There shouldn't be any problems with the installation.

The XnView working window is a familiar file explorer. On the left is a vertical list of folders (including subfolders), and on the right is the contents of the selected folder. The program recognizes and shows the user only graphic files (but you can configure it to show all files). At the top there is a traditional menu with commands familiar to many programs - “File”, “Edit”, etc. In the “View” menu, you can customize the display options for folders and files in them to your liking; for example, you can select the size of image thumbnails.

To batch process web graphics, we only need context menu commands. To call it, simply right-click on the image. Let's highlight three main teams.

Convert. Using Ctrl, select the required images, and then select “Convert to” from the context menu. There are 3 conversion options available - JPEG, TIFF, PNG, BMP. Files created in the new format will not replace existing ones.

Batch renaming. This option is useful if you pay a lot of attention to SEO image titles. For example, your blog post is about cars. The post contains about 50 photos of cars. Moreover, the names of the photographs consist of some random symbols and letters. Using the "Batch Rename" option, you can very quickly rename all images according to the created template. For example, the template will be as follows – photo_auto-##. Then the first image will be called photo_auto-1.jpg, the second - photo_auto-2.jpg, etc. That is, instead of a hash, the file serial number will be substituted. In the special batch renaming window you can see a list of names of all files (old and new).

There are many more options and possibilities here. First, using Ctrl, select the images that need to be processed. In the “Batch Processing” window, you can add more files or entire folders. In the "Output" section, you need to specify the folder where the converted images will be saved. If you want to replace the original images with converted ones, then specify the same folder. Below, select the format of the converted images. There are about 20-30 different formats available here, but it is advisable to choose JPEG. In the “Overwrite” item, select “Replace”.

Don't forget to open the "Options" item. This button is located opposite the “Format” item. In the options, you should move the “Quality” slider in the “Recording” tab to the position you need. If you want to maintain the original quality of the files, then move this slider all the way to the right.

Now open the “Transformations” tab in the batch processing window. Here you must select the conversion type. You can add a watermark to images, crop them, resize them, add a certain type of filter, and perform corrections. And all this at once in batch mode. Agree that it is very convenient. The two most commonly used options by webmasters are adding a watermark and resizing. Below we will briefly consider these processes.

Double-click on the “Watermark” item, after which a menu will open. First, you need to select the watermark file itself and specify the degree of its transparency (everything is according to your taste). Next, indicate the location on the image where the sign will be located (9 location options are available). At the very bottom you can specify the horizontal and vertical offset in pixels from the edge of the picture. To add a watermark, click “Run”.

Very often, for a post you need to reduce large images while maintaining their quality and proportions. To do this, after selecting the required images and setting general settings, double-click on the “Resize” item in the “Transformations” tab. In the parameters, indicate either the desired width or the desired height. The second parameter will be changed automatically (while maintaining the proportions). But for this, the “Maintain proportions” checkbox must be checked. In this case, all files with a smaller width or height will not be affected (only files with a larger width or height will be adjusted to the parameters). At the end, also click “Run”.

After unpacking the XnView Full archive, the program can be launched from the folder by placing the application in a convenient location on the computer or on a removable device (flash drive).

When first launched, in the configuration wizard, the XnView program prompts you to select the location of the user settings and integrate your commands into the Windows context menu. You can refuse some offers, add commands to the system and associate files from the program settings.

After launch, you will see the main window of the XnView program. The appearance of the XnView main window can be changed from the View menu by selecting View and Location from the settings context menu.

The browser for viewing photos and other files has three areas: the folder tree area, the contents area of the selected folder, and the preview area (preview). These areas can be hidden using the small blue buttons.

The folder tree looks like Windows Explorer. The folder tree is displayed in the “Folders” tab. Nearby are the “Favorites” and “Categories” tabs.

Files are added to the “Favorites” tab using the corresponding button on the toolbar.

In the “Categories” tab, you can organize all your photos by distributing images by topic. By default, the program has a number of categories created. You can create new categories. To do this, select a category, then select “New Category”, assign a name to the new category. Next, select the image in the XnView window, in the “View” menu, select the “Assign categories...” context menu item, and then select the desired category and apply the settings.

The menu bar contains buttons: “Open”, “Full screen view”, “Rotate counterclockwise”, “Rotate clockwise”, “Lossless JPEG conversion”, “Properties”, “File actions”, “Find”, “Print”, “Scan”, “Convert”, “Capture”, “Slide Show”, “Create Web Page”, “Create Thumbnail Sheet”, “Options”, “About”.

Below the menu bar is a toolbar with tabs, function buttons, and a search field.

XnView Settings

You can enter the XnView program settings from the “Tools” menu by selecting “Options...” in the context menu. Here you can select the display of file types, actions with files, configure keyboard keys and mouse buttons, select reading and writing settings, configure the interface and toolbar buttons, configure the browser, thumbnails, preview, view, full screen mode, program integration into the system, associate files from XnView.

