Skills in tes online. Racial Skills

Fans The Elder Scrolls are already accustomed to the system of progressive movements of their characters from Oblivion And Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls Online have not changed too much in this regard. TESO allows you to choose from a variety of options to build your character exactly the way you want. The number of skill options is huge and players can master different skills and talents, and given enough time, you can master almost all the skills.

This guide will cover the basic ways your character looks in Elder Scrolls Online, and how you can use different ways to customize your character to suit your playstyle.

Map with zone levels
Map of Tamriel with approximate zones
The main progression in ESO is of course leveled out: killing monsters, completing quests, exploring the giant land of Tamriel, or even blocking gives you experience points that eventually lead to your character leveling up. The traditional and proven system that works well in other MMORPGs is also present in TESO, so I'm sure you're already familiar with it. By leveling up, your character gains access to skill points and attribute points, and each level gives you one point in each of them. Skill points can also be obtained throughout the world by finding "sky shards".

The first starting islands (Bleakrock Isle, Roost Khenarthi and Stros M'kai) are aimed at levels 1-5. The second zone is 3-15, then 15-25, the fourth is 25-35, then 35-40 and finally the fifth map for levels 40-45. Around level 45 or so, players will usually head to Coldharbour for level 50. Once you complete the storyline for your faction, you will move into another faction's zones and start gaining Veteran titles (also called 50+ content).

Attribute points

Attributes are used to improve your character's main resources: health, magic and stamina. Each of these three has different benefits for your character and its build:

  • Healthcare: typical health system as seen in other games - if you take damage in combat your health depletes, the more health you have the more you have.
  • Magic: Another standard system, magicka is used to cast spells.
  • Endurance: For those unfamiliar with previous Elder Scrolls games, stamina is used for sprinting, blocking, dodging, and using weapon abilities.

There's nothing complicated about these three basic character attributes, and you basically put your attribute points into whatever works best for your class, playstyle, and character creation. There is a system called "recharge" where putting all your dots into one attribute will result in a reduced effect (recoil reduction, basically), so it's often not that hard to mix it up. An attribute point can even be taken separately from skill points, but it costs a negligible amount of gold.

It's interesting to note that investing AP in health gives you +15, while 1 point only gives you 10+ stamina or magicka. While the extra magicka early on for leveling is very useful, in the endgame you'll likely want to focus the majority of your attribute points on health (despite the overload), and get stamina and magicka from items, racial passives, and especially armor spells , since they give the same amount of bonuses for all three of these resources.

Skill Points

Skill points are used on skills. Score points allow you to develop your character by specializing in certain spells. Each skill point unlocks a specific spell or ability, all of which are classified into specific thematic skill lines such as class, weapon, armor, or merchant. Simply using abilities in a skill line will unlock further abilities in the same skill line, so it's important to think ahead and not neglect using any abilities you've chosen.

Overall, you gain about 300 skill points worth of Shout at level 50, allowing you to make the most of several different skill trees. Funds are available, but they are very expensive, depending on how many skill points you have allocated.

Morphing abilities

Morphing Abilities After using a certain spell for a while (when it reaches level 4) and having experience with it, you can also change it by clicking on them with an additional utility: for example, the Templar ability called Rushed Ceremony heals a nearby allied player and when it transforms, it can either heal two additional allies or restore magicka when you cast it.

Choosing how to morph your abilities can also have a deeper impact, for example if you're a solo player you'll probably want to use the final morph on the aforementioned Rushed Ceremony spell, so you'll always need to consider that you or your party may end up more useful. You can only choose one morph, not both!

Ultimate abilities

By using spells and gaining experience in the same skill line, you eventually gain access to ultimate abilities. They don't cost any magicka or stamina to throw, but you can't use them very often since they recharge during combat. However, they are some of the most powerful spells in the game and can have a significant impact in battle.

While you can have multiple ultimate abilities to choose from, you can only place them on your skill bar at any given time. Successfully performing certain actions during combat (such as dodging or blocking) gives you Finesse, which grants you more experience and loot, but perhaps more importantly also allows you to use your ultimate abilities more often.

Passive Abilities

Passive abilities. Another way to improve your existing skills and spells is with passive abilities. These have a lower effect on your character, but can be worth it if you specialize in a certain playstyle. For example, you can spend skill points on a passive ability that increases the damage of all your fire spells or unlocks the ability to passively regenerate health during combat.

Various passive abilities are available across all skills, including class, racial, and others. Proper management of your skills is very important, and while TESO allows for a variety of character builds, many times it is best to specialize in a specific game and playstyle. Luckily, the game allows you to create a character exactly the way you like and doesn't force you into any specific skill line. For the most part, passive abilities only affect active spells in the same skill line, but some are globally active.

Classes and races

The choice of race and class also affects the development of your character. Your race gives you a specific set of general passive skills, some of which may be more or less useful for certain builds. They are however quite generic, so don't worry and just pick whatever race you like to play!

Classes, on the other hand, have somewhat more specific skill tree lines. Each class automatically unlocks three skill lines, which is the main way to determine playstyle. Choosing a class does not determine which skill line you should choose, but you are limited in choice, so choose your class wisely and make sure its playstyle suits you. I highly recommend you take a look at our class guides which contain a list of skills and abilities to help you decide which class to choose!

Regardless of your class choice, you can also unlock new skill lines throughout the world by studying or joining a guild. Joining a fighter or mage guild is quite simple and the easiest way to unlock new skill lines. You can also become either a vampire or a werewolf, giving your character a very specific set of skills.

Veteran ranks

Veteran Rank (VR) is a progression system available at level 50. Once your character reaches a level, they automatically gain VR1. Each Veteran rank has a better gear level associated with it, making it essentially a gear progression. Progression in Veteran ranks is also achieved by searching the higher difficulties of Veteran dungeons, PvP battles, and even crafting. Currently, the highest veteran rating you can achieve is 10.

Progressing through VR allows you to use better hardware, of course, but it also increases your "premium" (see above in the Attribute points). VR 1-5 is often referred to as “50+” and VR5-10 as “50++”.

General Skill Lines

Some skills like Weapon, Armor or Trading Skills, are available to all characters regardless of race or class. Even if you deviate a little from your class choice and go with a spellcaster or mage creation, for example, you can still master melee weapons simply by equipping and using them.

Considering you get about 300 skill points in total, in the endgame it's very likely that you'll be experimenting and using a lot of different skill lines. For leveling up, it's best to focus on fewer skill trees and learn and morph abilities to add effects. If you intend to commit to any serious crafting, investing a few points into creating skill trees is often a must.

In conclusion The Elder Scrolls Online allows you to create your character exactly the way you want. When you're choosing a race and class, it's best to have a specific playstyle in mind, but the game encourages experimentation, and there are a ton of combinations of builds, skill trees, spells, and abilities for you to choose from and discover for yourself.
