Thai is spoken by over sixty million people in Thailand, and its dialects are used by millions more in Southwestern China, Laos, Burma and Vietnam. There are four main dialects of the Thai language: central, northeastern, northern and southern, which differ in pronunciation and partly lexically, which does not interfere with people’s communication.
Thais are very polite people. This can be seen not only in their behavior, but also in their speech. For example, in almost every sentence they use the particle “khrap” (or khap, men) and “kha” (women). It is difficult to explain what exactly this means; one can only draw an analogy with the old Russian “-s”: yes, sir, of course, sir, sir. You could say that “snoring” is also “please.” “Snoring” can also be pronounced separately, in which case it will mean agreement (“yes”).
The lifestyle of the island Thais is conveyed by the expressions “Mai Pen Rai” (roughly equivalent to “No problem”) and “Ban Sabai” (a state of carefreeness close to nirvana).
Another thing to understand is masculine and feminine gender. The male “I” is “Phom”, the female “I” is “Chan”.

The most unpleasant thing is that the Thais fully project the main phonetic components of their language into both English and Russian. And the most unpleasant thing about Thai language is its tonal component. Without going into details, we note the main thing: because of this, in many Thai words the last one or even two letters are not pronounced by native speakers (more precisely, they are pronounced completely differently from what we would expect to hear).
That is why it is very difficult to understand a Thai when he meaningfully pronounces Russians or english words . For example, many tourists are stupefied by the phrase in Russian " zatla wake up" (this is how the receptionist says the phrase "breakfast will be in the lobby bar"). Actually, the Thai woman herself always is sincerely surprised, why don’t Russians understand when she speaks Russian, and tries to repeat the same phrase to the tourist, but in English: "Breakfar we beon lobiba" instead of "Breakfast will be on lobby bar".
By the way, Thais understand both Russian and English very poorly by ear, much worse than they speak. Moreover, one cannot speak not only in phrases, but also individual words It is better to repeat slowly and a couple of times. And under no circumstances don't raise your voice- this is a guarantee that the Thai woman will no longer understand you fundamentally. For these very reasons, it is best to keep communication with Thai staff to a minimum, and if necessary, try to show what you need with gestures or write on a piece of paper in English.
And again, without going into details, finish any phrase or word (if there is only one in your phrase) in Thai with a special ending: if you are a man, then “Kap”, if you are a woman, then “Kaa”. When you hear Thai speech, you will immediately understand what endings we are talking about. And yes, when communicating with Thais, you should limit yourself to only a few basic phrases in order to say hello or thank(it’s much nicer when the guest does this in his native language). New to Thailand? Don't try to speak to Thais using extended phrases. Russian-Thai phrasebook, even if they understand you, you will not understand the answer 100%. Those. we use it to denote all the usual things - basic English language and try to talk as much as possible in short phrases (ideally - single words, nouns and gestures)!
How to address Thais?
Many Russian tourists try contact the Thais whatever they want, just not the way everyone else addresses them. For example, several times the following options for addressing maids, porters and waiters popped up: “Hey, Woman”, “Beauty”, “Dear”, “Woman cleaner”, “Garson”, “Boy”, “Friend”, etc. In fact, these calls for Thais are a set of incomprehensible sounds.
To address a man in Thailand, use the simple word "Mr", and to address a woman - "Madam". It’s simple, you don’t need to come up with other options and word forms.
How to say hello, apologize and thank a Thai?
In the pronunciation examples below Thai words in Russian, a colon that follows a vowel signifies a long (longer than usual) sound. For a Russian person, Thai speech resembles singing or, more often, meowing. When you come to Thailand, you will understand what we are talking about.
- Hello - Savatdi: -kaa (-kap);
- Goodbye - Lako:n-kaa (-cap);
- Thank you - Khopunn-kaa (-kap);
- Sorry - Khotkho:t-kaa (-kap);
- Delicious - Aro:y-kaa (-cap);
Actually, these six fairly simple (believe me, among Thai words, these are one of the simplest for our ears and pronunciation) words are quite enough for politeness.
If you have a desire to practice Thai pronunciation phrases in their language, open up big Russian-Thai phrasebook and study!
Russian-English phrasebook for communicating with Thais
The most important phrase among Thais and Russians in English when talking to each other is “OK” (okay). This magic word can replace the question "Is everything okay?" and the answer to it is “Everything is fine” and not only...
And another one of the most necessary phrases while on vacation in Thailand - "NO SPICY" (no spice) or "NO CHILI" (no chili): this means the phrase "WITHOUT SPICES". If you decide to order any dish of Thai or any other Asian cuisine in a cafe or restaurant , be sure to add this phrase after each name (otherwise you will be served food so spicy that you simply will not be able to eat it).

If you are planning to visit Thailand, then you definitely need a Russian-Thai phrasebook that will help you somehow communicate with the Thais.
To begin with, I will tell you a little about the Thai language and its features. Thai is not considered the most difficult language, but it cannot be called simple either. There is no punctuation and plural, the structure of sentences is such that the adjective is written after the noun, the subject is omitted if it is clear from the context, etc.
The alphabet consists of 44 consonants, 32 vowels and 5 tones.
Thai phrasebook - Thai alphabet
Due to the lack of tonality in our language, it is sometimes very difficult to grasp correct sounds in Thai, and therefore it is sometimes difficult to repeat even a simple word. Be prepared that you may not be understood. After all, one word in a different key can have a different meaning.
As I noted above, Thai has 5 keys.
- Normal
- Falling
- Rising and falling
- Rising and middle
- Falling and rising
In addition, there are slang expressions that young people use, as well as phrases that are used only to communicate with royal family. Another feature of the Thai language is that you can always literally translate sentences or specific words. Some words are used for emphasis or emphasis.
Usually, in everyday communication Thais don't pronounce the letter "R", they use "L" instead or simply omit it.
Example:
- Rak, if you read Cancer in Russian, Thais pronounce Lak.
- Krap, if you read Krap in Russian, Thais pronounce Kap.
The above is perhaps the most important information for a tourist to know about the Thai language. Now let's start learning numbers, and then basic expressions.

PublishedAuthorHello, in this article I will publish a Russian-Thai phrasebook, using which you can safely come to Thailand and talk with the locals. I learned many words and phrases while traveling around Thailand. Now I share this knowledge with you. Of course, if you study or print out this Russian-Thai phrasebook, you will be able to explain to the Thai what is required of him. But it’s already difficult to understand what he wants. To do this, you need to practice the Thai language intensively. Try to formulate your sentence correctly so that Thais understand you the first time.
Prefixes for polite pronunciation:
In the Thai language, after almost every word a prefix is inserted, which radically changes the meaning of everything spoken. This prefix adds respect. I advise everyone to pronounce and memorize words immediately with a prefix. It is pronounced differently for men and women. Men should say “kra:p” or, like me, simply “ka:p”. Many sources say that the correct pronunciation of this prefix is “khra:p”, but believe me, living in Thailand, you don’t need to remember it as no one says. I write the way it is actually pronounced so that Thai people can understand you. Women simply say “ka:”, and always drawlingly.
Legend:
A colon after a vowel means its prolongation, for example the word “ka:” will be pronounced drawn out “kaaa”.
I'll start with the simple and most necessary words:
Hello - sa wat di: (and here comes the prefix! And in other words too)
Goodbye - la co:n
Hello - wat di: (no one uses it, but you can use it, don’t forget to add a prefix after these words)
Thank you - ko:pun
Please - karuna:
Sorry - ko:to:d
It's OK— may pen rai (in colloquial speech translated as “don’t care”, you don’t have to use the prefix)

No - may tea (without prefix)