To associate files with XnView, you will need to run the program as an administrator (only to perform this operation).

XnView supports command line operation.

You can connect Adobe Photoshop filters to XnView. In the “Options” window, click on “System Integration” and open the “Adobe Plugins” tab. Click on the “Add…” button, in the Explorer window, select the folder with Photoshop filters (of course, if this program is installed on your computer). After this, Adobe Photoshop filters will work in XnView.

Viewing photos in XnView

To view photos, use the folder tree to open the folder with images. You can add files to the XnView program from the clipboard, or by dragging the mouse (drag’n’drop) into the program window.

Select a preview image. In the preview area, the Preview tab, the photo is displayed in a reduced size. The “Properties”, “Histogram”, “EXIF”, “XMP”, “Categories” tabs contain information about this image.

To enlarge the image, double-click on the photo. Now you can edit the image: resize, adjust colors, remove red-eye, convert to another format, etc.

Using the “Full Screen View” button, the image can be expanded to fill the entire monitor screen. To exit full-screen viewing mode, press the “Esc” key.

Any image from the program window can be selected for use as Desktop wallpaper.

Creating a Slideshow in XnView

To create a slide show, click on the “Slide Show” button on the toolbar. In the Slideshow window, click the Add... button, and then in the Explorer window, select images to add to the slideshow. You can add video files to your slideshow.

Using the “Add Folder...” button, add a folder with all the images located in this folder. Using the “sort” button, sort photos by certain criteria (name, date, size, extension).

Delete unnecessary photos using the “Delete” or “Delete All” buttons. Links to files are removed only from the slideshow list.

Using the triangle buttons, you can adjust the order in which images are displayed. To do this, select the image in the “File List” field, and then use the button to move the photo to the desired location in the file list.

In the “Transition” section, a timer is used (with a choice of time in seconds), or the transition to the next image occurs using any keyboard key or mouse button.

Images are displayed in full screen mode or in a fixed size (user's choice).

By default, “Auto-repeat” is enabled, which means that after the display of photos ends, playback of the images will begin again. When you select the “Random order” setting, the pictures are displayed in a random order, and not in a specific order, according to which the photos are located in the list of files.

Use the Play Sound... setting to add music to your slideshow. To do this, select the appropriate audio file on your computer.

Using the "Advanced Options..." button, make additional settings before starting to create a slide show.

The slideshow can be saved as an executable “.exe” file (will run on any computer), or in video file format. To do this, click on the appropriate buttons (“Create EXE/SCR...” and “Create video”) and make the necessary settings for a file of this type.

Playing video and audio in XnView

XnView displays video and audio files. Go to the folder with the video or audio files and then play the file. The video or music will open for playback in the built-in player. Video playback can be started in full screen mode (similar to images).

With the portable version, I hope it’s clear what to do. So let's look at how to install XnView on your computer. To do this, launch the downloaded application, which is located in the “Downloads” folder on your computer. Then click “OK”, since the Russian language will not be used during installation.

We accept the license agreement by marking the appropriate item and click “Next”.

Then the folder where the program will be installed will be indicated. If you want to choose another one, click “Browse”. Then "Next".

Then you need to select the folder from the Start menu. If it looks like a new one will be created with the name given in the field, click “Next”.

Check to create a desktop shortcut and a quick launch shortcut.

Check all the selected settings again and click “Install”.

If you do not need to run the application immediately, uncheck the box next to “Run” and close the window - click “Finish”.

After launching XnView for the first time, a window will appear "Configuration Wizard". Select your language, set how often you want to check for updates and click OK.

The main program window looks like this: at the top there is a toolbar with the main functions; on the left is a convenient folder tree with which you can find the file you need; the contents of the selected folder will be shown in the middle; and at the bottom there is an area for previewing, displaying properties, EXIF and more.

After double clicking on the photo, it will open in a new tab. This is very convenient if you plan to work with several pictures at the same time. The tabs at the top of the program and the toolbar will change. When you hover the cursor over any picture on the toolbar, a block will appear with a hint about what the selected button is used for.

The Image tab has many options for editing it.

In the program you can apply various filters to a photo.

By applying a filter or changing brightness, contrast, etc., a separate window will open. In it you can change various parameters and see how the image will look after processing. This is quite convenient, since the user does not always know what exactly needs to be changed or added. If you like everything, apply the changes to the image and click OK.

When an image is open, the toolbar will have many useful buttons: crop, rotate, convert to lossless JPEG, change hue and saturation, remove red eye, create a slideshow. There is also a “Save As” button.

By clicking on it, select a location on your computer and one of the available formats. Click "Save" and the photo will be converted to the specified format.

