: “My darling has arrived! The beauty has arrived! Anya: “We arrive in Paris, it’s cold and snowy there. I speak French badly. Mom lives on the fifth floor, I come to her, she has some French ladies, an old priest with a book, and it’s smoky, uncomfortable. I suddenly felt sorry for my mother, so sorry, I hugged her head, squeezed her with my hands and couldn’t let go. Mom then kept caressing and crying... She had already sold her dacha near Menton, she had nothing left, nothing. I also didn’t have a penny left, we barely got there. And mom doesn't understand! We sit down at the station to have lunch, and she demands the most expensive thing and gives the footmen a ruble each as a tip...” Varya says that the estate and the cherry orchard will be sold for debts, because they have no money left at all. Anya asks if Lopakhin has proposed to Varya yet. Varya: “I think so, nothing will work out for us. He has a lot to do, he has no time for me... and he doesn’t pay attention. Everyone talks about our wedding, everyone congratulates us, but in reality there is nothing, everything is like a dream...”

They remember how their father died six years ago and their little brother Grisha drowned in the river. It turns out that he came to the estate former teacher Petya Trofimov. The sisters are afraid that he might remind Lyubov Andreevna about the boy’s death.

Enter Firs, Lyubov Andreevna, Gaev, Lopakhin and Simeonov-Pishchik. Lopakhin tries to start a conversation about the cherry orchard, but Lyubov Andreevna does not listen to him, she is too excited about her return home. Lopakhin says that an auction has already been scheduled, but the estate can still be saved. To do this, you just need to divide it into plots for dachas. Since the place is beautiful, these plots are quickly rented, and the owners will be able to pay off the debts for the estate. True, for the dachas it will be necessary to cut down the cherry orchard. Neither Raevskaya nor Gaev want to hear anything about cutting down the garden: “What nonsense!” Varya gives her mother two telegrams from Paris, but she tears them up without reading them. Gaev makes a pathetic speech to the bookcase: “Dear, respected bookcase! I greet your existence, which for more than a hundred years has been directed towards the bright ideals of goodness and justice; your silent call to fruitful work has not weakened for a hundred years, maintaining (through tears) in generations of our family vigor, faith in a better future and nurturing in us the ideals of goodness and social self-awareness.” Everyone is embarrassed for him.

Petya Trofimov enters. Ranevskaya does not recognize him at first, but remembering that he is her son’s former teacher, she begins to cry. Ranevskaya: “What, Petya? Why are you so stupid? Why have you aged? Trofimov: “One woman in the carriage called me this: shabby gentleman.” Ranevskaya: “You were just a boy then, a cute student, and now you have sparse hair and glasses. Are you still a student? Trofimov: “I must be an eternal student.”

Varya tells Yasha that his mother came to him from the village and wants to see him, but he replies: “It’s really necessary. I could come tomorrow.” Everyone leaves, only Gaev and Varya remain. Gaev says about his sister: “She married a non-nobleman and behaved one cannot say very virtuously. She is good, kind, nice, I love her very much, but no matter how you come up with mitigating circumstances, I still have to admit that she is vicious. You can feel it in her slightest movement.” Gaev is going to take out a loan from the bank, he suggests that the Yaroslavl grandmother and Lopakhin can lend money, then the estate will not be sold at auction. Anya believes him.

Act 2

Evening. The yard near the estate. Charlotte, Dunyasha, Yasha and Epikhodov are sitting on the bench. Charlotte says: “I don’t have a real passport, I don’t know how old I am. When I was a little girl, my father and mother went to fairs and gave performances. And I jumped salto mortale and various things. And when my father and mother died, a German lady took me in and began to teach me. I grew up, then became a governess. But where I come from and who I am, I don’t know...” Charlotte leaves.

