Tank camouflage. Camouflage in World of Tanks: practical application

In the previous article, we looked in detail at what principles the game mechanics of camouflage (and detection) are based on and how they work. However, this was only a theory, and in this article we will look at the practical side of the issue - the use of camouflage and ways to increase the stealth of tanks.

The visibility of tanks depends on several parameters, which can be divided into “external” and “internal”. “External” factors include the presence of vegetation along the line of sight of the enemy tank, the distance to the bushes/trees at the time of the shot, and the distance to the enemy. The “internal” ones include the class of equipment, the caliber of the gun, the presence of camouflage or camouflage net, and the crew’s possession of the “Camouflage” skill. Let's consider each factor separately.

Distance to bushes/trees at the time of the shot

At the moment of firing, the overall camouflage factor of the tank decreases depending on the caliber of the gun; this rule also works in cases where the tank is located behind vegetation. However, there is one trick here: the camouflage coefficient of a bush or tree remains unchanged if the firing tank is at a distance of 15 meters or more from it.

Therefore, if you want to remain invisible, move 15 meters away from the bushes and calmly attack the enemies. True, at such a distance the bushes lose transparency, so you will only have to navigate along the contour of the glowing enemy tank.

Gun caliber

A simple rule is true for all classes of equipment: the larger the caliber of the gun, the more the tank’s stealth coefficient at the moment of firing decreases. For the same vehicle with different guns, the camouflage coefficient can change by 2%. Therefore, for example, the American light tank T49 on a 90 mm gun will be less noticeable than on a 152 mm high explosive. However, this is one factor that cannot be changed on most tanks without losing firepower.

Availability of camouflage

Camouflage gives a constant bonus to stealth, which depends on the vehicle class: for tank destroyers - +4%, for tank destroyers and artillery tanks - +3%, and for tank destroyers and artillery destroyers - only +2%. Therefore, applying camouflage to tank destroyers, tank destroyers and tank destroyers has a very noticeable effect: the detection distance of tanks is reduced by 7 - 20 meters, camouflage can also compensate for the enemy’s “Radio Interception” and “Eagle Eye” perks.

And for heavy tanks and artillery camouflage has more of a decorative value. Here the caliber of the gun makes its own adjustments - the bonus from camouflage can be completely lost at the moment of firing.

So for tank destroyers and tank destroyers, the use of camouflage is mandatory, for tank destroyers it is very desirable, and for tank destroyers and artillery destroyers it makes virtually no sense.

Application of a camouflage net

The camouflage net gives a serious bonus to stealth, but only works on a stationary tank (3 seconds after stopping). The camouflage coefficient depends on the class of equipment: for tank destroyers - an increase of 15%, for tank destroyers and tank destroyers - an increase of 10%, and for artillery destroyers and tank destroyers - an increase of only 5%. These bonuses are quite considerable, but they can only be realized on “sniper” tank destroyers that conduct battles in the bushes, and on “passive fireflies” (which, together with stereo tubes, carry out LBZ). You can, of course, install a masknet on some STs (for example, on Panther), but only Not large number players with great patience and perseverance.

So it makes sense to use a camouflage network on some tank destroyers (especially on turret-mounted waffentragers with their high base stealth) and on a limited number of tanks and tank destroyers, but for tank destroyers this module is useless. You can also often find a network on artillery self-propelled guns, but this is more likely out of desperation - for this class of equipment, especially with open wheelhouses, few interesting modules are provided, and the third slot often remains empty.

Crew perk “Disguise”

The “Disguise” skill is a rather controversial and difficult thing. This perk can provide a very significant increase to the tank's base stealth coefficient, but there are a number of caveats.

Firstly, upgrading the perk makes sense for vehicles with a high base stealth coefficient - over 12.5%. Such vehicles include all light tanks, most tank destroyers and artillery self-propelled guns, and a lot of STs (with the exception of “barn” vehicles with large dimensions). Moreover, in the case of LT, the stealth coefficient remains the same at rest and in motion, so for them the “Camouflage” perk gives the maximum bonus. For tanks with a lower base camouflage coefficient - all tank destroyers, many large tank destroyers and large tank destroyers - it is better to level up the more important crew skills first, and leave camouflage for later.

Secondly, the bonus depends on how many crew members have the skill. The minimum bonus is 1.79 if two crew members have the skill (100%), the maximum bonus is achieved if six crew members have the perk. So it’s more profitable to pump out this perk from as many people as possible more crew members.

Finally, thirdly, the bonus from the “Camouflage” skill depends on the presence of the “Combat Brotherhood” skill, the “Improved Ventilation” module, the use of an additional ration, and on how proficient the tank commander is in his main specialty. The maximum bonus is 1.89 with a 100% commander, the presence of “Combat Brotherhood” for all crew members (of which there must be at least six), with ventilation and rations.

