Is it possible to paint clay? Is it possible to paint polymer clay with gouache?

Some craftsmen prefer white self-hardening clay. This is very convenient, first of all, because it does not need to be baked. What is the easiest way to paint small items made from such clay? In this master class we will look at how to paint polymer clay at home with acrylic paint.

We will need: 2 jars of yogurt, a nail.

Yogurt containers must be selected according to size and one must be completely inserted into the other to the very bottom. This is very important. This way the coloring will work better and you will need much less paint.

We take a smaller container and use a nail to make holes along the entire surface of the bottom.

This is the mini sieve we have.

Now everything is ready for painting. We insert our sieve into a large one. We take our small ones. We dilute 1x1 acrylic paint with water and make the color we need.

We place a small amount of parts in our homemade sieve.

We fill our bowls with paint; it is advisable that the entire surface of the products is covered with paint. Let's shake our paint cans for a couple of seconds. The main thing is not to overexpose the clay in the liquid, otherwise it may begin to melt.

We take out our sieve from the main jar. The paint should all flow into the large one.

Now we turn our sieve over and pour our products onto polyethylene or foil. This must be done to allow our crafts to dry.

After drying, use a thin brush to paint over the folds.

This makes painting very convenient and quick.

Now you can make all kinds of beauty.

Coloring polymer clay in different ways

Hello dear sculpting lovers!

Sometimes it is not at all profitable to buy polymer clay of a color that you do not use at all. After all, some products require very little clay, but you can’t do without this color at all! Some clay is sold at 100 grams. from which you will spend a small part of it, and where is the extra?? After all, it is not needed... and will dry out over time... it's a pity. So what to do? In the article you will see a short video clip that clearly shows how clay is colored in different ways.

To prevent this from happening, in this article I will tell you how to very simply paint clay, the amount that you need. This method can be used to paint both polymer clay and cold porcelain.

  • Polymer clay with which you will work;
  • acrylic or oil paints

It can be oil paints, acrylics, pastels, anything that has dye, even lipstick)))

We take the required amount of plastic (you can use a little more, because if there is not enough, then it will be very, very difficult to achieve exactly the same color).

To get delicate tones (light), then add a small drop of paint, but if darker, then without sparing, add a lot of paint. I prefer to paint with acrylic paints. It is advisable to buy bright colors, then the finished products will look very beautiful.

When painting, other incidents are possible - for example, BEBIK brand clay begins to crumble if you add a lot of paint to it.

For this method you need to have several different colors polymer clay of the same brand. Mixing occurs as with classic mixing of paints. Below I will give a small cheat sheet.

It is very important to use the same type of clay with this coloring method, so that after mixing you can end up with a material. which will differ in its properties from mixed types.

I use this method most often to color white clay. First you need to rub or scrape, for example, with a scalpel, pastel powder of the desired color. Don't scrape off a lot of pastel at once. To start, take small quantity powder and mix with clay. You will see what color you get and, if necessary, you can add more and get the desired result.

In this video you will see all the methods described above.

Now you can easily make polymer clay of any tone and shade.

Coloring polymer clay.

Recently, in one of my posts the topic was how to prepare polymer clay. In this post I will briefly write about how you can make colored polymer clay. Since colored clay is often needed when making products, you need to know what paints you can use. Now you will learn about methods for producing colored polymer clay.

To color polymer clay you can use:

— aniline dyes for fabric;

There is no need to put a lot of paint at once, but it is better to add it in portions, gradually, and at the same time you need to stir constantly.

Each portion of colored plastic should be kept separately wrapped in plastic bag- they all need to be placed in plastic container with a tight lid - keep in the refrigerator.

I offer several simple ways how to get colored polymer clay:

- coloring finished products:

— if the products are ready, that is, they have already gone through the “baking” process, then they can be painted with acrylic or other paints.

- mixing white polymer clay with acrylic paints:

- to do this, apply a little paint of the desired color to the prepared piece of clay and knead it with your fingers. If the shade turns out to be too pale, the procedure can be repeated.

It is important that if some of the paint remains on your hands, it must be washed off immediately and only then continue to knead the mixture until the color becomes uniform.

