But the power and value of holiness for us does not lie in the fact that devotees of piety issue instructions: “Read these words, and they, like a spell, will fulfill your desire.” The saints give us an EXAMPLE - contrition for sins, prayer, the feat of life itself. They were the same as us, they were sick in the same way, they suffered in the same way, they sought God in the same way... Yes, but not so - with a pure heart. However, illnesses are not always a punishment for sins. Hieromonk Dmitry (Pershin) writes: “Suffering can have its own purpose, and even a higher one than the fate of the sufferer. God allows Satan to infect Job’s body with leprosy in order to wean Old Testament Israel from the habit of attributing the sorrows of someone to his own sins and, in addition, to reveal the secret and measure of His love, which will be revealed on Calvary. The Holy Fathers pointed out several spiritual causes of human illness. “Do you really say that all illnesses come from sins? Not all, but most. Some happen from carelessness... Illnesses also happen to test us in goodness,” taught St. John Chrysostom. He, remembering history righteous Job, explains: “God often allows you to fall into illness, not because He has abandoned you, but in order to glorify you more. Lord our God! Thou art most declaring, O Sweetest Jesus: “Inasmuch as thou hast done unto one of these least of these brethren of mine, thou hast done unto me.” Yes, Lord, judge me, a sinner, according to this word of Yours, so that I may be deemed worthy to do Your good will for the joy and consolation of the tempted, the ailing Thy servant, whom You redeemed with Your honest Blood. Send down Thy grace upon me, the thorns that burn up the passions within me, calling me, a sinner, to the work of serving Thy Name; Without You we cannot do anything: visit the scourge of the night and tempt my heart, always standing at the head of the sick and overthrown; wound my soul with Your love, which endures everything and never falls away. Then I will be able, strengthened by You, to fight the good fight and maintain the faith, even until my last breath. For You are the Source of healings of soul and body, Christ our God, and to You, as the Savior of men and the Bridegroom of souls, coming at midnight, we send glory and thanksgiving and worship, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