Conclusion

All this information is enough to draw a few simple conclusions about camouflage:

  • On all types of equipment, shoot at a distance of 15 meters or more behind a bush or tree;
  • For tank destroyers, it is mandatory to use camouflage and have the “Camouflage” skill among the crew members; for “bush” tank destroyers, it makes sense to have a camouflage net;
  • For LT and ST, camouflage and the “Camouflage” perk are very desirable, although in the case of ST, one should proceed from the base camouflage coefficient of the vehicle;
  • For TTs and artillery self-propelled guns, camouflage, camouflage nets and the “camouflage” skill do not matter; it is better to focus efforts on increasing the firepower of these vehicles.

Camouflage is one of the most important elements of game mechanics in World of Tanks. It is advisable for every player to understand this topic for two reasons:

  • you need to understand how to act correctly in order to be able to detect the enemy before he detects you;
  • know how to properly hide while avoiding backlight.

We suggest you familiarize yourself with the main nuances associated with camouflage in order to take the initiative in battle and get the right to the first shot.

Review is an integral part of the topic of camouflage. It is this that influences the distance from which the car will be detected.

An overview of each vehicle is displayed in meters and is indicated in the tank's performance characteristics.

In battle, the player sees not only those enemies that he personally discovered, but also those discovered by his allies. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between two concepts:

The self-propelled gun in the artillery sight sees detected enemies at any distance.

You can increase your review rate in the following ways:

  1. Equipment installation: coated optics+10%, stereo tube +25%, improved ventilation +2,15%.
  2. Learning skills. Commander - eagle eye +2%. Radio operator - radio interception + 3%. For the entire crew - combat brotherhood +2.15%.
  3. Equipment. National dish+10% to crew skills will add +4.3% to vision.

If the tank’s visibility, taking into account the effects of the crew’s skills, equipment and equipment, exceeds 445 meters, then all subsequent meters will be used to unmask the enemy, that is, they will facilitate the detection of camouflaged enemies.

How detection occurs

In battle, each tank sends rays invisible to our eyes in the direction of the rest of the equipment located within the viewing radius of the performance characteristics of your vehicle.

If the beam of your tank reaches the overall (blue) point of the enemy, then it is detected. Using the IS tank as an example, consider the position of these points:

Each tank has two vantage points, which can be used to detect enemy vehicles. That is, there is no need to move out from behind the cover with your entire body; it is enough to show only the following points shown in the figure:

These viewpoints work in turn, after a certain time period - tick. The time between ticks depends on the distance between the vehicles and ranges from 0.1 to 2 seconds. The view from these points is assumed to be a sphere with a fixed radius, so the machine sees equally in all directions from each view point.

The overall points on the vehicle are designed to provide other players with the opportunity to illuminate your vehicle (these points project visibility rays), and at the same time, observation points are designed to detect enemy tanks (viewing rays emanate from them, which are equal to the maximum viewing radius according to the specified performance characteristics of your vehicle).

How long is detected equipment visible?

After the moment of intersection of the observation points of one tank and the line of sight of another, the second tank will be in the light for up to 10 seconds, even if the visual contact between the line of sight with the view points is interrupted. Therefore, if an illuminated car drives into a shelter, it will still not immediately disappear from sight. Also, tanks will remain exposed if the tank transmitting intelligence data received a shell shock to the commander or was destroyed.

Disguise

Camouflage is the ability of every vehicle to remain unnoticed by the enemy. The lack of camouflage would lead to the fact that players would constantly see each other within the tank's viewing distance, and the battle could become a kind of shooting gallery. However, in WoT there are many nuances, in addition to overview, that affect the likelihood of finding a vehicle.

Aspects affecting camouflage. When is a tank considered invisible?

Size. Each machine has own coefficient stealth, which primarily depends on the dimensions.
Heavy tanks, like , or heavily armored ones have minimum values, and small vehicles with a low silhouette, like , have maximum values.

The caliber of the gun and its dimensions affect the drop in camouflage after a shot:

Vegetation. Elements of our environment natural environment: bushes, tall grass, forest and trees provide an excellent bonus to the vehicle's stealth. It is important to hide the body from the enemy, since there are dimensional points at which detection occurs.

Caterpillars or the muzzle of a gun peeking out from behind a building/bush will not affect your visibility in any way, because there are no marker points there.

At a distance of up to 15 meters, the vegetation becomes transparent to the hiding player. Thus, he sees through the bush, but his enemies cannot.

For example, if the distance to the nearest point of a tree you have covered does not exceed 15 meters, then this tree will become transparent in the sniper scope. If the distance to the center of the tree exceeds 15 meters, then the tree itself will still remain transparent in the sight, but for viewing rays it will be opaque.

