At the beginning of the 19th century, people began to plant trees and shrubs here not only to renew forests, but also for a very important practical purpose - to stabilize the shifting sand dunes. These two phenomena turned out to be interrelated. Rocks were needed that could firmly hold moving soil with their roots. Thus, the Curonian Spit turned into a kind of testing ground for the most promising trees from this point of view. The introduction work took place on the basis of one of the oldest forestries in East Prussia, created in the 17th century - “Grenz”. For short time on Curonian Spit 80 species of trees and shrubs were acclimatized from different corners Earth. In the 20th century, when the territory ceded Soviet Union, the work was continued by the Curonian forestry enterprise, and since 1987 - by the forest districts that are part of national park“Curonian Spit”. To fix the sand, 20 species of plants were used, of which the most successful were pine trees. And today, two thirds of the forest areas of this unique corner of nature are precisely these coniferous trees, and black pine, as it turned out, has adapted better than all other species to difficult conditions - moving sands, salty spray sea water and at the same time, it tolerates insufficient moisture equally steadfastly.

Black pine - Mediterranean look. It became popular in forestry in late XIX century thanks to the British gardener C. Lawson, who in 1835 proposed using this tree in landscaping. The plant has a number of advantages: hardy, frost-resistant and decorative, grows quickly. Foresters also had hopes that the tree could be used as a material for construction work. But they were not justified, since the wood of black pine is less durable than that of its closest relative Scots pine, and is knotty. The species is quite variable. There are eight known subspecies, which can be divided into eastern and western. Although both have long needles, up to 16 cm, thick and dense, there are significant differences between them. In the eastern ones, growing naturally in Austria, Greece, Crimea, Turkey and the Balkans, the needles are strong and rigid, usually up to 2 mm thick, and do not fall off for 4-7 years. The cells have very thick cell walls, which gives the leaves special strength. In the western subspecies, whose homeland is Italy, Corsica, Spain, and the Atlas Mountains of North-West Africa, the needles, on the contrary, are very flexible and thin, from 0.8 to 1.5 mm thick, and are replaced every 2-4 years. Eastern subspecies are more frost-resistant and can tolerate winter cold down to -30 °C, western subspecies - only up to -20 °C. In addition, subspecies also differ in the size and color of the cones, as well as the color of the bark.

Seed productivity in all subspecies is low. The cones take a long time to ripen, about 2.5 years. Immature cones, green and tightly sealed, adorn trees and look very decorative. Gradually they turn brown and after this period they open, and their contents - seeds and nuts - spill out onto the ground. Black pine is also popular in middle lane Russia, where it is successfully used in landscape design. The only condition that must be met when growing is to provide it with an open sunny place in the garden. Gardeners brought out several decorative varieties and forms, one of which is f. dad is compact and short (her height does not exceed 3 m). In general, depending on growing conditions, this tree grows up to 30 m, and sometimes more.
