2012 shooting and death

On November 20, 2012, around 7 p.m., Camacho was shot in the jaw with a single shot in his hometown of Bayamón, Puerto Rico. A number of news agencies reported that 50-year-old Camacho was sitting in the passenger seat of a friend's car and was shot by unknown assailants from a passing SUV. The driver of the car, Adrian Mojica Moreno, a childhood friend of Camacho's, was killed during the attack. Camacho was taken to San Pablo Hospital in Bayamón, where he was reported to be in critical condition. Police said the van was found with nine bags of cocaine inside.

The bullet penetrated the left side of Camacho's jaw and fractured his fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae, causing damage to the carotid artery, which restricted blood flow to the brain. Doctors initially said Camacho had a good chance of surviving but might be paralyzed, but after he suffered cardiac arrest overnight they said his brain activity was very low. The next morning he was declared brain dead. Héctor Camacho was officially declared dead after suffering a heart attack the next day and was taken off life support.

Excerpt characterizing Camacho, Hector

Mom was so weak that for another three whole months she could hardly walk on her own... The Seryogins looked after her in every possible way, trying to get out faster, and dad carried her in his arms when needed, and when the gentle spring sun shone in April, he sat with her for hours in the garden, under the cherry blossoms, trying with all his might to somehow revive his extinct “star”...
But to my mother, these tender, falling cherry petals only reminded her of the equally tender, fragile child’s life that had flown away from her without time... The thought that she did not even have time to see or bury her baby burned her tormented soul , and she could not forgive herself for this. And, in the end, all this pain spilled out into her real depression...
At that time, the Seryogins as a whole family tried to avoid talking about what had happened, despite the fact that dad was still choked by the pain of loss that had fallen upon him, and he could not get out of that hopeless “island of despair” into which his misfortune had thrown him... There is probably nothing more terrible in the world than burying your own child... And dad had to do it alone... Alone to bury his little son, whom he, without even knowing it yet, managed to love so much and selflessly...
I still can’t read these sad and bright lines that dad wrote to his little son, knowing that he will never have the opportunity to tell him this...

To my son
My bright-eyed boy!
Joy, my hope!
Don't go, my darling,
don't leave me!
Stand up, stretch out your little hands,
Open your eyes,
You are my dear boy,
My glorious son.
Stand up, look, listen
How the birds sing to us,
Like flowers at dawn
They drink May dew.
Get up and look, my dear,
Death will wait for you!
Do you see? - And on the graves
Sunny May lives on!
Flames with flowers
Even the land of graves...
So why is there so little
Have you, my son, lived?
My bright-eyed boy,
Joy, my hope!
Don't go, my darling,
Don't leave me...
He named him Alexander, choosing this name himself, since his mother was in the hospital and he had no one else to ask. And when the grandmother offered to help bury the baby, the father categorically refused. He did everything himself, from start to finish, although I can’t even imagine how much grief he had to endure, burying his newborn son, and at the same time knowing that his beloved wife was dying in the hospital... But dad is everything endured without a single word of reproach to anyone, only the only thing he prayed for was that his beloved Annushka would return to him, while this terrible blow did not completely knock her down, and until night fell on her exhausted brain...
And so my mother returned, and he was completely powerless to help her with anything, and did not know at all how to get her out of this terrible, “dead” state...
The death of little Alexander deeply shocked the entire Seryogin family. It seemed like he would never return to this sad house sunlight, and laughter will never sound again... Mom was still “killed.” And although she young body, obeying the laws of nature, began to grow stronger and stronger, her wounded soul, despite all the efforts of her father, like a bird that had flown away, was still far away and, having plunged deeply into the ocean of pain, was in no hurry to return from there...