Epikhodov plays the guitar. He says that he has a revolver, but he does not yet know whether he wants to shoot himself or want to live. He wants to talk to Dunyasha alone. But she sends him away, stays with Yasha and says: “I was taken to the masters as a girl, I have now lost the habit of a simple life, and now my hands are white and white, like a young lady’s. She has become tender, so delicate, noble, I’m afraid of everything... It’s so scary. And if you, Yasha, deceive me, then I don’t know what will happen to my nerves... I fell in love with you passionately, you are educated, you can talk about everything.” Yasha (yawns): “Yes, sir... In my opinion, it’s like this: if a girl loves someone, then she is immoral.” Dunyasha leaves.

Lyubov Andreevna, Gaev and Lopakhin arrive. Lopakhin again offers Raevskaya to give the estate for dachas. But she still doesn't listen to him. This morning they went to a restaurant for breakfast and spent almost all their money. But it seems to her that the estate can be saved, Gaev promises her the same. Lopakhin calls him a woman and wants to leave. Lopakhin: “Excuse me, I have never met such frivolous people like you, gentlemen, such unbusinesslike, strange people. They tell you in Russian, your estate is for sale, but you definitely don’t understand.” Ranevskaya asks him to stay and help come up with something. Lopakhin understands that you won’t get any sense from them.

Lyubov Andreevna recalls her life: “I always squandered money uncontrollably, like crazy, and married a man who made only debts. My husband died from champagne - he drank terribly - and, unfortunately, I fell in love with someone else, got together, and just at that time - this was the first punishment, a blow straight to the head - right here on the river... he drowned my boy, and I went abroad so as not to see this river... I closed my eyes, ran, not remembering myself, and he followed me... mercilessly, rudely. I bought a dacha near Menton because he fell ill there, and for three years I did not know rest, day or night; the sick man has tormented me, my soul has dried up. And last year, when the dacha was sold for debts, I went to Paris, and there he robbed me, abandoned me, got in touch with someone else, I tried to poison myself... So stupid, so shameful... And suddenly I was drawn to Russia, to my homeland , to my girl... (Wipes away tears.) Lord, be merciful, forgive me my sins! (Takes a telegram out of his pocket.) Received it from Paris today... Asks for forgiveness, begs to come back... (Tears up the telegram.)

Enter Trofimov, Varya and Anya. Lopakhin makes fun of Trofimov: “He will soon be fifty years old, but he is still a student.” Trofimov gets angry: “I, Ermolai Alekseich, understand this: you are a rich man, you will soon be a millionaire. This is how you need it in terms of metabolism beast of prey, which eats everything that comes in its way, so you are needed.” Everyone laughs. Trofimov starts a conversation about lofty matters: “Humanity moves forward, improving its strength. Everything that is inaccessible to him now will someday become close and understandable, but he must work and help with all his might those who are seeking the truth. Here, in Russia, very few people still work. The vast majority of the intelligentsia that I know does not seek anything, does nothing, and is not yet capable of work... Everyone is serious, everyone has stern faces, everyone talks only about important things, philosophizes, and yet in front of everyone the workers eat disgusting, they sleep without pillows, thirty or forty in one room, there are bedbugs everywhere, stench, dampness, moral uncleanliness...” Lopakhin: “You know, I get up at five o’clock in the morning, I work from morning to evening, well, for me I constantly have my own and other people’s money, and I see what kind of people are around me. You just have to start doing something to understand how few honest, decent people there are. Sometimes, when I can’t sleep, I think: “Lord, you gave us huge forests, vast fields, the deepest horizons, and living here, we ourselves should really be giants...” Gaev is trying to say something, but he is stopped. Silence. Suddenly the sound of a broken string is heard, fading, sad. Firs: “Before the disaster it was the same: the owl was screaming, and the samovar was humming uncontrollably.” Gaev: “Before what misfortune?” Firs: “Before the will.”

A tipsy passer-by approaches them and asks them to give him some money. Ranevskaya gives him a gold one. Varya cannot believe her own eyes. She reproaches her mother for being excessively wasteful, because the people in the house have nothing to eat, and she gives out alms. Everyone leaves except Trofimov and Anya. Trofimov: “Varya is afraid that we might fall in love with each other, and she doesn’t leave our side for whole days. With her narrow head, she cannot understand that we are above love. To bypass those small and illusory things that prevent us from being free and happy, this is the goal and meaning of our life. Forward! We are moving uncontrollably towards the bright star that is burning there in the distance!