XnView is a worthy competitor to utilities such as IrfanView and FastStone Image Viewer. Works with a large number of formats, weighs little, has a clear interface in Russian, a convenient folder tree and viewing pictures and videos in separate tabs. Window (or tab - you can call it differently) " Reviewer» shows photos from the folder. Which folder exactly is up to you to choose. The folder is selected from the list on the left. You can also simply open “My Computer” and right-click on the folder you are interested in - select the menu item there "Browse with XnView". The same browser will open with the desired folder.

In the Browser, you can perform the same manipulations as with files in “regular” folders opened through My Computer - copying, pasting, deleting, etc.

The program also has a lot of buttons, which indicates a large number of functions. By hovering the mouse arrow over any of the buttons, a tooltip will appear.

When you open a photo, the menu, buttons - everything changes to work with a single photo. In the Explorer, we could, for example, select all the photos and click the “Print” button - then all the selected photos would be sent for printing. In the mode of one open photo, of course, the same button can print only the currently open photo.

Advice: look at what is in the program menu, look at the hints for the action buttons. XnView really has a lot of functions and each of them works as it should - this is a big plus.

What can you do with a photo in XnView - lesson

XnView is great for manipulating either one or hundreds of photos at once. Image enhancement is the most common feature I use for individual photos.

Let's say you took a photo. In my example, this will be a photo of an owl figurine, taken with a very mediocre camera on my Acer Iconia Tab A500 tablet.

What needs to be done? The most obvious: remove noise, make the picture clearer, adjust brightness and enhance colors. XnView allows you to do all this in just a few clicks! And you don't need any Photoshop or similar programs. Everything is done easily and quickly.

Removing noise

If you took pictures with a mobile phone or an ordinary, non-professional camera, there will definitely be noise in the photo. At a small scale, noise is unnoticeable, but when enlarged, it will be noticeable and spoil the appearance of a generally good photograph. In order to have a minimum of noise in the photo, you should take pictures in good lighting with a properly configured camera. If this is not possible, we will remove it programmatically - using XnView.

Let's go to the menu Filter- Effects...- and select the desired effect depending on what kind of noise you have in the photo: if the noise consists of small colored grains, then select a filter Noise reduction- press OK. If the noise is still clearly visible, open this filter again and press again OK. After applying the filter, the picture will become a little blurry, but the noise will become less noticeable. In my case, I encountered a more unpleasant noise, which is more difficult to deal with - I call this noise “brightness”: there are no colored spots, but there are light and dark dots. To fight it, you need to use the filter " Gaussian Blur» with parameters 3x3. This will at least hide the noise a little, eliminating the brown and white dots:

Making the photo bright, with rich colors

Using the “-” button on the keyboard or the corresponding button on the Action Panel, we will change the scale of the photo so that it is completely displayed on the screen. Then press menu Image - Correction - Shading/Highlighting. In the window that opens, use two sliders to make the shadows lighter, revealing previously invisible details, and the bright highlights (highlights) become darker:

Don't try to make the photo bright at this stage, you just want to achieve good uniformity of lighting. You can see an example of such uniformity in the picture above - all the details in the photo are visible, even visiblein the shade.

Then click OK, go to brightness adjustment function: menu Image - Correction - Brightness/Contrast/Gamma/Color Balance. Here you have to empirically find out which parameters are suitable for your photography. I got it like this:

I increased the brightness and contrast - the photo began to look better, but the details in the shadows disappeared again. Then I used Gamma Correction to bring out those details again. Then I made the photo more saturated with colors, setting the values 8, 8, 8 for three colors. This didn’t seem like enough to me, so I set the Red to 12 - this made the photo “warmer”.

Advice: If you increase the parameters of the blue color, cold, blue shades will begin to predominate in the photo. Increase the red color and the photo will become warmer. It all depends on what the photo was originally. We make cold ones warmer, too warm ones - colder.

Sharpening

Click Filter - Effects - Sharpening. Move the Options slider to achieve natural-looking picture clarity. Be careful - a photo that is too sharp will look unnatural.

Save the result in Jpeg

XnView has a feature that puts it head and shoulders above all other graphics programs - it can very high quality save in Jpeg format. This program can compress already compressed images without significant degradation in quality, but the file will be much smaller in size.

A little about Jpeg: The fact is that the Jpeg graphics format, which is used almost everywhere, is a format for lossy image compression. That is, in order to fit the image into a small file size, some information is “thrown out”, in particular color. Here is an example of the Jpeg compression algorithm:

100% differs little from 80%, but 50% is already unpleasant to look at. At 5% my owl turned into Scrooge McDuck :(

If you are interested, I'll tell you more about the Jpeg compression algorithm and I'll return to the description of XnView.

XnView is ideal for creating avatars - it allows you to excellent quality fit the picture into some insignificant tens of kilobytes!