How to hide in the bushes correctly

The bush in the game is a translucent object that increases the camouflage of the equipment hidden behind it. When an enemy tank approaches the base of the bush at a distance not exceeding 15 meters, the bush will become transparent for him and he will also be able to aim through it without obstacles.

The size of the bush is important: large tanks standing in low bushes will be visible from the tower. The visibility will not be affected in any way by the depth of entry into the bush; it is enough to even stand behind it. The only thing you need to remember is the distance of 15 meters. To make sure that the tank is securely hidden behind a bush, it is enough to turn the camera towards the intended enemy to see yourself from the side through his eyes.

To achieve maximum effectiveness from camouflage using a bush, you can position yourself behind it at a short distance, but so that the bush does not become transparent for you in a sniper scope and shoot at the enemy solely by his silhouette. In this situation, the likelihood of detection is minimized.

Does the stealth effect increase if you hide behind several bushes next to each other?

After the shot is fired, the stealth of the vehicle is no longer affected by all bushes located in the area of 15 meters, with the exception of one, which gives the largest bonus to the stealth of the vehicle. This mechanic applies to each line of sight from the vantage point of the detecting tank to the overall point of the one firing.

Let's consider an example for a tank located among a large number of bushes. Some of them are within 15 meters of your tank, while others are further away. One enemy tank comes at you from each side. After your first shot the situation looks like this:

  1. There are only 6 rays of visibility for each dimensional point, so for each ray that comes from the first enemy vehicle, the densest bush is determined (it is from this that visibility will be calculated).
  2. The same situation repeats with the second enemy.

In this case, both points are performed simultaneously. When one of the enemies detects you, the second one will immediately know about it (if the communication range allows you to report the detection). All bushes located beyond 15 meters will enhance the effect of the bush chosen to calculate camouflage at the time the shot was fired.

Bushes in the game are distinguished between dense and sparse, and the bonus to stealth directly depends on this. The maximum effect can be obtained from 4 dense bushes.

Actions. When stationary and not opening fire on the enemy, the vehicle does not receive penalties to camouflage. While on the move, the stealth coefficient of a vehicle decreases:

  • by 75% for medium tanks;
  • by 60% for anti-tank self-propelled guns;
  • by 50% for heavy tanks and artillery.

Values are approximate, in some cases exceptions are possible.

The shot significantly reduces the tank's stealth level.
This parameter depends on the caliber of the gun and the availability muzzle brake- it further reduces the stealth factor when shooting.
Before the shot:

After the shot:

Firing unmasks the vehicle and the vegetation surrounding you also partially loses its camouflage effect.

Fire. A burning car will glow across the entire map, like christmas tree.

Stealth before arson:

After the arson:

It also depends on the class of equipment.

X-ray. Regardless of your actions, at a distance of 50 meters, players see each other in any case.

How to increase vehicle camouflage

There are several options for increasing camouflage directly outside of combat.

Crew skills

Learn the Disguise skill for all tankers. This perk will increase the stealth of the vehicle by approximately 1.8 times (depending on the number of crew members). The skill works constantly: when moving, standing still and while shooting, which significantly reduces the radius of visibility of the tank. With upgraded camouflage, the enemy will need to get much closer to detect your tank.

The effect of the skill is not reduced when the crew is stunned.

Also, a small bonus will be given by studying “ Combat brotherhood».

How is the camouflage of a stationary vehicle activated?

On all vehicles, with the exception of light tanks (from level 4 and above), visibility in motion is twice as high as visibility in a stationary state.

How the invisibility of vehicles in motion is reduced:

After stopping, the level of the “Disguise” perk doubles.

Camouflage

Applying camouflage will provide a permanent bonus to the overall stealth coefficient depending on the vehicle class:

  • +2% for tanks and self-propelled guns;
  • +3% for ST and LT;
  • +4% for tank destroyers.

Other

Improved ventilation national dish and pre-battle instructions can also slightly increase camouflage.

All of the camouflage effects listed above are cumulative.

As a result, the maximum level of disguise looks like this:

Brief summary

Using the SU-152 as an example, let’s see the difference between a tank destroyer with absolutely no bonuses and with improved stealth after firing:

The distance required for the enemy to detect an uprooted vehicle is 23 meters higher. Boom equipment and pre-battle instructions will add a couple of meters.

Comparison of the distance for exposure while stationary without firing:

The difference is 123 meters on a perfectly translucent straight line. This will at least give you the right to the first shot, the opportunity to inflict more damage in battle and increase survivability, and, accordingly, the chance of victory. Therefore, stealth must be upgraded.

The bush is a translucent structure that does not transmit the above-described rays. If you approach the center of the bush at a distance of less than 15 meters, it becomes completely transparent to you and you can look through it (your rays pass through it without obstacles).