- using food coloring:

— during cooking, add food coloring of the desired color to the white polymer clay;

- can also be painted using acrylic or gouache paints.

Another interesting way coloring of finished products:

- the product is coated with dry dye (using a brush), and then it must be held over steam for some time, as this fixes the dye. This coloring method allows you to get a more realistic look to your products.

That's all. As you can see, everything is very simple. Just as easy, you can purchase ceramic sinks trademark"Blanco", which has been known since 1925. To view the product catalog, visit the "Blanko" company store. There is a ceramic, granite and stainless steel sink. By going to the store’s website you will learn more about delivery, payment and other information.

Part 49 - How to make colored polymer clay

The words “fimo”, “plastic” and “polymer clay” have already become synonymous for today’s Internet users, since this brand of plastic is the most popular. And in fact, there is no doubt about its quality.

The manufacturer of this plastic is the German company STAEDTLER www.fimo.com. Fimo polymer clay is available in a huge color scheme, there are even sparkles, transparent (light-transmitting) and colors that glow in ultraviolet.

Fimo classic is the most popular grade of polymer clay. It is harder than other varieties. This variety of Fimo is very hard, but when heated in the hands it becomes much more flexible. It is difficult to work with such Fimo; it requires effort. Its advantage is that this type of polymer clay allows you to achieve excellent results for creating combined multi-colored patterns. After firing, this type of clay holds its shape perfectly, does not crack, and is very hard.

Fimo soft is a soft variety of Fimo polymer clay. It is more flexible and has a larger palette of colors. Fimo soft is perfect for children's creativity, but is not suitable for fine work. Artists have even learned to mix two types of clay, Fimo and Fimo soft, with each other, while obtaining plastic of excellent quality.

Fimo Effect is also a soft version of Fimo polymer clay. This series includes plastic that has special properties, such as glowing in the dark or imitating metal or stone. You can also achieve very interesting effects when working with Fimo with translucent plastic.

Fimo Puppen is special kind polymer clay for modeling dolls. It is ideal for detailed modeling: particularly flexible and uniformly elastic. This type of Fimo can also be mixed with the FIMO soft/classic types. Fimo Pappen colors have natural shades and a matte surface when baked.

Fimo liquid is a liquid type of Fimo polymer clay in the form of a gel. Working with it is quick and easy. Your favorite pictures can be easily translated into decorations you create. This gel is an ideal complement to FIMO soft and FIMO classic.

To protect plastic products from external environment or to give them a glossy shine, it is advisable to coat them with varnish. In addition, works coated with varnish have an additional depth of color.

Unfortunately, not every varnish can be used for coating; some simply do not dry on plastic; others, although they dry, begin to stick after a while

Don't use:
Regular nail polishes have a completely different formula and may start to stick after a while.
Hairsprays are not waterproof, and dust likes to settle on them.
Universal acrylic varnishes, which are sold in office supplies - they are the ones that often do not dry on plastic.

What varnishes are suitable for polymer plastic:

1. Specialized, from manufacturers of polymer plastics.

Examples:

2. Water-based acrylic coating for wooden floors. Often they also write “polyurethane-acrylic” on the cans.

Examples:

Varnish Varathane Crystal Clear Waterbone– water-based coating for floor treatment, transparent, without yellowing, stable, highly durable, non-toxic. It happens - glossy / matte / semi-matte.

AND Future Floor Finish. These two products have been tested by a whole generation of polymer scientists.

If it is not possible to buy Varathane or Future Floor Finish, you can look at any other similar coating for wooden floors at a hardware store. The main thing is to pay attention that the varnish does not contain latex - it is not friendly with plastic. Detailed discussion different types You can look at the varnish on the forum of the Osinka website.

What to do if you bought the “wrong” varnish and it started to stick?

You can try baking the product in the oven at a temperature of 110-130 degrees for 10-15 minutes if the varnish was water-based. If this does not help and the product still sticks, then you need to wipe off the layer of sticky varnish with acetone, wash with soap and water, dry and apply a new layer of “correct” varnish.