Forward! Don't lag behind, friends! Anya (throwing up her hands): “How well you speak!” Anya: “What have you done to me, Petya, why I no longer love the cherry orchard as before.” Trofimov: “All of Russia is our garden. The earth is great and beautiful... Think, Anya: your grandfather, great-grandfather and all your ancestors were serf owners who owned living souls, and aren’t human beings looking at you from every cherry in the garden, from every leaf, from every trunk, are you really don’t hear voices... Owning living souls - after all, this has reborn all of you, who lived before and are now living, so that your mother, you, uncle, no longer notice that you are living in debt, at someone else’s expense... It’s so clear In order to begin to live in the present, we must first redeem our past, put an end to it, and we can redeem it only through suffering, only through extraordinary, continuous labor. Understand this, Anya.” Anya is delighted with Petya’s words. In the distance, Varya’s voice is heard calling her sister. Petya and Anya run away from her to the river.

Act 3

Living room in the estate. You can hear the orchestra playing in the hall. Evening. They are dancing in the hall. Varya says bitterly: “Well, they hired musicians, but how to pay?” Lyubov Andreevna also understands: “And the musicians came at the wrong time, and we started the ball at the wrong time...” Gaev is in the city, at the auction, and she is worried that he will be gone for a long time. The fate of the estate is unknown.

Ranevskaya talks to Varya about Lopakhin. She can't understand why they won't explain themselves to each other. Varya replies that she herself cannot propose to Lopakhin. Varya leaves. Ranevskaya asks Petya to calm her down. She is very worried, because at this moment her fate is being decided. Trofimov replies that the estate “has been finished a long time ago, the path is overgrown... There is no need to deceive yourself, you need to look the truth straight in the eye at least once in your life.” Lyubov Andreevna: “What truth? You see where the truth is and where the untruth is, but I’ve definitely lost my sight, I don’t see anything. You boldly resolve all important issues, but tell me, my dear, is it because you are young, that you have not had time to suffer through any of your questions? You boldly look forward, and is it because you don’t see or expect anything terrible, since life is still hidden from your young eyes? You are braver, more honest, deeper than us, but think about it, be generous... spare me. After all, I was born here, my father and mother, my grandfather lived here, I love this house, without the cherry orchard I don’t understand my life, and if you really need to sell, then sell me along with the orchard... (Hugs Trofimova, kisses him on the forehead.) After all, my son drowned here... (Cries.) Have pity on me, dear one, kind person" Petya instead hands her a telegram. This time Lyubov Andreevna does not tear her up, she thinks about whether to go to Paris, because “this wild man“I got sick again... Ranevskaya admits: “This is a stone on my neck, I’m going to the bottom with it, but I love this stone and I can’t live without it.” Petya is trying to convince Ranevskaya that this man has robbed her, that he is a scoundrel, a nonentity. Petya does not understand that he is speaking tactlessly. Ranevskaya retorts: “You have to be a man, at your age you have to understand those who love. And you have to love yourself... you have to fall in love! (Angrily.) Yes, yes! And you have no purity, and you are just a clean person, a funny eccentric, a freak... You are not above love, but you are simply a klutz. At your age, don’t have a mistress!.” Petya runs away in horror from these words: “It’s all over between us!” Lyubov Andreevna shouts after him: “Petya, wait! Funny man, I was joking!

Yasha and Firs look at the dancers. Old Firs looks sick and has difficulty standing. His fate is also being decided: if the estate is sold, he has nowhere to go. “Wherever you order, I’ll go there,” he says to Ranevskaya. Yasha is indifferent to the feelings of his owners. He cares about one thing: for his hostess to take him to Paris again: “You see for yourself, the country is uneducated, the people are immoral, and, moreover, boredom, the food in the kitchen is ugly... Take me with you, be so kind!”