How to hide in the bushes?

The size of the bush affects camouflage; tall tanks in low bushes will be visible from the tower. The degree of immersion in the bush does not affect, that is, you can stand not in the bush itself, but behind the bush, the main thing is to remember about 15 meters. To make sure that the bush hid you, turn the camera the way the intended enemy sees you. Your silhouette should be completely outlined in gray.

What is "camouflage"?

Disguise- This is the ability of a tank to remain invisible to the enemy. It helps you attack the enemy with impunity or hide from him, so that he will not see you. They camouflage tanks to hide from enemy vision.

How long is a detected target visible?

After the visibility rays intersect with the tank's body and it becomes visible, the tank will remain visible from 3 to 10 seconds (the time is chosen randomly), even if the rays no longer reach it. (A tank that drives behind a house will not disappear immediately. The illuminated tanks will be visible for some time after the death of the scout.)

What is the visibility of the tank?

The review indicated in the technical specifications is a review of a 100% crew with installed coated optics (as well as the rate of fire is indicated with a rammer).

Is detection enhanced when viewing beyond 445m?

Yes. You will not be able to see further than 445m, but your skill in detecting camouflaged targets will improve.
Example:
On one side is a Panther tank, on the other side is a Leopard tank. Both tanks are in top configuration, with 100% crew, but without the Masking skill. The leopard approaches in first gear.
A panther without a stereo scope detects a leopard from 345m.
A panther with a stereo scope detects a leopard from 430m.
As you can see from this example, a review of more than 445m also makes sense.

How often does visibility check occur?

The frequency of visibility checks is as follows:
within a radius of 50 meters - on each tick (0.1 s)
within a radius of 150 meters - twice per second (0.5s between ticks)
within a radius of 270 meters - once per second
within a radius of 445 meters (maximum radius of unmediated visibility) - once every two seconds (2.0 s between checks)

When is a tank considered invisible?

The tank is considered invisible if there are bushes/trees/houses/mountains/etc. completely hide your silhouette (blue dimensional dots) from ALL opponents whose rays reach you.
True, it is worth noting that bushes and trees, at certain distances, cease to camouflage the tank, and at a distance of less than 50 meters, to simplify the system, it is assumed that tanks see each other in any case.

This means that at a distance of less than 50m, the tanks turn on “X-ray”, which sees through any obstacles.

How is detection done in the game?

From a tank within the visibility radius specified in the technical characteristics, invisible rays are sent to all enemy tanks that fall within this radius. There are 6 rays going into one tank at once. The tank is considered visible if at least one beam reaches the overall (blue) point. Now the “body” of the tank in the visibility system will look like this (all blue dots are static relative to the geometric center of the tank)

All tanks have 2 viewpoints

Viewpoints do not work simultaneously, but one at a time, every tick. The first tick is with one “eye”, the second tick is with the second “eye”, the third tick is again with the first “eye”. The time between ticks ranges from 0.1 seconds to 2 seconds, depending on the distance between the tanks.
The view for both points is considered to be a ball with a fixed radius, in other words: The Tank sees in all directions/directions equally well from both view points. The maximum detection radius is 445m, while enemy tanks illuminated by allies can be seen at distances of up to 700m. Artillery, in artillery mode, sees illuminated targets at any distance.
UPD: According to Serb, the engine does not guarantee visibility greater than 445m. That is, you can still see the enemy at a distance of up to 700m, but it is not a fact that this will be the case on all maps and in all situations.

How to hide in several bushes at once?

The central beam is the beam to the highest point of the tank (roof of the tower, etc.), so in this case we should assume that all the bushes are higher than the height of the tank:

In the picture, if anything, there are not four tanks, these are 4 possible positions of one tank. If each image showed a different tank, then everyone would see you, thanks to radio communications.

Does the effect of camouflage increase immediately behind several bushes in a row, standing one after another?

When a tank fires, its visibility is no longer affected by all bushes within a radius of 15 m, except for the bush that has the greatest coefficient of influence on the tank's stealth - this happens for each line of sight from the viewpoint of the enemy tank to the overall point of the firing tank.
Example:
You are standing in a large number of bushes, some within a 15m radius of you, some beyond 15m. There are two enemies to the left and right. At the moment of the shot the following happens.
1. For each ray of visibility that the first enemy fires at you (6 rays in total, one for each dimensional point), the densest bush is determined and visibility is calculated. Whether the enemy saw you or not.
2. The same is done for the second opponent.
Points 1 and 2 are calculated simultaneously. And if at least one of the two enemies managed to see you, then they will both see you (if the walkie-talkie allows it).
In this case, all bushes located beyond 15m will simply enhance the influence of the bush that was chosen to calculate camouflage at the time of the shot. So a series of 2 bushes within 15m will work like 1 bush, and a series of 2 bushes, partially located beyond 15m, will give high stealth, but will deprive you of the opportunity to see the enemy yourself.
The player is faced with a choice:

Or watch the enemy yourself and, after shooting, there is a high probability of revealing yourself. Or be well camouflaged, but without the help of allies, completely blind. Therefore, a competent light (scout) is an important part of the game.

