When the dark forces that poison it with subtle temptations retreat from the soul, the beneficial significance of night prayer will be felt. That is why demons influence the soul so strongly at night that during night prayer the soul becomes more open and accessible. But it becomes more open to both evil and good. When the evil recedes, the good will bear fruit a hundredfold.

At night the soul is quieter than during the day. And the quieter you are in your soul, the more you hear the Lord. At night, prayer moves more easily from external words into the heart and becomes spiritual prayer. At night prayer, when the soul cries out without words with one heartfelt sigh, the spirit of prayer strengthens and grows. The night prayer rule will achieve something that daytime prayer cannot provide: the illusory quality and lightness of our spiritual shell.

If the nightly rule is started at a good time, it will greatly advance the worshiper on the path of prayer, bringing him closer to the longed-for heartfelt prayer.”

Namely: to celebrate the New Year with prayer in church, at night, not at an abundant table, and not with your face in salad, and not in someone else’s apartment asking in the morning “where am I?” or “who are you?” Celebrate the calendar beginning of the new year in the temple! What is not beauty and what is not grace?

The clock on the Kremlin chimes will strike twelve times, and all sorts of “hurray” in Russian will be heard throughout the world, and the open corks of champagne bottles will be slammed. People like it. Everyone is sober and happy. Everyone has more real hopes for the same real happiness in the New Year after prayer and communion than after the songs of Kolya Baskov. It seems that the matter is clear and resolved. But…

But the tradition of praying at night can be gradually extended beyond the authority of Santa Claus.

In general, Christians used to pray more at night than during the day. Our cry at the All-Night Vigil, “Glory to Thee, who showed us the light,” recalls precisely these times. A night spent in prayer is as natural for Christians as a night spent playing cards is for a preference lover. And note: no one scolds or condemns preference lovers (as well as lovers of night discos, drinking parties and other night activities). This is their life. And we are told not to judge. We don't judge. But we sometimes scold our own people because they don’t want to sniffle and dream. We scold them for wanting to pray at night. It's a strange and incomprehensible thing.

Night liturgies are again emerging from centuries of darkness and declaring their right to exist. There is a phrase: “The future of the Church is its past.” Everything great that was revealed by the Church in the past must appear again before the decline of history. And asceticism, and mercy, and mutual assistance, and Eucharistic zeal... And night prayer too. The further people go, the more they will drink at night, fornicate, inject drugs, snort, steal, fight, cut themselves, hang themselves…. And the Church, without mixing with mass lawlessness, will have to intensify prayer. Including at night.

The pace of life is such that, except for Sunday, you don’t really pray during the liturgy. Work, you know. This and that. But who is stopping you from gathering once a month or once every two weeks at the prescribed time in church at midnight, praying, taking communion and going home? By two in the morning you will be asleep. Many people only look away from the TV and computer at this time. And in the morning I go to work as expected. Who's stopping? Nobody, except personal laziness and false fears. No matter what happens.

But life itself will force us to pray at night. The very internal logic of church history will force us to pray at night, and in attics, and in the field, and in the hold of a ship, and in the summer kitchen (I can go on with the list). So let's get used to it, not waiting for persecution and prayerfully pushing back its approach. After all, Eucharistic meetings really break the snares of the devil. The prayer of the Church weakens the total evil effect on the human race. Only she weakens. It is worth all of us to reduce the evil harvest of New Year's drunkenness, quarrels, fights and debauchery by the fact that many faithful will gather this night for prayer and the Eucharist. And then, you see, we will develop a taste for spiritual works. Because, frankly speaking, in some of us this taste is not noticeable at all.

According to the Orthodox tradition, you should thank God for every day you live, morning and evening, before going to bed. Prayers help you feel the love of the Lord and protect you from nightmares and unhappiness.

It is known that one should turn to God not only in moments of mental unhappiness and grief, but also in free time. Morning prayers help set the mood for a happy and successful day. And the evening ones cry out to the Creator: through words we thank the Almighty for every day we live and protect our soul from evil.

Orthodox prayers for the coming sleep