The fun continues in the hall: Charlotte shows tricks, Dunyasha flirts. Varya, irritated by the inappropriate holiday, finds fault with Epikhodov, drives him away from the house, swings a stick and accidentally hits Lopakhin, who has just arrived, on the head. Those around you can’t wait to find out the results of the auction. Lyubov Andreevna hurries Lopakhin and Gaev: “Speak up!” Lopakhin is confused, Gaev looks upset. Lyubov Andreevna: “Is the cherry orchard sold?” Lopakhin: “Sold.” Lyubov Andreevna: “Who bought it?” Lopakhin: “I bought it.” Lyubov Andreevna is depressed. Varya takes the keys from her belt, throws them on the floor and leaves.

Lopakhin finally broke through, he talks about the auction, rejoices, laughs: “The cherry orchard is now mine! My! Tell me that I’m drunk, out of my mind, that I’m imagining all this... (Stamps his feet.) Don’t laugh at me!.. I bought an estate where my grandfather and father were slaves, where they weren’t even allowed into the kitchen . I'm sleeping
I’m just imagining this... (Raises the keys.) She threw the keys, she wants to show that she is no longer the mistress here... Hey, musicians, play! Come and see how Ermolai Lopakhin takes an ax to the cherry orchard! We will set up dachas, and our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will see a new life here... Music, play!”

Lyubov Andreevna sank into a chair and cried bitterly. Lopakhin consoles her: “Why didn’t you listen to me? My poor, good one, you won’t get it back now. (With tears.) Oh, if only our awkward, unhappy life would somehow change...”

Ranevskaya is left alone, “shrank all over and crying bitterly.” Anya and Petya enter. Anya rushes to hug and calm her mother: “Don’t cry, mom, you still have a life ahead of you, your good, pure soul remains... We will plant new garden, more luxurious than this... and you will smile, mom! Let's go, honey! Let's go!..”

Act 4

October. The scenery of the first act. There are no curtains on the windows, no paintings, there is only a little furniture left, which is folded in one corner, as if for sale. It feels empty. Ranevskaya and Gaev enter; she is pale, her face is trembling, she cannot speak. Lopakhin offers champagne as a farewell, but no one responds. Then Yasha gets the champagne, he does not refuse to drink it, and even criticizes: “the champagne is not real.” Yasha laughs with pleasure: he is taken to Paris. There are twenty minutes left before departure.

Trofimov enters, looking for his galoshes. Lopakhin tells him that he is also leaving: “I kept hanging around with you, I was tired of doing nothing. I can’t live without work...” Trofimov is going to Moscow. Lopakhin teases: “Well, professors don’t give lectures, I guess everyone is waiting for you to arrive!.. How many years have you been studying at the university?” Trofimov sluggishly shrugs it off. He says: “You know, we probably won’t see each other again... After all, I still love you. You have thin, delicate fingers, like an artist, you have a thin, gentle soul...” Lopakhin is touched, offers him money for the journey, but Petya refuses: “I am a free man. And everything that you all value so highly and dearly, rich and poor, does not have the slightest power over me, just like fluff that floats through the air. I can do without you, I am strong and proud. Humanity is moving towards the highest truth, towards the highest happiness that is possible on earth, and I am in the forefront!” Lopakhin: “Will you get there?” Trofimov: “I’ll get there... I’ll get there or I’ll show others the way to get there.”

You can hear an ax knocking on a tree in the distance. Lopakhin says goodbye to Petya: “When I work for a long time, tirelessly, then my thoughts are lighter, and it seems as if I also know why I exist. And how many people, brother, are there in Russia who exist for no one knows why... Leonid Andreich, they say, has accepted a position, will be in the bank, six thousand a year... But he can’t sit still, he’s very lazy...”

Anya enters and conveys her mother’s request that they not cut down the garden before she leaves. Lopakhin goes to give orders. First Anya, then Varya ask if Firs was sent to the hospital. Yasha replies that “he said in the morning...”, that is, he transferred this matter to others. His mother comes to say goodbye to Yasha. Yasha is dissatisfied: “They are only being taken out of patience.” Dunyasha cries: “You are leaving, you are leaving me...” Yasha drinks champagne: “It’s not for me here, I can’t live... There’s nothing to be done. I've seen enough of ignorance - that's enough for me. Behave decently, then you won’t cry.”