How to hide in the forest?

Trees are camouflaged only in a vertical position (both the trunk and crown of the tree camouflage the equipment). Camouflage in the forest has the same principle as camouflage in several bushes. If the lower part of the trunk is too exposed, then a large number of trees will be needed for camouflage, as in the example at the beginning of the article.

The fallen tree, for now, does not disguise the tank in any way (consider that this tree is no longer there).

How to remain invisible in the forest and bushes for as long as possible?

Shot (in to a greater extent) and body movement (to a lesser extent, including moving in place) unmasks your tank for the next 5 seconds, so to achieve the maximum effect you need not move the body (the turret is possible) and do not shoot at the enemy. You can also use a camouflage net and upgrade the corresponding skill from your crew members.

How does a camouflage network work?

The effect of the camouflage net does not work while the tank is moving and for 3 seconds after it stops. For the camouflage net to turn on, you need to not move the tank's body for 3 seconds; any subsequent movement will again require 3 seconds of rest to turn on the camouflage net.

How does the disguise skill work?

Skill disguise always works! And standing and on the move and during shooting. It reduces the visibility radius of the tank. That is, if an enemy with a visibility radius of 400 meters is looking at you, and you have upgraded this skill, then detection will not be at 400 meters, but at a closer distance. Also, if you are hidden in the bushes, this skill allows you to reduce the chance of being noticed after being shot.

What movements affect camouflage?

Movement of the tank hull (in any direction), as well as rotation of the tank in place, reduces camouflage by 2 times. Turret movement does not affect camouflage in any way and does NOT cancel the effects of the camouflage net.

Does movement speed affect the visibility of a tank?

No. A slow tank will be as noticeable as a fast one.

When is the camouflage of a stationary tank activated?
For all vehicles (except top-end light vehicles), visibility while moving is 2 times higher than visibility while standing. As soon as the tank stops, the camouflage skill, unlike the camouflage net, immediately increases by 2 times.

Does the effect of the camouflage net and the camouflage skill stack?

Yes, it adds up.

Question: Did I understand correctly, the stealth of a tank can be 125? those. 100% crew + 25% grid?

Answer: Let the tank's standard stealth be 20%. Then the grid will give EMNIP + 25% (then the grid will be changed), totaling 20% * 1.25 = 25%. If the crew's camouflage skill is 0%, stealth will be 12.5%. At 100% skill - 25%. Then the visibility is 87.5% and 75%, respectively.

Is it necessary to hide a tank's gun?

No, there is no need to hide the weapon. If only it peeks out from the bushes (or from behind the house), the tank is considered invisible.

Does detection during firing depend on the caliber of the gun?

Yes, than larger caliber, the higher the chance (the distance from which the tank will be guaranteed to be unmasked) of detection at the moment of the shot.

The shot fires more (than movement) due to the fact that the opacity of the bushes within a 15m radius after the shot decreases (in addition to the actual benefit to the visibility of the car). This mechanism has been working since the summer, only the drop in stealth has been increased (in patch 0.6.2.7 the visibility of all guns when fired has been increased by 20%).

The presence of a muzzle brake also plays an important role (with it the tank is much more noticeable when shooting).

Does detection during firing depend on the type of projectile?

No, all types of shells, when fired from one gun, unmask the same way.

Class bonuses and their impact on tank camouflage in World of Tanks

Tank destroyers have an additional camouflage bonus that helps them remain invisible at closer ranges. However, this does not mean that all tanks should be less noticeable than tanks. The visibility of a PT is determined in the same way as other equipment, but with the same height (and width) the PT will be less noticeable. Its maximum camouflage is not 125%, but a little more (As far as I remember, PTs receive about + 20-25% to camouflage and the output is 145-150%).
In patch 0.6.2.7, the visibility of heavy tanks of levels 8, 9, 10 has been increased by 25% (both standing and on the move).
In the same patch, the visibility of top (level 4) LTs on the move became as low as when standing.

Question: Is it true that now the camouflage of a leopard in motion is higher than in standing position?

Answer: No. Its camouflage when moving and standing is the same - this is a specific feature of all top light tanks.

Is there a difference between tanks of the same class? What is "visibility"?

Yes, the size of the tank affects overall visibility. Each tank has its own visibility coefficients, and it is these coefficients that are changed by the “Camouflage” skill and the “Camouflage Network” module. 100% visibility means that the tank will be visible at the maximum viewing range. 0% visibility means that the tank will only be visible from 50m.

