Zvezdny Gorodok (closed military town No. 1 (Shchelkovo-14, Zvezdny village, Moscow region)) is an urban-type settlement (working settlement) (formerly a military town), forming a closed administrative-territorial entity (ZATO), located 25 km northeast of Moscow, surrounded on all sides by the territory of the Shchelkovsky municipal district. Located near the Tsiolkovskaya platform on the Mytishchi - Fryazevo railway.

Story

On January 11, 1960, the Directive of the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force laid the foundation for the creation of the first Cosmonaut Training Center (CTC). Already on May 7, the Commander-in-Chief approved the Regulations on the Air Force Training Center as an independent unit, part of the Air Force for combat training through the head of the Air Force aviation medicine service. The scientific supervision of the work of the Center was carried out by the State Research Testing Institute of Aviation and Space Medicine of the Air Force.

In 1969, the Cosmonaut Training Center was transformed into the Research Testing Center for Cosmonaut Training, and in 1995 the State Research Testing Center for Cosmonaut Training named after Yu. A. Gagarin was created here.

Star City is divided into two parts: a training center and a residential village. In Soviet times, Zvezdny (until the end of the 1960s - Green) town was classified and isolated. It was not listed on maps or signs; entry was only with passes. From Moscow it could be reached from the Shchelkovskaya metro station by bus, which until the late 1980s was not on the official list of routes. Later the bus was assigned number 380.

After the death of L.I. Brezhnev, it did not bear his name for long (it was called Star City named after L.I. Brezhnev).

City district Star City

In 2009, in connection with the transfer of the Cosmonaut Training Center from the Ministry of Defense to Roscosmos, a closed administrative-territorial entity (ZATO) was created on the basis of the town in accordance with Decree of Russian President D. A. Medvedev No. 68 of January 19, 2009. All ZATOs have the status of an urban district and are not part of municipal districts. The boundaries of the urban district of Star City were determined by presidential decree; this territory was removed from the Shchelkovo district and the urban settlement of Shchelkovo.

The area of the urban district is 317.8 hectares, the population is 6,245 people.

Until the formation of the city district’s own authorities, the powers to resolve issues of local importance were exercised by the self-government bodies of the urban settlement of Shchelkovo and the Shchelkovo municipal district.

At the first elections, held on June 28, 2009, Nikolai Nikolaevich Rybkin was elected Head of the city district, and 10 deputies of the local Council were elected. The elected head of the city district was arrested 3 days before the elections on charges of smuggling, but received 82.61% of the votes in the elections. The Basmanny Court of Moscow repeatedly extended his stay in custody, but on August 2, 2010, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation decided to release Nikolai Rybkin from custody. Immediately after his release on August 5, Nikolai Nikolaevich took up the duties of the head of the city district, and on August 19, 2010, the solemn inauguration of the first mayor of Star City took place, during which N. N. Rybkin was presented with a certificate of the head of the city district of Star City of the Moscow region. In February 2012, the criminal case was closed due to the repeal of Article 188 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (smuggling) in December 2011.

On September 8, 2013, Valery Ivanovich Tokarev was elected head of Star City, receiving 67.9% of the votes.

It is unlikely that the name “Closed Military Town No. 1” or “Shchelkovo 14” will evoke any associations among the general public. Another closed facility or military unit near Moscow. But the romantic, but not official name “Star City” absolutely transparently hints to us about flights to distant stars and planets, for which astronauts have been preparing here for many years. But the cosmonaut training center became open to tourists relatively recently, but entry into the territory is possible only as part of an excursion group.

History paragraph

On January 11, 1960, the first Cosmonaut Training Center was created, around which a village soon grew. In 1965, the Training Center was renamed the 1st Cosmonaut Training Center, and in 1968 it received the name of Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin. Over time, it became necessary to combine practical training of astronauts with scientific work and testing of new technologies. In this regard, in 1969, the 1st Cosmonaut Training Center was again transformed into the 1st Scientific Research Testing Center for Cosmonaut Training named after Yu. A. Gagarin. It must be said that even after the fall of the socialist regime, the CPC continued to fulfill its tasks. In 2009, the status of Star City changed, which ceased to be a military unit and became a civilian organization. The main task of the Cosmonaut Training Center today is considered to be preparation for the flight of astronauts and various research work in space. Many CPC simulators are unique equipment that exists only in a single copy.

Excursions to Star City

Star City has a wide range of different tours and excursions. Prices are quite high, especially for tours during which it is offered to fly on a MIG-29, dive into hydro laboratories, and tours to Baikonur are also offered here. All this pleasure is really not cheap. Excursions are the most budget option. However, the excursions are very varied, including regular sightseeing, extended, and thematic ones. Despite the fact that Star City today is not a completely closed secret facility, there is a certain regime here. You can enter the town only with special passes issued to excursionists. You must remember that it is impossible to get to the territory of the CPC without a tour!

The excursion must be booked in advance, having previously agreed on the date and program of the visit and the number of group participants. All issues must be agreed upon at least 5 working days before the date of the visit; under no circumstances should you be late for the excursion; you must be at the entrance to Star City at the exact agreed time, or even better, early.

What to see

On the territory of the CPC there is a unique simulator - the TsF-18 centrifuge - the largest in the world. It is designed to determine how much a person is ready to endure cosmic overloads. Another unique and interesting facility used for training astronauts is the hydrolab. A pool designed to simulate weightless conditions.

The training takes place as follows: an astronaut in a spacesuit is placed in water, and lead weights are hung from his suit. The depth of the pool is 12 meters, which allows exact copies of the ISS modules to be placed directly in the pool.

In one of the halls, designed directly for practicing skills during the flight, there are models of launched vehicles. Through the open hatches, you can easily see their intricate interior in great detail. The stands with samples of what astronauts consume during a flight in outer space do not leave tourists indifferent. Here you can see the famous tubes of food that almost everyone dreamed of as a child. In addition, a set of astronaut equipment is presented, which contains almost everything for any occasion.