But soon, after some six months, good news came to them - mom was pregnant again... Dad was scared at first, but seeing that mom suddenly started to come to life very quickly, he decided to take the risk, and now everyone is with great impatience were expecting a second child... This time they were very careful and tried in every possible way to protect my mother from any unwanted accidents. But, unfortunately, trouble, apparently for some reason, fell in love with this hospitable door... And it knocked again...
Out of fear, knowing the sad story of my mother’s first pregnancy, and fearing that something might go “wrong” again, the doctors decided to do “ C-section"even before contractions begin (!). And apparently they did it too early... One way or another, a girl was born who was named Marianna. But, unfortunately, she also managed to live for a very short time - three days later, this fragile, slightly blossoming life, for reasons unknown to anyone, was interrupted...
An eerie impression was created that someone really didn’t want her mother to give birth at all... And although by nature and genetics she was a strong woman absolutely suitable for childbearing, she was already afraid to even think about repeating such a cruel attempt once upon a time at all...
But man is a surprisingly strong creature, and is capable of enduring much more than he himself could ever imagine... Well, pain, even the most terrible, (if it does not immediately break the heart) once apparently dulls, repressed, eternally living in each of us, hope. That is why, exactly a year later, very easily and without any complications, on an early December morning, another daughter was born to the Seryogin family, and this happy daughter it turned out to be me... But... and this birth probably would not have ended so happily if everything had continued to happen according to the pre-prepared plan of our “compassionate” doctors... On a cold December morning, mother was taken to the hospital, even before , how her contractions began, so that, again, “to be sure” that “nothing bad” would happen (!!!)... Wildly nervous from “bad premonitions,” dad rushed back and forth along the long hospital corridor, unable to calm down, because he knew that, according to their common agreement, mother made such an attempt in last time and if something happens to the child this time, it means they will never be destined to see their children... The decision was difficult, but dad preferred to see, if not the children, then at least his beloved “star” alive, and not bury his entire family at once, without even really understanding what his family really means...
To my father’s great regret, Dr. Ingelevicius, who was still the chief surgeon there, again came to check on my mother, and it was very, very difficult to avoid his “high” attention... After “carefully” examining my mother, Ingelevicius said that he would come tomorrow at 6 o'clock in the morning, to perform another “caesarean section” on mom, to which poor dad almost had a heart attack...
But at about five o’clock in the morning a very pleasant young midwife came to my mother and, much to my mother’s surprise, cheerfully said:
- Well, let’s get ready, now we’ll give birth!
When the frightened mother asked - what about the doctor? The woman, calmly looking into her eyes, affectionately replied that in her opinion, it was high time for mom to give birth to live (!) children... And she began to gently and carefully massage her mom’s belly, as if little by little preparing her for a “soon and happy” childbirth ... And so, with the light hand of this wonderful unknown midwife, at about six o’clock in the morning, my mother easily and quickly gave birth to her first living child, who, fortunately, turned out to be me.
- Well, look at this doll, mom! – the midwife cheerfully exclaimed, bringing mother the already washed and clean, small, screaming bundle. And my mother, seeing her little daughter alive and healthy for the first time... fainted with joy...

When exactly at six o'clock in the morning Dr. Ingelevičius entered the room, a picture appeared before his eyes. wonderful picture- a very happy couple was lying on the bed - it was my mother and me, her living newborn daughter... But instead of rejoicing at such an unexpected happy ending, the doctor for some reason went into a real rage and, without saying a word, jumped out from the room...
We never found out what really happened with all the “tragically unusual” births of my poor, suffering mother. But one thing was clear for sure - someone really didn’t want at least one mother’s child to be born into this world alive. But apparently the one who so carefully and reliably protected me all my later life, this time he decided to prevent the death of the Seryogins’ child, somehow knowing that he would probably be the last in this family...
This is how, “with obstacles,” my amazing and unusual life, the appearance of which, even before my birth, fate had prepared for me, even then quite complex and unpredictable...
Or maybe it was someone who already knew then that someone would need my life for something, and someone tried very hard so that I would still be born on this earth, despite all the “difficulties” created obstacles"...

Time passed. My tenth winter had already completely ruled the yard, covering everything around with a snow-white fluffy blanket, as if wanting to show that I was the rightful mistress of the at the moment she is here.
More and more more people I went into stores to stock up on New Year's gifts in advance, and even the air already “smelled” the holiday.
My two favorite days were approaching - my birthday and New Year, between which there was only a two-week difference, which allowed me to fully enjoy their “celebration”, without any long break...
I hovered around my grandmother all day long, trying to find out what I would get for my “special” day this year?.. But for some reason my grandmother did not give in, although before it had never been very difficult for me to “melt” her silence even before my birthday and find out what kind of “pleasure” I can expect. But this year, for some reason, to all my “hopeless” attempts, my grandmother only smiled mysteriously and answered that it was a “surprise”, and that she was absolutely sure that I would really like it. So, no matter how hard I tried, she stood firm and did not give in to any provocations. There was nowhere to go - we had to wait...

Former world champion in three weight categories Hector Camacho died in Puerto Rico after a gunshot wound. Alexey Sukachev talks about the difficult journey of a boxer who never fully showed his genius to the world.

Is it possible to call a man who became world champion four times in three weight categories (not counting an unimaginable number of minor titles), defeated Roberto Duran (twice), and was the only one to knock out Sugar Ray Leonard, a loser who never fully realized his talent? Rhetorical question, you say? Not in the case of Puerto Rican Hector Camacho, nicknamed “Macho”...