Question: does the camouflage skill affect camouflage only after stopping or while moving?

Answer: On the move too. It’s just that the basic visibility value is higher there. Roughly, if passport stealth is 20, then with 100% skill of the crew at a standstill there will be 20, while moving 10. And if the skill is 0%, then at a standstill 10, while moving 5

Examples: During the test, a bison with a crew of 75% detected the MS-1 at a distance of 284m, and the German and American counterparts from 304m. Another test showed that there are no differences between the Refrigerator (Su-14) with and without camouflage. In general, tests have shown that the visibility of a tank is tied to its dimensions, or more precisely to its height.

Calculation of tank camouflage in World of Tanks using an example

If a tank has a stealth coefficient of 20%, then its stealth will be equal to:

5% - On the go
6.25% - On the move +25% camouflage
7.5% - On the move +50% camouflage
8.75% - Nahodu +75% disguise
10% - On the move +100% camouflage

10% - Standing
12.5% - Standing +25% disguise
15% - Standing +50% disguise
17.5% - Standing +75% disguise
20% - Standing +100% disguise

12.5% - Standing + mesh
15.625% - Standing + mesh +25% disguise
18.75% - Standing + mesh + 50% disguise
21.875% - Standing + mesh +75% disguise
25% - Standing + mesh +100% disguise

Important! Different players have different modules, different crews and different damage. In battle, the game view of tanks ranges from 50 to 650 meters. Therefore, in one case you may not be seen in a field at 100m, but in another you may be found in the bushes at 300m!

  • Forward

The ability to properly tank on your tank is certainly very important and useful. But in order to avoid taking damage on the battlefield, it is much more profitable to simply avoid being caught in the glare and in the sights of enemy tanks. To do this, you need to know and understand how camouflage works. This is a very big topic.

Let's look at the basic principles of how camouflage works in the field

The first thing every player in the world of tanks should know is that a tank sees in all directions equally. It doesn't matter which way the tower is facing, which way you're looking. The illumination occurs in a circle with the radius of your view.

Secondly, in order for you to be illuminated, the dimensional points that are located on the hull of your tank and its turret must be caught in the light. This is precisely why sometimes enemy tracks stick out from behind a bush, or you look at the enemy from under the carriage and see only his tracks, and suddenly he disappears from the light. Why is this? Yes, because at this moment you cannot illuminate its overall points.

Third, regarding camouflage. In World of Tanks, there are only 2 states of a tank: either it is moving or it is standing still. Rotating the turret or barrel for tank destroyers is not considered movement. But if you turn the body even a centimeter, or if you move in first gear, the server considers this as movement, and the camouflage coefficient decreases. The only exception from this rule these are all light tanks. There is no such fine for them. Whether in motion or standing, they have the same detection (light) coefficient.

Fourth. The invisibility of a tank directly depends on its height. This is considered from the ground to the very extreme point towers. The higher your tank, the less camouflage it has, and the greater the distance it will be detected by the enemy. For tall tanks, it doesn't make much difference whether they move or stand still. Studies were carried out with different tanks German branch, they all shone from approximately the same distance equal to 430-440 m. But for tanks with a low profile (T-54, T-62A, leopard prototype) things are a little different. They were illuminated in an open field much later - at a distance of 220-230 meters. And when moving, the light appeared 20-25 meters earlier. From this we can conclude that on tanks with a low profile it is much more profitable to stand in your position until the last.

Operation of the camouflage network. On average, the exposure distance when activated is reduced by 40 meters. A very useful and not a small bonus.

Bushes - best place for camouflage World of Tanks

Most best way do not take damage if you are a firefly and not only - do not get caught in the glare. Now we will talk in more detail about the most interesting and most accessible camouflage element on any map - bushes.

Bushes are not completely transparent to light rays, but simply weaken their effect and reduce the light distance. The lower the profile of the tank, the better the bushes hide it.

There is a difference between whether you are standing behind a bush or moving, and it is a very interesting pattern. The test was carried out on the T-54. When moving behind the bushes, the tank was detected from 150 meters, and in a static position from 120 m. Just standing in a field without bushes, moving back and forth, the tank was detected from 350 meters, and in a static position from 320 m. It turns out that in both cases the difference was 30 meters.

For the game, it doesn’t make much difference at what speed you are rushing behind a bush, just spinning, or turning slightly - in this case, you move and reduce your camouflage.