Gaev and Ranevskaya enter. Lyubov Andreevna: “Goodbye, sweet home, old grandfather. Winter will pass, spring will come, and you will no longer be there, they will break you...” Anya does not share her mother’s sadness, she is happy: “It’s starting new life!.. I will prepare, pass the exam at the gymnasium and then I will work...” A breathless Pishchik appears. He says that white clay was found on his estate. Now the British rented the estate from him and paid a lot of money.

Ranevskaya says that she has two worries - the sick Firs and Varya. She hears that the old man has been sent to the hospital and calms down. Lyubov Andreevna talks to Lopakhin about Varya: “I dreamed of marrying her to you...” Lopakhin is ready to propose. Ranevskaya calls Varya and leaves them alone. Varya pretends to be looking for something. Lopakhin still can’t start a conversation. Suddenly someone calls him, and he quickly leaves, as if he had been waiting for this call. Varya, sitting on the floor, quietly sobs.

Last preparations before departure. Ranevskaya and Gaev say goodbye to the house. Anya: "Goodbye" old life! Petya picks up: “Hello, new life!” Everyone except Gaev and Ranevskaya comes out. “They were definitely waiting for this, they throw themselves on each other’s necks and sob restrainedly, quietly, afraid not to be heard.” Lyubov Andreevna: “Oh my dear, my tender beautiful garden!.. My life, my youth, my happiness, goodbye!..”

The stage is empty. You can hear all the doors being locked and the carriages driving away. In the midst of the silence, a dull knock on wood is heard, sounding lonely and sad. Footsteps are heard, Firs appears: “Locked. They left... They forgot about me... Nothing... I'll sit here... Life has passed, as if I had never lived. I’ll lie down... You don’t have strength, there’s nothing left, nothing... Eh, you... klutz!..” He lies motionless.

A distant sound is heard, as if from the sky, the sound of a broken string, fading, sad. Silence sets in, and you can only hear an ax being knocked on a tree far away in the garden.

The dramaturgy of Anton Chekhov has a special niche in Russian fiction and the pinnacle of his creativity is this work, oh storyline which the summary of the play “The Cherry Orchard” can tell reader's diary, but about the richness of the characters’ images and the non-standard lyrical atmosphere - only a complete reading.

Plot

The Ranevskys, Lyubov and her daughter Anya, return to their native estate from Paris after a 5-year absence. He intends to cut down the garden, and sell the land and rent it out for summer cottages. Love is horrified by this prospect. She has always lived and lives in illusions, gives away money and does not believe that it is about to run out.

The garden and house are up for auction. They are bought by Lopakhin, who dreams but decides to propose to Ranevskaya’s adopted daughter. Love cries, her daughter calms her down. The women are preparing to return to Paris. At the end, the sound of an ax is heard - the cherry orchard is being cut down.

Conclusion (my opinion)

In an age when the price of benefits and personal enrichment has increased significantly, there is no place for languid memories. Pragmatists cannot comprehend romantics.

“The Cherry Orchard” is a lyrical play by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov in four acts, the genre of which the author himself defined as a comedy.

The success of the play, written in 1903, was so obvious that already on January 17, 1904, the comedy was shown in the Moscow art theater. “The Cherry Orchard” is one of the most famous Russian plays created at that time. It is noteworthy that it is based on Anton Pavlovich Chekhov’s own painful impressions of his friend A.S. Kiselev, whose estate was also sold at auction.

An important thing in the history of the creation of the play is that Anton Pavlovich Chekhov wrote it at the end of his life, being seriously ill. That is why work on the work progressed very difficultly: about three years passed from the beginning of the play to its production.

This is the first reason. The second is Chekhov’s desire to fit into his play, intended for production on stage, the entire result of thoughts about the fate of his characters, the work on whose images was carried out very scrupulously.

Artistic originality The play became the pinnacle of Chekhov's work as a playwright.

