The text of Psalm 20 in the Psalter, written, according to historians, by the Jewish king David, is closely related in meaning to the previous Psalm 19. In it, the ruler of Israel and the psalmist praises and, given to him in the battle, with the help of which he was able to win a very important victory for his people over the Ammonites - one of the pagan tribes that had been at enmity with the Jews for centuries.

Based on this, the Orthodox Psalm 20 of King David serves as a hymn of thanksgiving and at the same time expresses David’s hope that God will not forsake His faithful servant in the future with help and blessing.

What is interesting about the text of the Christian Psalm 20 is that Israeli king unambiguously identifies his enemies with the enemies of the Lord, thereby exalting himself in the eyes of his people, and bringing him closer to God in his own eyes. At the end of the song, David asks the Creator for help in all future endeavors, promising in return to praise and extol the Lord. Interpretation of Psalm 20

This psalm is closely related to the previous one, being a song of thanksgiving for the granting of victory in battle (as the psalmist asked for in Ps. 19).

The "inscription" corresponds to verse 1.

A. Rejoice in the power of the Lord (20:2-8)

Ps. 20:2-7. The king... rejoices in the power of the Lord to give him “salvation” (here meaning “victory”) in the battle (verse 2). (David sings about himself in the third person.)

God accepted his prayer, fulfilled the desire of his heart and laid His hand on his head. golden crown king of Ammon (verses 3-4; 2 Kings 12:30).

In verses 5-7 there is an expression of gratitude for preserving the life of the king in battle with his enemies, but that his days will be long (David speaks of this in the “past tense” as a sign of confidence in this). The “salvation” in verse 6 is again in the sense of the “victory” that brought glory to David, “exalted” him.

B. In anticipation of future blessings (20:8-14)

Ps. 20:8-14. The psalmist moves from celebrating the blessings already received (verse 7) to expressing confidence in those to come. For the king trusts in the Lord, and because of the goodness of the Most High he will not be shaken (verse 8).

Seeing your enemies as enemies of the Lord. David has no doubt that His hand will find them all... those who hate the Lord: the wrath that He will bring down on them is likened by the psalmist to an all-consuming fire (verses 9-10). They and all that they sown on the earth, and all their descendants, will be destroyed, as if in a “furnace of fire,” because they hatched evil plans (and tried to carry them out, but failed) against David, God’s anointed (verses 11- 12).

Rejoicing over their victory, David and the people of Israel saw in it a guarantee of their future military successes - as if the Lord Himself had made the enemies of the Jews a target for His arrows (verse 13).

In verse 13 there is a promise of future praises.