Some subtleties

You can often hear that even good varnishes begin to stick, peel off or chip. What could be the reason?

The product was not baked for enough time, the plastic was not completely polymerized and the plasticizer reacted with the varnish. To eliminate this reason, you need to finish baking the product, without even removing the varnish layer.

There was too much plasticizer in the plastic and a thin oily film formed on the surface of the product after baking, which prevents strong contact between the surface of the plastic and the varnish. St. Petersburg plastic has this property to the highest degree. What to do? – wipe the surface of the product with alcohol before applying varnish and/or wash with dishwashing detergent. By the way, a fatty film can also appear from frequent contact of the baked product with your hands, especially if you have previously worked with raw plastic.

The first coat of varnish was not dried sufficiently before applying the next one. Some polishes appear dry within 10-15 minutes of application; in fact, many polishes take several hours to dry completely.

If you apply varnish immediately after sanding without removing any remaining dust, then the varnish will fall not on the surface of the plastic, but on the “cushions” of dust. Over time, during the use of the product, this can cause pieces of varnish to chip off in these very places. Therefore, after sanding, if polishing is not intended, it is advisable to wipe the surface of the plastic with a damp cloth and dry before applying varnish.

As a rule, at least two layers should be applied, in special cases up to five. Believe me, the difference is very big, the more layers, the deeper the color and more spectacular view, this is especially true for products made of metallized and translucent plastic.

The varnish is finally considered dry after a week, but this does not mean that the product cannot be worn - it simply does not need to be wetted. This, by the way, applies not only to acrylic varnish, but also to acrylic paints. If you do not dry it thoroughly between repeated coats, or wet it ahead of time, the varnish may come off as a film or bubble.

There are two ways to varnish beads: apply varnish with a brush and dip them in varnish. Let us explain the second method. The product on the stick is completely dipped into a container of varnish, then the excess varnish is allowed to drain off, twisting around the axis for a while so that the varnish is evenly distributed and placed to dry, stuck into a piece of hard foam rubber or foam. Usually, after a couple of minutes, a small drop forms at the bottom - remove it with a soft brush while it is still liquid. After the initial drying of the varnish, you can roll the toothpick in the bead to make it easier to pull it out later. After final drying, the beads are removed from the toothpicks with a twisting motion so as not to break it off and it does not remain in the bead.

**************************
Polymer clay is available in many color variations, but some projects still require the use of paints.

Test your paints: some paints take on chemical reaction with polymer clay. Paints such as enamels, varnishes and regular oil paints do not dry on polymer clay, leaving the surface sticky. If you have such paint, test it on a small piece of plastic. In turn, acrylic and oil-based water-soluble paints are perfect for working with polymer clay.

Painting plastic products requires a few basic tools.
Palette. You can buy it at an art store or make it yourself using any smooth plastic or glassware.
Water container. Any jar or mug that will not be used for drinking in the future will be suitable as a container.
Paper napkins or toilet paper.
Newspapers. They will help you protect your work surface; if you don't care about the cleanliness of your work area, you can skip this point.
Brushes. For a basic set you will need several brushes with synthetic bristles different forms and sizes.
Sponge. Useful for creating texture effects.

Surface primer

Acrylic paints do not always adhere well to polymer clay surfaces, so some projects require priming the surface before painting. There are two main types of primer application: spraying and brushing. The primer is black and white.

If you need to tint light or translucent plastic by mixing paint into it, then acrylic paints It is not recommended to add it to it (it is better to add ink), because The water contained in the paint evaporates during the firing process, and bubbles and unevenness may appear on the surface. However, some people talk about very successful experiences of mixing acrylic paints with plastic. The best way To check this, conduct a few experiments yourself using small pieces of plastic.

Acrylic paints dry out quickly, and we can give some tips on how to avoid this:
Place a small amount of paint on the palette.
If you plan to use the color in the future, then mix the paints in small plastic jars that can be closed with a lid (for example, gouache).
Add a drying retardant. You can buy it in the same place where acrylic paints are sold.

If this is your first experience using acrylic paints, then practice first on a piece of paper and learn the basic techniques.