Act one: meeting the characters of the play

The heroes of the play - Lopakhin Ermolai Alekseevich, the maid Dunyasha, the clerk Epikhodov Semyon Panteleevich (who is very clumsy, “22 misfortunes”, as those around him call him) - are waiting for the owner of the estate, landowner Lyubov Andreevna Ranevskaya, to arrive. She is due to return after a five-year absence, and the household is in a state of excitement. Finally, Lyubov Andreevna and her daughter Anya crossed the threshold of their house. The owner is incredibly happy that she has finally returned to her native land. Nothing has changed here in five years. Sisters Anya and Varya are talking with each other, rejoicing at the long-awaited meeting, the maid Dunyasha is preparing coffee, ordinary household little things cause tenderness in the landowner. She is kind and generous - both to the old footman Firs and to other members of the household, willingly talks with her brother, Leonid Gaev, but her beloved daughters evoke special reverent feelings. Everything, it would seem, is going as usual, but suddenly, like a bolt from the blue, a message from the merchant Lopakhin: “... Your estate is being sold for debts, but there is a way out... Here is my project...” An enterprising merchant offers to rent out plots of the cherry orchard for dachas , having previously knocked him out. He claims that this will bring considerable income to the family - 25 thousand a year and save them from complete ruin, but no one agrees to such a proposal. The family does not want to part with the cherry orchard, which they consider the best and to which they are attached with all their hearts.

So, no one listens to Lopakhin. Ranevskaya pretends as if nothing is happening and continues to answer nothing meaningful questions about a trip to Paris, not wanting to accept reality as it is. A casual conversation about nothing starts again.

Entered Petya Trofimov, a former teacher dead son Ranevskaya's Grisha, at first unrecognized by her, brings tears to her mother's eyes with his reminder. The day ends... Finally everyone goes to bed.

Action two: there is very little left before the sale of the cherry orchard

The action takes place in nature, near an old church, from where you can see both the cherry orchard and the city. There is very little time left before the sale of the cherry orchard at auction - literally a matter of days. Lopakhin is trying to convince Ranevskaya and her brother to rent out the garden for dachas, but again no one wants to hear from him, they are hoping for the money that the Yaroslavl aunt will send. Lyubov Ranevskaya remembers the past, perceiving her misfortunes as punishment for sins. First, her husband died from champagne, then her son Grisha drowned in the river, after which she left for Paris so that memories of the area where such grief happened would not stir her soul.

Lopakhin suddenly opened up, talking about his difficult fate in childhood, when his father “didn’t teach, but only beat him when he was drunk, and that was all with a stick...” Lyubov Andreevna invites him to marry Varya, his adopted daughter.

Enter student Petya Trofimov and both daughters of Ranevskaya. A conversation ensues between Trofimov and Lopakhin. One says that “in Russia, very few people still work,” the other calls to appreciate everything that has been given by God and start working.

The attention of the conversation is attracted by a passerby who recites poetry and then asks to donate thirty kopecks. Lyubov Andreevna gives him a gold coin, for which her daughter Varya reproaches her. “People have nothing to eat,” she says. “And you gave him the gold…”

After Varya, Lyubov Andreevna, Lopakhin and Gaeva leave, Anya and Trofimov are left alone. The girl admits to Petya that she no longer loves the cherry orchard as before. The student reasons: “...To live in the present, you must first atone for the past... through suffering and continuous work...”

You can hear Varya calling Anya, but her sister only gets annoyed and does not respond to her voice.

Act three: the day the cherry orchard is sold

The third act of The Cherry Orchard takes place in the living room in the evening. Couples dance, but no one feels joy. Everyone is depressed about looming debts. Lyubov Andreevna understands that they started the ball completely inappropriately. Those in the house are waiting for Leonid, who must bring news from the city: whether the garden has been sold or whether the auction did not take place at all. But Gaev is still not there. Household members begin to worry. The old footman Firs admits that he is not feeling well.

Trofimov teases Varya with Madame Lopakhina, which irritates the girl. But Lyubov Andreevna really offers to marry the merchant. Varya seems to agree, but the catch is that Lopakhin still hasn’t proposed, and she doesn’t want to impose herself.