How does a camouflage net affect a tank standing in the bushes? With a camouflage net, a T-54 standing in the bushes was exposed from a distance of 80 meters. And without net masks, the distance was 120m. That is, the gain is approximately 40 meters. Standing in an open field with a net, the light was at 280 m, without a net 320 m. Tall tanks like E-100 from the bushes glowed at a distance of about 210-220 meters, that is, 2 times more than low-profile ones. It doesn’t matter what class of equipment it is - TT, ST, artillery or tank destroyer; if you have a tall tank, then it will be difficult for you to hide it even behind bushes. Also, for tall cars there is no significant difference whether they stand quietly behind a bush or move; the spread in the range of exposure will be only 10-20 m.

Shooting through the bushes. What we found out after the tests.

1. The level of light from shooting does not depend at all on what type of shells you use: armor-piercing, cumulative, high explosives. The illumination will occur in the same way.

2. There is a 15 meter rule - when you move about 15 meters away from the bush, it becomes opaque again and you disappear from the light. You need to move a couple of meters away from the bush, because the visibility in your sight comes from the turret, and there are marker points on the body that are located much further than the turret and stick out. This rule only works over long distances. Using the T-54 and E-50 as an example, the distance at which it operates this rule, amounted to 220 meters. What does this knowledge give us? Firstly, there is no need to move more than 15 meters away from the bush; most importantly, you must monitor the distance between you and the enemy. Take into account the level of visibility of your equipment and the level of visibility of the enemy. By applying this rule wisely, you will be able to be less exposed to light and correctly assess the situation.

If you like to play with fireflies, in order to light up the enemy, you just need to close the distance and try to get him to shoot.

3. It doesn’t matter how far the tanks are from the bushes; when there is light, only the distance between the opponents is important. This is very useful knowledge. Even if you are standing in the bushes, surrounded by trees, and the enemy drives past you, the distance becomes critical - the bushes will not save you.

4. The masking effect of two bushes on the same line is additive.

5. One bush and one fallen tree - the camouflage effect does not stack.

6. Two fallen trees count as one cloaking object. The last three points with information from WoT developers.

7. To increase camouflage, use camouflage from the developers.

Conifers and deciduous trees. What's better for camouflage?

Previously, once upon a time, trees in World of Tanks had a camouflage property only while they were intact. As soon as the tree was felled, it ceased to camouflage. You can consider it as if it never happened. But recently the server began to identify fallen trees as camouflage. However, it should be noted that only one downed tree is taken into account when calculating visibility. So it won’t be possible to create a very strong masking obstacle from a bunch of trees.

But even with one tree, players had a lot of controversial situations. Many people simply didn’t understand why they were glowing, it seemed like they had knocked down a tree and hid well, nothing was sticking out, but they still glowed on the floor of the map. How can this be, what happened - the developers were simply inundated with questions on this topic.

On the official forum they were asked if there is a difference between coniferous and deciduous trees, do they camouflage the same? The developers said there is no difference. The only thing that needs to be taken into account is the size of the crown so that the tank does not protrude due to the foliage. If the crown is small, the tank may be caught in light at certain angles and be detected by the enemy.

Comparison of the properties of coniferous and deciduous trees.

When testing a coniferous tree, it turned out that the tank was detected from the same distance as the tank located behind the bushes. That is, we can say that there is no difference between coniferous trees and bushes. Then deciduous trees were tested, and then a little surprise awaited us. Several deciduous trees were tested from different angles, and it turned out that deciduous trees hide worse than bushes and coniferous trees. Standing on a T-54 with an activated camouflage network behind a bush or coniferous tree, the detection distance was 80 meters. Moving, both here and there the detection distance was 150 meters. To be sure of the results, the test was carried out on a second tank. The same data were obtained for the E-50. Behind a deciduous tree, for a stationary T-54, the detection range was 130 meters. This is 50 meters more than behind a bush or coniferous tree. While moving behind a deciduous tree, the detection distance was 200-210 meters, that is, again 50-60 meters worse.

From this we can conclude that bushes and coniferous trees camouflage equally, but deciduous trees have a much worse camouflage effect. Therefore, if you have a choice of which tree to hide behind, a coniferous or a deciduous one, choose a coniferous one without hesitation!

Detection and camouflage are the most important elements of the game mechanics of World of Tanks. Both aspects are extremely important for successful play on any combat vehicle. Thanks to the site, you will know how to be the first to detect the enemy and effectively hide from him.

Part 1: Review and discovery. Keep your eyes open.

The visibility of all tanks is calculated in meters and is indicated in the characteristics of each vehicle. Please note that the vision value is indicated for a crew with 100% of the main specialty. That is, if your crew has 75% of the main specialty, then the view will be less than what you see in the hangar.

One of the game conventions is the fact that on the battlefield the player sees not only those opponents whom he discovered on his own, but also those whom the team “spotted.” From here it is necessary to distinguish two concepts: detection range and visibility range.