Please note that acrylic paints darken as they dry and the color obtained on the palette will be noticeably different from the final color on the product. This point should always be taken into account when working with acrylic paints.

To give a product made of translucent plastic light colored shade, apply the paint, and then blot off the excess with a sponge or napkin. To age the surface, it must be tinted in such a way that the paint does not cover the entire surface, but rather lingers in small irregularities and wrinkles. To do this, you need to apply paint, and then carefully, without applying any effort, walk over the surface with a sponge or napkin

Oil paints

Unlike acrylic paints, which can cause bubbles when mixed with plastic, oil paints mix freely with polymer clay without any consequences.

Oil paints can be used in the same way as acrylic paints, with the only exception that the complete drying time for oil paints reaches up to six months and this makes it impossible to use them in the crackle technique. You also shouldn't varnish them, otherwise they won't be able to dry completely.

However, the long drying property of oil paints is not always a disadvantage and is used in some techniques. Please note that some oil paints can react chemically with polymer clay and the surface will always remain tacky. Therefore, before using paint, be sure to test it.

Some tips for choosing oil paints:
Ask a friend or find discussions on the Internet about what brand of paint they use.
Look for oil paints at the store that are specifically oil-based, not petroleum-derived.
Do your own tests if you already have oil paints. Apply a small amount of paint to the baked plastic. If after a month or more the surface begins to stick, then it is better not to use such paint. If the surface remains dry, then everything is fine.

Below are a few ways to use oil paints with polymer clay:
Oil paints can be used to cover both small details, and large surfaces of baked plastic. To fix the paint, re-bake the product for a few minutes.
To tint liquid plastic, add a small amount of oil paints to it to get pastel colors. Use oil paints to create an aged effect. Apply paint to the surface of the product and then carefully wipe off most of it.
Cover layers of polymer clay with paint using the Mokume Gane technique. Oil paints are successfully used in the technique of simulating natural stones (agate, granite).
Mix oil paint with unbaked polymer clay to create a marbled effect.

Ink

Due to the popularity of rubber stamps, there are several types of pigments and inks available today. Some are transparent, some are translucent, others have a metallic or iridescent color effect. Depending on the manufacturer, the ink has different properties, and you need to know these characteristics when using them with polymer clay.

Below are a few ways to use plastic with ink and rubber stamps.

Creating texture on unbaked plastic

Drawing with ink on plastic

Toning with liquid polymer clay

Toning translucent plastic

Toning layers of polymer clay using the Mokume gane technique

Applying ink to layers of polymer clay using the Mokume gane technique

Tinting shaving foam and applying it to unbaked beads to create an unusual texture

Applying ink in drops onto the shaving foam that covers the plastic to create a “marbled” surface.

Metallic paints

Metallic or iridescent acrylic paints (or inks) are used in the same way as regular color paints. But with the help of them you can create interesting effects, such as aging of the surface or crackle, and use them in the Mokume gane technique.

If you want to create a crackle effect, you should test the paint first because some paints do not crack when stretched, but rather stretch.

Metallic inks can be used in much the same way as acrylic paints.

Aerosols

The aerosol method of applying paint allows you to create smooth transitions between colors. This makes the sprayer an ideal tool for puppeteers whose work requires painting a complete surface. However, a sprayer is not a very cheap tool and is used mainly by professional craftsmen.

In order for the paint to adhere well, the surface must be polished and coated with acrylic primer (by spraying).

Pastel

Using soft pastels (not oil-based) is a fairly popular way to color polymer clay. To fix a pastel design, be it on paper or on a plastic surface, it must be coated with a special varnish.

Pearlescent powder

Pearlescent powder helps create iridescent and metallic effects on the surface. Such powders can be mixed with acrylic solvents, varnishes, liquid polymer clay, or directly applied to unbaked plastic.

Powders with a “metallic” effect are used to imitate metal elements of costume jewelry, imitate pearls and shells, as well as many other effects. Remember that the spool is small, but expensive: despite the fact that powders are sold in small containers, they last a long time.

Liquid polymer clay

Liquid plastic can be used as a fixative and applied over paint, or as paint (with pigments added to it). Liquid plastic can also be used to translate images.