Click File - Save As, select a folder to save, File type: JPG - Jpeg/JFIF. If you used my settings file, which I gave at the beginning of the article, then everything is already configured and you can click Save. If you prefer to configure everything yourself, then click the button Options and make the settings like this:

Now you can save the photo. Feel free to click Save.

this is exactly what was required

Making an avatar

I'll show you an example of creating an avatar. Let me remind you that in XnView it is convenient to make avatars for those sites and services that require a small image (both in pixels and kilobytes). Let's say we need to make an image no more than 64 pixels in height and width, no more than 7 kilobytes in size.

Open the photo and see how to crop:

I highlight the owl’s face because it’s the only one needed for the avatar. Now you need to press Edit - Trim or the keyboard shortcut Shift+X. Result:

Now all we have to do is reduce the avatar to 64 pixels in height and width. Click Image - Resize

Important:

1. To select from the drop-down list Lanczos- it will give the greatest clarity when resizing the photo

2. To have a tick on Maintain proportions

If you need to make a square avatar (as in the example now): Let's see which value in the window is smaller - Width or Height. Instead of a smaller value, we write the required 64. In my picture this is Height- I enter it there and press OK.

If you need to make a rectangular avatar, then everything is done in exactly the same way, only in the “Resize” window enter not 64 (or whatever size avatar you need), but b O greater than the required value. For example, if you need an avatar 50 (width) by 100 (height) pixels, then you need to enter 100 in Height, A Width don't touch. You need an avatar with a width of 100 and a height of 50 - enter 100 in Width, A Height don't touch.

Now our photo is small, 64 pixels high, but still not square - it has become 67 pixels high. The fact is that I made a rectangular selection at the very beginning (it is not always possible to select an exact square), so initially we ended up with a rectangular image. This needs to be fixed. Click Image - Resizing Canvas:

By the word “canvas” in the program we mean literally the canvas: the surface on which the photograph is located. By reducing the canvas size, we will crop the photo. Let's enlarge it and there will be white space around the edges of the photo (the color can be any - you specify it yourself in the Background Color).

Now I can adjust the width in the Resize Canvas window by entering Width number 64.

Note: in the case of a rectangular avatar, here you need to enter a smaller value in the corresponding field, which you did not enter in the previous window. For example, if you want an avatar that is 100 pixels wide and 50 pixels high, then it will be 50 (i.e., the smaller value) in the Height field, and for 50 wide and 100 high, you need to enter 50 in the Width field. That is, exactly the opposite of what was in the previous step.

The result was an avatar of the size we needed, 64 by 64 pixels:

If your avatar seems pale to you, it’s a good idea to sharpen it through the menu Filter - Effects - Sharpening:

After saving, look at the bottom of the XnView window:

If the size is larger than the seven kilobytes we need for the ICQ avatar, then press again File - Save As- just now press Options and in the Jpeg settings we reduce the quality towards the worse. Thus, by reducing quality, we will be able to meet the required size.

Operations on multiple photos

XnView is also great for larger scale activities. The program has a powerful batch processing module.

Open the menu Tools - Batch processing. A window will open:

Everything you need is present here: a list of selected files (if you selected any photos in the Browser before opening this module, they will be here), which can be edited - delete individual lines or even all at once, add individual photos or entire folders. You can also see the Conversions tab, where you can make a list of all the filters that will be applied when converting a bunch of files:

Moreover, in XnView you can bulk add a 3D frame to your photos (that's a bulge around the edges), add a watermark (a joy for those who create web albums) or simply add some kind of inscription.

You can print entire albums

If you select several photographs in the Browser in advance, they can be printed on one or several sheets with a given scale. If desired, you can sign the pages and add a watermark.

The program contains a batch scanning module, a photo tagging system, an IPTC editor, support for Photoshop add-ons, and so on. You can’t even count all the possibilities of the program.

Flaws

Oddly enough, XnView has some drawbacks. I will list the ones I found:

1. Photo filters have few settings and therefore are not as effective as their counterparts in Adobe Photoshop.

2. Adding a watermark does not work very well - in particular, it works unpredictably with the alpha channel (transparency) of the added image.

3. The stack of images is not optimally positioned when printed on one sheet of paper.

4. When processing files in batches, it does not use the capabilities of multi-core processors - it loads only one core.

About the HEIC format

When using XnView (and the vast majority of other photo viewers), you may experience that photos downloaded from your iPhone won't open.

The reason is that Apple phones and tablets shoot photos and videos in HEIF format (with the .heic extension). XnView, unfortunately, cannot open such files, but you can convert HEIC to JPEG using, for example, HEIC to JPG Coverter.

And any photo viewer will open the zhpegi normally.

Conclusion

The program really belongs to the “must have” category - that is, it simply must be installed by those who open photos at least once a day. The program's list of awards is impressive. I've been using XnView for many years and have no plans to change.
