1. Galaxy NGC 4526.

Behind the soulless name of NGC 4526 lies a small galaxy located in the so-called Virgo Cluster of Galaxies. Fifteen years ago on board spaceship Columbia launched NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory into space. Since July 23, 1999, this telescope has helped revolutionize our understanding of the universe through the images it produces.

Chandra, one of NASA's "Great Observatories" along with the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes, is specifically designed to detect X-rays from hot and energetic regions of the Universe.

Thanks to its high resolution and sensitivity, Chandra observes a variety of objects from the nearest planets and comets to the most distant known quasars. The telescope images traces of exploding stars and supernova remnants, observes the region near the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, and detects other black holes in the Universe.

"Chandra" contributed to the study of the nature of dark energy, allowed us to take a step forward towards its study, traces the division dark matter from normal matter in collisions between galaxy clusters.

The telescope rotates in an orbit up to 139,000 km away from the Earth’s surface. This height allows you to avoid the Earth's shadow during observations. When Chandra was launched into space, it was the largest of any satellite launched previously by the shuttle.

1. Galactic pyrotechnic show

This spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici is approximately 23 million light years away from us. It is known as NGC 4258 or M106.

2. In the center of the Flame Nebula

A cluster of stars in an optical image from the Digitized Sky Survey at the center of the Flame Nebula, or NGC 2024. Images from the Chandra and Spitzer telescopes are juxtaposed, shown as an overlay, and show how powerful X-ray and infrared imaging can help study star-forming regions.

7. A beautiful end to a star’s life

Stars like the Sun can become surprisingly photogenic in their twilight years. A good example serves as the planetary Eskimo Nebula NGC 2392, which is located approximately 4,200 light years from Earth.

8. Supernova Remnant W49B

The remnant of supernova W49B, about a thousand years old, is located about 26,000 light years away. Supernova explosions that destroy massive stars tend to be symmetrical, with a more or less even distribution of stellar material in all directions. In W49B we see an exception.

9. Cat's Eye Nebula

When radiation winds from massive young stars impact clouds of cold gas, they can form new generations of stars. Perhaps this very process is captured in the Elephant Trunk Nebula ( official name IC 1396A).

12. Galaxy NGC 4945

An image of the central region of the galaxy, which resembles the Milky Way in appearance. But it contains a much more active supermassive black hole in the white area. The distance between the galaxy NGC 4945 and Earth is about 13 million light years.

A telescope (astrograph) is used to photograph celestial objects. It is known that galaxies and nebulae have low brightness, and to photograph them it is necessary to use long shutter speeds.

And this is where the problems begin. Due to the rotation of the Earth around its axis, even with a slight increase in the telescope, the daily movement of the stars is noticeable, and if the device does not have a clock drive, then the stars will appear in the form of dashes in the photographs. However, not all so simple. Due to the inaccuracy of aligning the telescope to the celestial pole and errors in the clock drive, the stars, writing out a curve, slowly move across the field of view of the telescope, and point stars are not obtained in the photograph. In order to completely eliminate this effect, it is necessary to use guiding (an optical tube with a camera is placed on the top of the telescope, aimed at the guiding star). Such a tube is called a guide. Through the camera, the image is sent to a PC, where the image is analyzed. If the star moves in the guide’s field of view, the computer sends a signal to the telescope mount motors, thereby correcting its position. This is how you achieve pinpoint stars in the picture. Then a series of photographs are taken with a long shutter speed. But due to the thermal noise of the matrix, the photos are grainy and noisy. In addition, spots from dust particles on the matrix or optics may appear in the pictures. You can get rid of this effect using a caliber.

We have always been taught that everything has a beginning and an end. But that's not true! Space has no clear boundary. As you move away from the Earth, the atmosphere becomes rarefied and gradually gives way to outer space. It is not known exactly where the boundaries of space begin. There are a number of opinions from different scientists and astrophysicists, but no one has yet provided concrete facts. If the temperature had a constant structure, then the pressure would change according to the law - from 100 kPa at sea level to absolute zero. The International Aeronautical Station (IAS) established the altitude boundary between space and the atmosphere at 100 km. It was called the Karman line. The reason for marking this particular height was the fact: when pilots rise to this height, gravity ceases to influence the flying vehicle, and therefore it goes to “first space speed,” that is, to the minimum speed for transition to a geocentric orbit.

American and Canadian astronomers measured the onset of exposure to cosmic particles and the limit of control of atmospheric winds. The result was recorded at the 118th kilometer, although NASA itself claims that the boundary of space is located at the 122nd kilometer. At this altitude, the shuttles switched from conventional maneuvering to aerodynamic maneuvering and, thus, “rested” on the atmosphere. The solar system is represented by a number of planets and the brightest star, the sun. The space itself is called interplanetary space or vacuum. The vacuum of space is not absolute; it contains atoms and molecules. They were discovered using microwave spectroscopy. There are also gases, dust, plasma, various space debris and small meteors. Images taken at extremely long distances using the Hubble Space Telescope, which left Earth exactly 25 years ago. The deadline is no joke. In the first photo, the Horsehead Nebula has graced astronomy books since its discovery nearly a century ago.

Jupiter's moon Ganymede is shown as it begins to disappear behind the giant planet. Consisting of rock and ice, the satellite is the largest in solar system, even more planet Mercury.

Bright Southern Hemisphere The star RS Puppis is surrounded by a reflective cloud of dust, counted like a lampshade. This star has 10 times the mass of the Sun and is 200 times larger.


The pillars of creation are located in the Eagle Nebula. They are made of stellar gas and dust and are located 7,000 light years from Earth.


This is the first time such a clear image has been taken from a wide-angle lens of the M82 galaxy. This galaxy is notable for its bright blue disk, network of scattered clouds, and fiery jets of hydrogen emanating from its center.


Hubble captured a rare moment of two spiral galaxies positioned on the same line: the first, small one, abuts the center of a larger one.