Lyubov Andreevna worries more and more: has the estate been sold? Trofimov reassures Ranevskaya: “Does it matter, there is no turning back, the path is overgrown.”

Lyubov Andreevna takes out a handkerchief, from which a telegram falls, informing her that her beloved has fallen ill again and is calling her. Trofimov begins to reason: “he’s a petty scoundrel and a nonentity,” to which Ranevskaya responds with anger, calling the student a klutz, a neat freak, and a funny eccentric who doesn’t know how to love. Petya is offended and leaves. A crash is heard. Anya reports that a student fell down the stairs.

The young footman Yasha, talking with Ranevskaya, asks to go to Paris if she has the opportunity to go there. Everyone seems to be busy talking, but are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the auction for the cherry orchard. Lyubov Andreevna is especially worried; she literally cannot find a place for herself. Finally, Lopakhin and Gaev enter. It is clear that Leonid Andreevich is crying. Lopakhin reports that the cherry orchard has been sold, and when asked who bought it, he answers: “I bought it.” Ermolai Alekseevich reports details of the auction. Lyubov Andreevna sobs, realizing that nothing can be changed. Anya consoles her, trying to focus on the fact that life goes on, no matter what. She seeks to instill hope that they will plant “a new garden, more luxurious than this... and quiet, deep joy will descend on the soul like the sun.”

Act four: after the sale of the estate

The property has been sold. In the corner of the children's room there are packed things ready for removal. Peasants come to say goodbye to their former owners. The sounds of cherries being cut down can be heard from the street. Lopakhin offers champagne, but no one except the footman Yasha wants to drink it. Each of the former residents of the estate is dejected by what happened, and family friends are also despondent. Anya voices her mother’s request that the garden not be cut down until she leaves.

“Really, is there really a lack of tact,” says Petya Trofimov and leaves through the hallway.

Yasha and Ranevskaya are going to Paris, Dunyasha, in love with a young footman, asks him to send a letter from abroad.

Gaev hurries Lyubov Andreevna. The landowner sadly says goodbye to the house and garden, but Anna admits that a new life is beginning for her. Gaev is also happy.

Governess Charlotte Ivanovna sings a song as she leaves.

Boris Borisovich Simeonov-Pishchik, a neighboring landowner, comes into the house. To the surprise of everyone, he repays the debt to both Lyubov Andreevna and Lopakhin. He reports news of a successful deal: he managed to lease the land to the British for the extraction of rare white clay. The neighbor did not know that the estate had been sold, so he is surprised to see the suitcases packed and the former owners preparing to leave.

Lyubov Andreevna, firstly, is worried about the sick Firs, because it is still not known for certain whether he was sent to the hospital or not. Anya claims that Yasha did it, but the girl is mistaken. Secondly, Ranevskaya is afraid that Lopakhin will never propose to Varya. They seem to be not indifferent to each other, however, no one wants to take the first step. And although Lyubov Andreevna makes a last attempt to leave the young people alone to resolve this difficult issue, nothing comes of such an undertaking.

After the former owner of the house last time looks longingly at the walls and windows of the house, everyone is leaving.

In the bustle, they did not notice that they had locked up the sick Firs, who was muttering: “Life has passed, as if he had never lived.” The old footman holds no grudge against his masters. He lies down on the sofa and passes into another world.

We bring to your attention Anton Chekhov's story about the Defenseless Creature, where, with the subtle and inimitable irony characteristic of the writer, he describes the character main character- Shchukina. What was the peculiarity of her behavior, read in the story.

The essence of the play “The Cherry Orchard”

From literary sources it is known that Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was very happy when he came up with the name for the play - “The Cherry Orchard”.

It seems logical, because it reflects the very essence of the work: the old way of life is changing to a completely new one, and the cherry orchard, which was treasured former owners, is mercilessly cut down when the estate passes into the hands of the enterprising merchant Lopakhin. “The Cherry Orchard” is a prototype old Russia, which is gradually disappearing into oblivion. The past is fatefully crossed out, giving way to new plans and intentions, which, according to the author, are better than the previous ones.