Detection range – the maximum distance at which the player’s tank can detect an opponent. It does not exceed 445 meters. If, taking into account the skills of the crew, equipment and equipment, the value is above 445 meters, then the extra meters turn into a demasking bonus, which helps to detect hidden opponents.

Visibility range – the maximum distance at which the game engine draws allied tanks and enemy tanks they detect. The mechanics of the game include a circle with a radius of 565 meters around the tank. The exception is the self-propelled gun art sight, where tanks - if they are visible to allies - are displayed throughout the map.

There are several ways to increase the tank's base vision and enemy detection range.

The vehicle must be equipped with a turret with maximum visibility.

Since the commander is responsible for overseeing the battlefield, his primary specialty must be upgraded to 100%. The commander's injury reduces visibility.

Commander skill Eagle Eye (+2% to vision, +20% with broken surveillance devices), radio operator skill Radio Interception (+3% to vision), skill of all crew members Combat Brotherhood will give an increase to the review.

Installation of equipment Coated optics and Stereo tube. The first will give a permanent increase of +10% to your review. The second gives a +25% increase in vision after 3 seconds in a stationary position. When both modules are installed on a tank, the effects are not cumulative, but can work separately.

Equipment Installation Improved ventilation increases visibility, as do other tank features.

Using equipment that gives a +10% increase to the crew’s basic skill for one battle.

Part 2. Camouflage and camouflage. Shooting bushes

Camouflage is the ability of equipment to remain unnoticed on the ground. If there were no camouflage mechanics in the game, then rivals, provided there was direct visibility, would detect each other at the maximum viewing distance, but no further than 445 meters. However, there are several other factors that influence technology detection.

Aspects affecting camouflage

X-ray. At a distance of 50 meters, opponents illuminate each other even if there are buildings between them. They can hear each other conditionally.

Equipment size. Each tank in World of Tanks has a stealth coefficient depending on its size. The larger the car, for example the German TT Maus, the lower the coefficient will be. They have the maximum coefficient combat vehicles with a squat silhouette, such as Object 416, AMX ELC bis.

Actions. If a tank does not move or shoot, it does not have a penalty to camouflage. While on the move, the stealth coefficient is reduced to 75% for medium tanks, to 60% for tank destroyers, and to 50% for heavy tanks and self-propelled guns. Light tanks have no movement penalty. Their coefficient is always the same. This is a class feature of the LT (except AMX 40 and Valentine). Shooting almost completely reduces the level of stealth. The degree of unmasking depends on the caliber of the gun and the presence of a muzzle brake

Vegetation. Bushes, trees (whole and fallen), and tall grass provide a bonus to camouflage. At a distance of up to 15 meters, the flora becomes “transparent” to the one hiding in it, and impenetrable to the enemy. At the moment of the shot, all vegetation within 15 meters loses its properties, that is, the shot is a strong unmasking factor. Therefore, it is useful to drive a little further than 15 meters before shooting. You will have to shoot blindly from memory, but if you get used to it, you can safely shoot your opponent, turning into a shooting bush.

Dimensional and observation points. How does this work

Dimensional and vantage points invisible to the player help the server determine who can see whom in battle. If you imagine that the tank is a brick, then the dimensional points are located in the center of each side of the imaginary brick (length, height, width). There is another point at the base of the trunk. Observation points are located at the base of the trunk and at the site of observation devices. Usually this is the commander's cupola and driver's instruments.

Detection check beams emanate from the vantage points of all tanks in battle at a certain frequency. To maintain camouflage, it is necessary to hide the dimensional points behind various obstacles on the map. If a tank barrel or part of a caterpillar sticks out from behind a bush, then detection will not occur, since there are no marker points on them.

Several ways to improve camouflage

Crew members skill Camouflage. It is necessary to upgrade all tankers, otherwise the effectiveness will be low.

Equipment installation Camouflage network. Allows you to significantly increase your camouflage after stopping and 3 seconds of preparation. The bonus depends on the vehicle class. For tank destroyers it is the largest - +15%, for light and medium tanks it is +10%, and the smallest bonus is +5% for heavy tanks and self-propelled guns.

Applying camouflage, in addition to improving appearance, will give an increase in the camouflage coefficient by 2-4%, depending on the class of equipment. Camouflage can be purchased both for gold (forever) and for in-game credits for 7 or 30 days.

Leveling up the commander's skill Sixth Sense. It will not add camouflage, but it will allow you to realize in time that the enemy sees you. This information will save your tank from destruction more than once.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Most World of Tanks participants have little understanding of the game's vision and camouflage algorithms. Therefore, they are neglected, considering them dishonest and unworthy. But that's not true. Skillful use of your advantage in optics and knowing how to hide your tank in a bush are very useful. Those who use the characteristics of their combat vehicle as efficiently as possible and know the features of the game often win.