Recalls popular HBO analyst Max Kellerman: “When people talk about the greatest disappointments - not in the history of boxing, but in the history of sports in general - the name Mike Tyson is always the first to come to mind and the first to be heard in any such conversation. But Hector Camacho is next to Mike. Not in terms of his character, but in terms of what he could have achieved, but never achieved.” Max continues: “He had outstanding talent, talent on par with the best boxers in the history of our sport. No, no, not in the history of any weight, but in the history of boxing in general. He was, of course, a troublesome fellow. In Spanish Harlem (a New York area where Camacho moved from Bayamón as a teenager), he “expanded”, stole cars - he generally had huge problems with the law. But he’s not a bad guy - he just found himself in this environment, and it gradually sucked him in. But it wasn’t her who ruined him, not her... But he could have become a symbol of the 80s, and the 90s too, to be in the place of Roy Jones and Oscar De La Hoya. He had a powerful talent, and physically he was simply monstrously gifted. He was a unique athlete. Michael Katz once said that Camacho was the greatest talent he had ever seen. And Michael knows what he’s talking about.”

“He had outstanding talent, talent on par with the best boxers in the history of our sport.”

Camacho began competing as a professional at the age of 18 after a long (and successful) career not only as an amateur and at the same time in other types of martial arts, but also in much tougher street fights. Hector grew by leaps and bounds, almost imperceptibly moving from fights with professional losers to fights with the same (but what kind of “same”?!) young talents as himself. In the 12th fight he became a champion North America(NABF) in the first lightweight division, and this was not an accident, but a pattern. Camacho of those times combined swipe with outstanding technique and superb reflexes. “Before Floyd (Mayweather) came along, I thought Camacho was the greatest fighter in the history of this weight. Many people include all the fast techies in one group, but this trick didn’t work with “Macho”: he was head and shoulders faster than all of them combined. At 59 kilograms (weight limit), it was simply impossible to touch him.”

Hector soon appeared on television, and his popularity went far beyond New York. This arrogant but skilled guy was a spectacle, a real curiosity, giving people everything that is important in boxing. One round was enough for him to deal with the dangerous Refugio Rojas. Even less was spent on John Montez: Camacho missed with a left jab, grabbed Montez’s head with his right for a second, bent it down and loaded it with a powerful left uppercut - only veterans had previously shown such a combination of dirt and skill.

From October 1982 to April 1983, Camacho defeated four opponents with a combined record of 95 victories and one defeat, and in August of the same year, having defeated former world champion Rafael Limon, the Puerto Rican became the WBC world champion. One defense and a jump in new weight, where Camacho Sr. showed himself in full color , defeating the most experienced and very strong Mexican Jose Luis Ramirez (90-5 at the time of the fight) on points in August 1985 - after this fight he entered the top five P4P according to a number of prestigious publications. There was less than a year left before the crash of the champion, although he did not know about it, preferring to let go barbs to other champions and contenders.

On June 13, 1986, Camacho faced another outstanding and hard-hitting Puerto Rican, Edwin Rosario, in the first defense of the WBC lightweight belt he won against Ramirez. The fight was even, but at the 45th second of the 5th round, Rosario landed a powerful left hook, from which Hector was led, and he floated until the end of the round. In the 11th, Rosario repeated this trick (this time with a double hook and cross), but Camacho again survived and survived until the final bell. He won that fight by split decision, but no one ever saw the old “Macho” in the ring again.

From October 1982 to April 1983, Camacho defeated four opponents for a combined record of 95 wins and one loss.

“It was a real drama,” says Max Kellerman again. “If you think about it, it was best win in Camacho's career. He fought an outstanding knockout artist, a future 4-time world champion, who was at the peak of his form. He survived in a situation that no one else would have survived. But she broke it. That signature aggressiveness, that courage and rage with which he fought disappeared completely and irrevocably. He became a coward in the ring, became a spoiler, a boxer for whom safety comes first (safety-first fighter). Macho Time came to an end, and his spirit simply evaporated”...

If anyone doesn’t know, 50-year-old Hector, who boxed for 30 years in a row with almost no truly long downtime, last entered the ring just two years ago. On May 14, 2010, he lost on points to the “young” (37 years old!) Mexican Saul Duran. This defeat was his sixth, but “Macho” was never knocked out in the ring by anyone. Break Someone managed to hit this warrior only with lead, but Camacho held this blow too until the last.
